When the Church Worships the Empire

Many conservative Christians and MAGA supporters profess to worship God, but their actions reveal devotion to political power and empire worship, the idolization of America. Like the emperor worship confronted in Revelation, this places a nation and its rulers where only God belongs. The book of Revelation was written to churches living under the shadow of the Roman Empire. These believers faced pressure to compromise, honor Caesar, participate in pagan practices, and prove their loyalty to Rome. Jesus spoke directly to His churches because He alone is Lord. Caesar was not lord. Rome was not the kingdom of God. Political power could not offer the crown of life, the tree of life, hidden manna, or entrance into the New Jerusalem. Only Jesus could give those things. That same warning remains relevant whenever Christians place political allegiance beside, or above, their allegiance to Christ.

Christ Can Remove the Lampstand:

Jesus warned the church in Ephesus: “Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.”

A church may possess buildings, money, influence, large crowds, and political connections while losing its true witness. When churches become known more for MAGA politics, nationalism, hostility, fear, and loyalty to political rulers than for the Gospel of Jesus Christ, they are in danger of losing their light.

Jesus did not tell the church to seize political power. He told it to repent. A church that refuses to love its neighbor, care for the poor, welcome the stranger, speak truth, and remain faithful to Christ cannot assume that its lampstand will remain simply because it calls itself Christian.

Christians must decide where their highest loyalty belongs. America cannot give eternal life. A president cannot forgive sins. A political party cannot reconcile us to God. A flag cannot replace the cross. An earthly nation cannot give us the crown of life. Jesus said: “My kingdom is not of this world.” John 18:36, KJV Our citizenship may include an earthly nation, but our highest citizenship is in heaven. Christians may participate in public life, but we must never treat political loyalty as a test of salvation or Christian faithfulness.

Jesus said to the church in Pergamum: “I know thy works, and where thou dwellest, even where Satan’s seat is.” Revelation 2:13, KJV Pergamum possessed an important temple devoted to emperor worship. People were pressured to honor the emperor with religious devotion. Political authority was treated as sacred, and the ruler was elevated beyond his rightful place. That is the danger of empire worship. Empire worship happens whenever people treat a nation as though it were God’s chosen instrument beyond criticism. It happens when a political ruler is spoken of as a savior, deliverer, protector of Christianity, or divinely appointed champion who must be followed regardless of his character and actions.

It happens when people excuse lies, cruelty, pride, corruption, and injustice because they believe political victory matters more than obedience to Christ. Political leaders are human beings. They must never receive the devotion, trust, obedience, or praise that belongs to Jesus alone.

Scripture warns: “Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help.”

Psalm 146:3, KJV

Revelation 2:14 refers to Balaam, who advised Balak in a way that led Israel into compromise and unfaithfulness. The danger was not merely open rejection of God. It was mixture. People claimed to belong to God while participating in the practices of the surrounding pagan culture. That same temptation confronts the church today.

Many professing Christians have mixed the Gospel with conservative politics, American traditions, nationalism, and culture-war hostility. They may still use the name of Jesus, but Christ is no longer at the center. Political power becomes the practical object of faith. This mixture produces another gospel: a message in which salvation is confused with “taking America back,” Christianity is identified with one political party, and outsiders are treated as enemies to defeat rather than neighbors who need love and the Gospel.

Paul warned: “But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.” Galatians 1:8, KJV

The Gospel is not conservative politics. The Gospel is not MAGA. The Gospel is not American nationalism. The Gospel is that Jesus Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again on the third day according to the Scriptures.

Revelation 2:17 promises hidden manna, a white stone, and a new name to the one who overcomes.

Earthly empires promise security, prosperity, identity, and belonging. They tell people, “Your nation will save you. Your ruler will protect you. Your political tribe will give you purpose.”

But Jesus offers what the world cannot provide.

He is the true Bread from heaven. He gives eternal life. He gives His people a new identity.

He writes a new name upon those who belong to Him. Political movements feed people fear, anger, resentment, and pride. Christ feeds His people with truth, grace, mercy, and eternal life.

Jesus said: “I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger.” John 6:35, KJV We do not need an empire to give us identity. We belong to Jesus Christ.

The Seduction of Jezebel:

The church in Thyatira was also warned about “Jezebel,” a symbolic name connected with seduction, idolatry, and compromise.

False teaching often seduces rather than commands. It makes compromise appear righteous. It persuades believers that ungodly methods are acceptable because the political goal is supposedly good.

It says: “We must overlook this leader’s character because he will give us power.” “We must excuse cruelty because our nation is under threat.”

“We must spread fear because the other side is evil.” “We must treat outsiders as enemies because we are defending Christian civilization.”

But Jesus never authorized His church to commit evil so that political good might result.

The methods of the kingdom must reflect the character of the King. Jesus taught us to love our enemies, bless those who curse us, care for the least of these, welcome strangers, seek justice, show mercy, and proclaim repentance and forgiveness of sins to all nations.

A Call to Repentance:

The message to the churches of Revelation is not merely condemnation. It is a call to repent. Christ calls churches to return to their first love. He calls believers to renounce idolatry. He calls Christians to stop placing political rulers where only Jesus belongs. He calls His people to reject empire worship, nationalism, cruelty, pride, deception, and another gospel. Our hope is not in America.

Our hope is not in MAGA. Our hope is not in conservative political power. Our hope is Jesus Christ. America is an earthly nation and will not last forever. Every empire rises and falls. Every earthly ruler eventually leaves office and dies. But the kingdom of Jesus Christ will never be destroyed. “The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.”

The Tanakh Prepares the Way; the New Testament Reveals the Messiah

The Tanakh, the Torah, the Prophets, and the Writings, prepares the way for Jesus Christ. From Genesis to Malachi, God unfolds His plan of redemption. The New Testament does not introduce a different God or an unrelated message. It reveals that the promises, patterns, sacrifices, and prophecies of the Hebrew Scriptures find their fulfillment in Jesus the Messiah.

In Genesis, God promises that the offspring of the woman will crush the serpent’s head. In Exodus, the blood of the Passover lamb delivers God’s people from judgment. In Leviticus, sacrifices reveal that sin requires atonement. In the Psalms, we see the righteous sufferer, the rejected stone, and God’s anointed King. The prophets speak of a virgin conceiving, a ruler coming from Bethlehem, a suffering servant bearing our sins, and the Son of Man receiving an everlasting kingdom.

These Scriptures were preparing the world for Christ.

Jesus said:

“Search the scriptures… they are they which testify of me.”

John 5:39, KJV

After His resurrection, Jesus began with Moses and all the prophets and explained the things written concerning Himself. The disciples did not invent a new story. Their eyes were opened to see that the story had always been pointing toward Christ.

Jesus is the true Passover Lamb. He is the promised offspring who defeats the serpent. He is the suffering servant who was wounded for our transgressions. He is the rejected stone who became the cornerstone. He is the Son of Man whose kingdom will never pass away.

The Gospel is the fulfillment of God’s promise: Jesus Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again on the third day according to the Scriptures. The cross was not an accident, and the resurrection was not an afterthought. God had announced His saving purpose beforehand.

Not every verse is a direct prophecy about Jesus, but the whole biblical story moves toward Him. The Law reveals our need for righteousness. The sacrifices reveal our need for atonement. The prophets announce redemption. The Writings express hope for God’s promised King.
