U.S. FDA issues emergency authorization for two new Ebola tests
(Reuters) – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted emergency authorization on Saturday for two new tests made by BioFire Defense that detect Ebola in humans.
FDA said in a news release that it has been working closely with Salt Lake City-based BioFire Defense to obtain the necessary performance data to enable the authorization of the Ebola tests.
“We understand the importance of quickly diagnosing Ebola cases in the U.S. and abroad. FDA is committed to working with companies in the most expedited manner to increase the availability of authorized diagnostic tests for Ebola for emergency use during this epidemic,” the agency said.

Ebola medical worker quarantined in New Jersey tests negative for virus
(Reuters) – A medical worker in New Jersey quarantined after arriving at an airport after treating Ebola victims in West Africa has tested negative for the virus, the state’s health department said on Saturday.
The worker, who has not been identified, was the first to be quarantined under a new policy announced on Friday making this mandatory for anyone arriving at a New York City-area airport after working with Ebola patients in three West African countries.
The worker continues to be under a mandatory 21-day quarantine, the department said in its statement.

Mauritania closes border with Mali over Ebola: officials
Mauritania closes border with Mali over Ebola: officials
(Reuters) – Mauritania has closed its border with Mali after a case of Ebola was confirmed in western Mali near their shared frontier, two Mauritanian officials said on Saturday.
Limame Ould Deddeh, chief medical officer in Kobenni, a town in eastern Mauritania near the Mali frontier, said the government in Nouakchott had sent orders to close all land crossings. A second Mauritanian official confirmed the move.
President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita of Mali had earlier his country would not shut its border with Guinea, even though the Ebola case in Mali was a girl who brought the disease in from Guinea, which has been battling the disease for months.

Adult support of bullied LGB youths tied to fewer suicide attempts
Adult support of bullied LGB youths tied to fewer suicide attempts
(Reuters Health) – Bullied lesbian, gay and bisexual high school students are less likely to fight and attempt suicide when they feel connected to an adult at school, suggests a new study.
Helping these lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) kids develop meaningful connections with adults at school could minimize the negative impacts of cyber and school bullying, researchers say.
“The findings of our study highlight the difference teachers can make in the lives of LGB (and transgender) youth who are victims of bullying,” said Jeffrey Duong, the study’s lead author from the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public health in Baltimore.
Duong co-authored the paper with Catherine Bradshaw, who is an associate dean at the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.
“Simple gestures such as reaching out to sexual minority youth who might have been victimized, and developing meaningful and supportive connections with them, might buffer them from the consequences of bullying,” Duong told Reuters Health in an email.
Duong and Bradshaw examined information from 951 self-identified LGB high school students who completed the New York City Youth Risk Behavioral Survey during the fall of 2009.
Overall, 72 percent said they were not bullied. About 8 percent said they were bullied in school, about 10 percent were bullied online and about 10 percent were being bullied both in school and online.
The researchers report that the kids’ risks for being involved in a fight and attempting suicide tended to increased with the amount they were bullied.
For example, about 72 percent of those who reported being bullied online and in school engaged in a physical fight, compared to about 36 percent of kids who said they were not bullied.
Additionally, about 44 percent of students who reported being bullied both online and in school reported suicide attempts, compared to about 20 percent of kids who weren’t bullied.
The researchers found, however, that students who didn’t feel a connection to an adult were more likely to fight and attempt suicide if they were also bullied, compared to those who weren’t bullied.
In contrast, those who were bullied and felt a connection with an adult at school Read the original here: feeds.reuters

Lantern gets early funding for mental health therapy app
Lantern gets early funding for mental health therapy app
(Reuters) – Lantern, a technology startup that offers online and mobile coaching programs to support mental health, has won early backing for its service.
Executives at the 2-year-old startup said on Friday it has raised .4 million from investors led by Silicon Valley-based venture firm Mayfield, with seed funding from SoftTechVC. Facebook Inc Chief Product Officer Chris Cox is serving as an advisor.
While most patients visit therapists at a physical office, Lantern said its founding team has found that researchers support the concept of online coaching, with occasional check-ins from mental health professionals.
For a month or 0 a year, Lantern’s service tailors programs for each customer based on a profile created by answering online questions such as, “Is your life meaningful and purposeful?” Lantern will connect each customer with a coach.
Lantern’s online and mobile tools teach calming behaviors such as muscle relaxation and deep breathing to help people cope with anxiety, body image issues, stress or even relationships.
Coaches, who take a cut of the monthly fee, will regularly check in via SMS to offer encouragement and feedback.
Internet-based programs to support mental health, while growing in popularity, have only recently gained support from investors. Just a year ago, Lantern Chief Executive Alejandro Foung said, most venture capitalists would not “touch the space.” but now there is a growing interest in these digital services.
To develop the service, Foung said Lantern worked closely with researchers at Stanford University, Washington University in St. Louis and Pennsylvania State University.
The National Institutes of Health recently granted the company million to study how to prevent eating disorders and improve body image on campus. Thirty colleges are participating in this study and are offering students free access to Lantern.
