The Mythology Associated with Lyra & Vega
Lyra, sometimes referred to as Vultur Cadens ("Falling Vulture") or Aquila Cadens ("Falling Eagle"), was known as the lyre of Orpheus in Greek mythology. It was represented as a vulture or eagle carrying a lyre. In traditional Chinese astronomy, Lyra is located within the norther quadrant of the sky, symbolized as the Black Tortoise of the North, the symbol of which is usually depicted as a tortoise with a snake entwined on its back.
Lyra's brightest star Vega is said to be the identity of Zhinü, the goddess of weaving in Chinese mythology.
In Greek mythology, Orpheus managed to tame Cerberus with his lyre.
Orpheus was a legendary musician and poet, who traveled with Jason and the Argonauts in search of the golden fleece. He also traveled to the underworld to recover his lost wife, Eurydice, who was a Nymph (a female, minor nature deity).
Orpheus was killed by the Maenads of Dionysus. Maenads were mad women who were nurses of Dionysus. They wore fox skin (called bassaris), bull helmets or ivy wreaths, and often handled or wore snakes.
Zhinu is also the name of a genus of spiders of the Long-jawed orb weaver variety.
The constellation Draco borders Lyra.
According to Orphism, a religious belief associated with Orpheus, humanity is dual natured, with the body inherited by Titans and a divine spark or soul inherited from Dionysus. In order to achieve salvation from the material existence, one had to be initiated into the Dionysian mysteries and undergo teletē, a ritual purification and reliving of the suffering and death of the god. Those uninitiated, however, would be reincarnated indefinitely.
Both stories of Eurydice and Zhinü are about separated lovers.
The Black Tortoise is depicted with a snake on its back. This imagery comes from a legend that claimed turtles could not mate with turtles, only snakes.
In ancient China the tortoise and the serpent were thought to be spiritual creatures symbolizing longevity.
'Ra' names seem common among star influenced names. The Xern's being the original and most prominent example, and having royal 'R' names. In both similarity and contrast, a couple Lyra names happen to follow the pattern as well but like 'Lyra' end in ra instead of start with it. That being Dora, and the ancestor Laura Cadman, whose first name in general also comes across like 'Lyra'.
