Zhou Yinghua 周莹华 was born into an embroidery family and whose father, Gao Boyu, was one of the founders of the Suzhou Embroidery Research institute and was instrumental in the revival of the hair embroidery technique in the 1970s. Zhou runs the Mingying Embroidery Workshop in Suzhou which creates traditional silk embroidery but also hair embroidery, a tradition that dates to the Tang Dynasty and uses human hair. Zhou uses long, undyed hair from women 20 to 30 years of age. The hair is then processed to eliminate the protein inside and then dyed different colors. Sometimes hair is collected from ethnic minority people who have different hair colors. White hair is also dyed red when a deep scarlet is required. A time-consuming process, the stitching of a mid-sized piece can take around six months to complete.
