Interesting to notice that black women are the ones that recognize Glinda's negative traits for what they are
Exactly! And not just black women, but people of color. Obviously not all, but mainly because to someone who doesnât truly understand racism, the things Glinda says to Elphaba is just poking fun, but to someone who has experienced racism, itâs more than that. Itâs the feeling you get every day when people tell you that you have to act white to fit in, and that your own way and your own culture isnât good enough. Obviously, Iâm not hating on white people, but itâs understandable why some of them canât see it the same way, because they might not know how that feels.
I wanted to add, that this is why I donât like popular as a concept. I love the song, I sing it all the time. But itâs not the cute friendship song itâs made out to be. People say itâs supposed to be Glinda telling Elphaba how to fit in, because she doesnât want her to get made fun of or hurt. But it doesnât look like that. In fact, if youâve ever been in that situation you know how much it hurts to be told things like that. I truly believe that Glinda changed at the end of the song. But the song was hurtful, and if my friends ever told me something like that, I would think about it forever. It might be hard to understand the racist implications of things Glinda says if you donât know what it feels like to have people be subtly racist to you, and itâs as simple as that.
Sorry to be rude, but people are stupid; "Popular" is not a positive song, it's profoundly cynical; "having good ideas is irrelevant what matter is been attractive and popular" is not a positive message
You are not just correct in your reading of "Popular" I think that's the intended meaning; hence why it's immediately undermined by Fiyero being like "You don't have to be like Galinda"
No need to be sorry! đ I get it! Especially when I see other people say that Fiyero telling Elphaba, âYouâve been galindafied, you donât have to do that.â is just because he just wants her to be ânot like other girls.â I really want to know what anyone else would have done if you saw, any person really, start to act like someone else entirely after becoming friends with someone for one day. Galinda and Elphaba had just become friends, and Elphaba was already a completely different person. Itâs not best friends slowly rubbing off on each other, itâs a complete shift. Anyone would tell her that she can just be herself. Itâs not me glorifying Fiyero as some sort of saint. Itâs just what any decent person who witnessed that would say. I know if I started acting like the popular kids in my school to âfit inâ, I would want my friends to talk to me about it.
Ugh that song. No one gets it and it drives me up the wall. Its flashy and pink-washed and catchy as hell, but holy hell the majority donât listen to the lyrics sheâs singing⌠Because they are awful.
âAnd even in your case,âŚ.Though it's the toughest case I've yet to faceâ
âAnd with an assist from me, to be who you'll be Instead of dreary who you were, Well, areâ
âWhen I see depressing creatures, With unprepossessing featuresâ (Now remember Glinda called her the toughest case so basically sheâs the most severely depressing creature)
All of this is hidden between quirky âlarâsâ and âLa Laâsâ while Glinda slides all over the floor and hangs from the ceiling at 6am to distract you from the fact that sheâs being incredibly mean in the most sugary sweet way. Then she puts a flower in her hair, stares at her own reflection WITH Elphaba realizes her green is a complimentary color to her pink and then calls her âbeautifulâ as if they were a set, not because she thinks sheâs truly beautiful as is but because she makes a good accessory. Elphaba leaves and Glinda concludes the song with
âYouâll be popular, Just not quite as popular AS MEEEEEEâ
âŚ.This is the example people refer to when they say that âGlinda didnât need to look at things a different way to find Elphie beautifulâ đ
Oh my God Yes! Folks are like, "she calls her beautiful in this song!" yes, after she called her a depressing creature that needs to be fixed
Also I want to highlight this part, it's more on the general themes of the musical
Celebrated heads of state or Specially great communicators Did they have brains or knowledge? Don't make me laugh! They were popular! Please - It's all about popular! It's not about aptitude It's the way you're viewed So it's very shrewd to be Very very popular Like me!
Again my girl is literally saying all that matters in life is being attractive and charismatic. And she even admits it's cynical (BTW, people acting like Glinda is an ingeneu when she sings shit like this)
God, it's just like Dancing Through Life
People love that Glinda justifies their white privilege, so they ignore the fact that her entire arc is about how she is wrong and changes in the end. If you look at Glinda as the hero from the beginning you can ignore all that pesky growth she experiences and just comfort yourself with the knowledge that being just like Glinda is a good thing! (Nvm the fact that her growth and change is what makes her a good character) đ
