Saint Veronica

Saint Veronica offered her veil to Jesus to wipe his face on his way to Calvary and Christ left his image miraculously imprinted on it. This beautiful act of charity is commemorated at the sixth station of the way of the cross. Veronica’s veil is one of the Vatican’s most treasured relics. St. Peter’s Basilica displays the veil each year on the 5th Sunday of Lent, Passion Sunday.

Saint Benedict

Patronage: Europe, farmers, against poison, against witchcraft

It is related by Saint Gregory the Great (+603) that in the wilderness Benedict fed a raven with some of a portion of his bread. When a jealous and wicked priest tried to kill Benedict with poisoned bread, Benedict coached the raven to take the deadly bread to a place where it couldn't harm another. The raven complied.

“I prayed very hard to Our Lady to tell me what would happen to me. She appeared, holding in her hands two crowns, one white, one red. She asked if I would like to have them—one was for purity, the other for martyrdom. I said, ‘I choose both.’ She smiled and disappeared.”

Saint Thomas the Apostle

Patronage: architects, builders, construction workers, stone masons, against doubt, against blindness, East Indies, India

One of the original 12 apostles, Thomas was ready to die with Jesus in Jerusalem but is best remembered for doubting the Resurrection until allowed to touch Christ's wounds. He preached in Parthia, Persia, and India. He formed many parishes and built many churches over a wide area and was eventually martyred for his faith.
