extremely funny but also genuinely heartbreaking how surprised maia is every time he recognizes that csevet has friends

like maia has this strange bias when it comes to csevet that makes him think csevet is a lot more like maia himself than he actually is. he assumes csevet is close to his age when he's actually 5-6 years older, he projects his desire for privacy onto csevet when csevet himself is actually pretty chill about being summoned at all hours. he's also maia's social lifeline - every time maia runs into a social roadblock he looks to csevet for guidance, and when csevet isn't there he makes a note to ask him later

so if maia's entire social life revolves around csevet... i wonder if maia sort of subconsciously thinks that csevet's social life similarly revolves around him?

i mean i've been there before - when you're so close to someone that you kind of forget that they have friends other than you. i imagine it would be even worse for maia because he doesn't have any friends so he's latching onto literally the first person who's been kind to him in a decade. he assumes csevet is lonely because he himself is lonely

One thing that certainly wasn't obvious to me the first time I read Goblin but is so fascinating to me is that despite the terrible circumstances he came to the throne under, Maia does not come in with a skills deficit. Maia is underinformed but once he manages to put together the information he needs, he knows what to do with it most of the time.

But to actually do the correct thing he has to he has to be willing to make everyone angry at him, you know, the thing that would have put him at risk of physical harm for the past decade. And frankly, that's a hard thing to do even without all the trauma. It would certainly stress me out!

Like, at this point he still hasn't figured out how to chill out and let himself do things for himself. Even this he sees as figuring out how to do the job of Edrehasivar VII, and that doesn't really help him in the privacy of being Maia. It's really interesting to think though, that he hasn't been able to say no or make other people angry for a decade and this is basically the first time he decides actively to do that. One hopes he'll find the ability to do that as Maia soon, too.
