Horsepower Ratings â What You Actually Need Garage door opener horsepower is one of the most misunderstood specs. Most residential garage doors need either 1/2 HP or 3/4 HP to operate properly. Here's how to think about it: 1/2 HP: Adequate for standard single-car doors and most double doors in good condition with properly tensioned springs. 3/4 HP: Worth the upgrade for two-car doors, heavy insulated doors, or doors that get heavy use. Photo eye sensors: Infrared beams at the base of the door opening that trigger reversal if broken while the door is closing. These are the two small sensors mounted on either side of the door near the floor. If you have an opener old enough that it lacks these features â replace it. What I'd Skip The cheapest chain drive openers from unknown brands â the savings aren't worth the noise and reliability questions. Openers without battery backup â the one time you need it you'll wish you had it. Extended warranty add-ons from big box stores â manufacturer warranties on quality brands are adequate. Installation: DIY or Professional? I'm a DIY enthusiast and I had a professional install mine. The wiring, spring adjustment verification, and alignment work are straightforward if you're mechanically inclined and comfortable with basic electrical work.
