get in loser we’re gonna try again despite it all
More from that one post
Huh. Just realized from finding references that Calvin is pretty consistently left handed. His parents are both right handed, too, so it’s not a question of just making an occasional mistake or anything
Feels like commentary, somehow
Thats really cool! I wonder if one of his parents is also left handed but was taught to use the right hand for school conformity (or is ambidextrous). It Does feel like commentary!
Yeah! Ill want to keep an eye out to make sure, but at least when eating Calvin always uses his left hand. I also know he often complains about stuff like scissors, and often struggles with craft projects as well.
One of Watterson’s strengths was really selling what it was like to be a kid, and that includes all the shitty parts. The way nobody listens, how Calvin has to do so many things he hates just because someone told him to, how often things are just never explained to him, how unfair life is and how there’s nothing he can do about it.
And obviously Calvin is neurodivergent in probably a ton of ways. I think its extremely easy to see the ADHD and the autism, and I know a number of people see him being plural as well, and I think the text can support all of that. Most of that wasn’t intentional, as far as I know—Watterson didnt set out to write a kid with ADHD, he just wrote what he knew and had seen around him.
And he’s left handed, and yet I can’t for the life of me remember a time when that is brought up or addressed, and that does feel intentional to me. As an example of the ways the world just cannot and will not accommodate your differences, being left handed is one of the original and most straightforward poster children.
So I love especially that it was just… snuck in there, without being called out in any specific way. He could have! It would not have been hard to have an arc about Calvin learning that the reason so many things are hard for him is at least in part because none of the tools were made for him.
But I don’t think that was the point. Calvin knows he’s different already. And one of the most universal childhood experiences is knowing that you’re different, but not knowing how. Only that for some intangible, undefined reason, the world isn’t made for you.
Yeah! Such a cool analysis. I wonder if one of Watterson's kids (or one he knew) was lefthanded and he could see the quiet barriers and obstacles set up for them when they couldnt express it themselves.
And maybe he felt if he pointed out any lefthandedness from Calvin, it would distance people from seeing all of him and relating to that. They might instead zero in on the specifics and fail to see his point about acceptance of differences and freedom for kids in general.
I think those fancomics where Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes is transgender are cute and fun but I also think it's a deep misunderstanding of Calvin's character to think he would transition into a heterosexual normie who goes to her high school reunion. That girl would have neopronouns and fang implants
Adult Calvin is a tattoo artist named Panthera who is the bassist in a terrible metal band called Captain Napalm and Hobbes helps do faer E injections
I know it's like 2 weeks too late to change it but I'm so mad I didn't realize that the band would obviously be called "Get Rid Of Slimy GirlS". I walk the road of shame

under US law, it's illegal for anyone who's not a member of a recognised native tribe to own an eagle feather. the penalty is a $100,000 fine.
14 years ago when I had recently moved to Alaska, I went hiking with an Aleut friend, and she pointed to a feather lying on the ground and said "hey that's a bald eagle tail feather, you should grab it!" and I was like "uhh I'm very white and that's very illegal" and she went "they're fuckin everywhere up here man. I have 20." so she grabs it off the ground and hands it to me and says "there, now it's a ceremonial gift from an indigenous person."
and I'm like, okay, cool, I guess this is how we do things in Alaska. nice.
so I keep this bald eagle tail feather around for years. display it in my home among other cherished memorabilia from places I've lived and visited, etc.
on a whim, I have just now looked it up. there is no exemption to that law for a ceremonial gift from an indigenous person. the last 7 years I lived in the US, I was technically a bald eagle poacher.
probably a good thing I don't intend to move back there anytime soon. I wonder what the statute of limitations is on bird crimes.
@freedomisscaryshit I'm fucking dying I think you forgot the word "feathers" in your tags?? or do you just wish you could grab whole ass eagles that land in your yard??
As an Indigenous person, it continues to astound me that there are such strict laws (written by White people) in our name, laws against...picking up things just found on the ground. Like, stop pretending this is "for" us. We don't want this.
so, for clarity, that's not what this is. the law against possessing feathers is an anti-poaching measure, derived from a North American treaty protecting certain migratory bird species from hunting. that treaty has an exemption for indigenous people to allow tribes that use eagle feathers in ceremonial or religious practices to continue doing so.
i used to collect feathers (illegally) as a teenager and the thing is that it's incredibly important for feathers from wild birds to be illegal to possess because it ensures that they never become fashionable to wear. the reason we passed the migratory bird act was because the american and european fashion industry was driving species to extinction in a timespan of years. not just decades. the ecological devastation of exporting birds for hats was absolutely insane and people were watching wetlands and forests and meadows just empty out in realtime. look at the wikipedia article for the plume trade.
the law against 'picking feathers up off the ground' means that you can't go shoot an eagle then sell the feathers on etsy by saying you 'just found them'. you can't own them no matter where they came from, which makes sure that they're not going to come from any birds killed and then secretly disposed of.
these laws, as harsh and ridiculous as they seem, saved flamingos, spoonbills, egrets, and all kinds of hawks and eagles from extinction. the minute these laws weaken and people can make money off killing them again, they're fucked.
this is one of those "no actually this regulation exists for a reason" laws much like work place safety and building fire codes (that Republicans keep trying to roll back) and is written in blood just like them as well. it's just not human blood this time, and the fact that people actually cared enough about long term future over short term profit to get it put in place is nothing short of astonishing. That it didn't get put in place in time to save several species is heart breaking.
The longer it takes for this to come across your dash the funnier it is
Which will fade first? Memories of the Area 51 "raid", or memories of Internet Explorer?
Oh my god....

I would still use my turn signals in the Mad Max Wasteland. They'd call me "Signal" because I'd hit my blinker before ramming the enemy hot rods into the side of a desert ravine. I'd use my turn signal every time. They would respect me for this.
"That is Signal, the Last Follower of the Old Law."
due to relatively popular demand, i extended my seals into a deskmat as well ...

I had the privilege to take some higher level math classes a long time ago when I was in college. And I remember thinking that, at some high level, math seems like philosophy where people are pondering questions just in an effort to understand the world around them, not to to build a bridge or give the change back after selling a candy bar. And then someone told me that the PhD is an acknowledgment that when you go above applied anything, math chemistry physics english spanish art women's studies, you have entered the realm of philosophy. You are pondering, and sometimes answering, existential questions. And it sort of blew my mind.
And this is why universities are still relevant after 900 years or whatever. We know a lot more about the world around us but there are still mysteries of our existence to ponder.
Keep seeing posts about “from oh sweet baby Angel to he calls me daddy too pipeline” about Castiel (S4vs S15 Cas) and it’s always funny to me because it LOOKS that way, sure, but in PRACTICE? It’s the other way around. S4 Cas wouldn’t put up with half the shit S15 Cas did and I think that’s somehting
Dean does something fucked up, S15 Cas will coddle him and tell him it’s okay, S4 Cas will slam him into a wall and call him a pathetic pieces of shit (and Dean would like it)
do it grieving
do it while the ground falls out from under you; do it while everything you loved goes up in smoke; do it while the dream of your future is still burning embers around you; build anew on the hot ashes of everything you worked for; keep going, keep loving, keep living, even as all you want is to turn back (there is no turning back; it is gone already); do it through grief, which feels like fear in the body
do it grieving
The tag I have seen most often on this post is "I needed to hear this," and I am so, so grateful to have said something that was needed. These words came out of the depths of my own grief, and I am so grateful to have made this small connection with others in the midst of it. Grief is isolating and indescribable, but none of us are alone.
That said, these tags were what I needed to hear:
we're all gonna make it
it's okay if you can't see how yet. you don't have to believe in better. for now it is enough to just keep going, and eventually the path will emerge. you are not alone. you are not lost in the woods forever. keep going. I love you.

Gonna be honest a lot of people deep down view cheating as worse than abuse which is why so many people view downright controlling and manipulative behavior in a relationship as 100% permissible so long as that behavior is centered around either preventing or discovering cheating.
jack design that isn’t related to anything at all :]
