When Man Dreams of Becoming the Light
Elon Musk shared a video on X filled with stylized images of rockets, Mars, fire, futuristic cities, space travel, destruction, and humanity reaching beyond the earth. The song speaks of broken roads, satellite skies, distant flames, leaving the earth behind, outrunning gravity, and eventually declares: “One day we’ll become the light.”
For Christians, that sentence should immediately make us think about who Scripture says the Light actually is. Jesus said: “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” John 8:12, KJV
Humanity does not become the Light through rockets. We do not become the Light through artificial intelligence. We do not become the Light by colonizing Mars. We do not become the Light through money, technological progress, or escaping the limitations of the earth. Jesus Christ is the Light. There is nothing inherently sinful about building rockets or exploring creation. The problem begins when human achievement becomes a substitute for God, and technological progress begins sounding like a gospel of salvation. That temptation is ancient.
At Babel, mankind said: “Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name.” Genesis 11:4, KJV
They built a city. They reached toward heaven. They wanted to make a name for themselves.
Today the materials are different. Babel used brick and mortar. Modern civilization uses rockets, satellites, computers, artificial intelligence, robotics, and enormous technological systems.
But the spiritual temptation can remain the same:
Look what man can accomplish. Look how high we can climb. Look how far we can travel. Look what we can become. Starbase itself makes the comparison especially striking. It is a city centered around rockets designed to leave the earth and eventually carry humanity toward other worlds. And now a monumental statue of Prometheus, the mythological figure associated with bringing fire to humanity, is being erected there. Prometheus represents an ancient dream: mankind receiving power, knowledge, and fire and using them to advance civilization. But Scripture warns Christians not to confuse human power with divine power. “Cease ye from man, whose breath is in his nostrils: for wherein is he to be accounted of?” Isaiah 2:22, KJV Then Revelation gives us another sobering image. The second beast, later identified with the false prophet, performs great signs:
“And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men.” Revelation 13:13, KJV Some people therefore look at Elon Musk, rockets descending through fire, the Prometheus imagery, Starbase, technological power, and Musk's relationship with political power and wonder whether there is a connection to Revelation 13. Christians should test everything carefully. A rocket producing fire does not by itself prove that Revelation 13:13 has been fulfilled. A Prometheus statue does not automatically identify someone as the false prophet. Scripture must interpret Scripture, and we should not turn interesting symbolism into certainty where God has not given certainty.
But the imagery can still serve as a warning.
Revelation describes a world fascinated by power, signs, images, economic control, political authority, and human glory. And that world ultimately worships the creature instead of the Creator.
Paul describes humanity exchanging: “the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man.” Romans 1:23, KJV That is the deeper danger. Not rockets. Not Mars. Not science. Not technology. Idolatry. When a billionaire becomes a visionary savior figure, beware. When technological advancement begins promising humanity a kind of immortality, beware. When people begin believing mankind can overcome death, transcend creation, escape judgment, or construct its own heaven, remember Babel. Human beings can travel millions of miles and still be separated from God. We can build machines more intelligent than anything previous generations imagined and still need forgiveness.
We can send rockets beyond the earth and still stand before the judgment seat of God. We could occupy Mars and still be sinners in need of a Savior. Jesus asked: “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” Mark 8:36, KJV We might modernize the question without changing its meaning: What shall it profit mankind if we gain another planet and lose our souls? The Gospel is not humanity climbing high enough to reach heaven. The Gospel is that God came down to us. Jesus Christ came into this world. He died for our sins. He was buried. He rose again on the third day. That is our hope. Not Mars. Not Starbase. Not Prometheus. Not artificial intelligence. Not billionaire visionaries. Not political rulers. Not technological immortality. Jesus Christ.
And when a song says, “One day we’ll become the light,” Christians should remember: We are not waiting for humanity to become the Light.
The Light has already come. “In him was life; and the life was the light of men.” John 1:4, KJV
Babel says, “Let us make us a name.” The world says, “Let us reach the stars.” Prometheus says mankind possesses the fire. But the Gospel says: “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name.” Philippians 2:9, KJV There is one name above every billionaire, president, corporation, nation, technological empire, and civilization. Jesus Christ. Explore creation if you want. Build rockets. Study the stars. Develop technology. But do not worship the works of human hands. Do not mistake technological progress for spiritual salvation. Do not believe mankind can build another Babel high enough to escape God. And do not look toward Mars when your redemption comes from Jesus Christ. Humanity will never become the Savior. Humanity will never become God. Humanity will never replace the Light.
Jesus said: “I am the light of the world.” Believe Him. Follow Him. Test the spirits. Read your Bible.
And put your hope in Christ alone.
