I think it could be easily argued that he's canonically autistic but I haven't finished the anime/manga yet & can't say with 100% certainty.

But Tani:

- Is blunt, states his opinions clearly, doesn't tell white lies. He's more likely to omit things than to lie. Though he will be like "I'm fine", "it's nothing" if he's embarrassed or so. He also doesn't read between the lines and it takes him time to realize when others are implying something. This combo often catches people off-guard.

Monologue from him: "Up until now, I went through life taking things people said to me literally, completely missing everything under the surface. It didn't matter to me if my intentions were conveyed properly through my words*. I never gave it a second thought. Expressing my thoughts verbally and understanding others hoping to do the same is difficult to figure out. I can't help but worry that there's still a lot I'm missing."

*As in word choices where "You can go, there isn't much for you to do in the library" SOUNDS like he's trying to convince someone to leave the library when that's not how he meant to come across.

- Has some extent of flat effect; Monotone, no obvious expressions most of the time, especially in contrast to his peers.

- After going to the cinema, he recalled the names of characters and locations in the movie perfectly, but the metaphors and abstract/emotional stuff went over his head. His girlfriend points out these little details and the meaning of them, and he goes "oh, so that's what those meant", implying he noticed the details but didn't connect them to the whole emotional picture. An example of a different thought process and memory.

- Wears the same things often. While his girlfriend dresses up for their dates, he shows up in something that looks exactly like his school uniform. Not because he doesn't care enough to dress up but because it's his default (he probably would dress "nicer" if it was asked of him). It's also pointed out that he looks exactly like he did in middle school, save for a new pair of glasses.

- He works at the school library which is a nice job for autists. The room is quiet most of the time, he probably gets to deal with systems, data, sorting media, research.

Alot of the reasonings could be chalked up to being an alien but i still think so.

- Misses social cues every now and then. Alongside this, there are times where he forgets when to end a conversation,getting lost in his own thoughts and infodumping about whatever situation is currently happening.

- At one point, he was confronted about this, to which he replied with "Isn't that allways the case, a genius getting rushed?" , meaning that whenever he's unintentionally dragging a conversation, he dislikes the idea of being interrupted during an infodump and/or feels the need to give as much information about a situation as possible otherwise things will go wrong.

- Has an emotional attachment to the people he trusts most, has trouble regulating his emotions when someone goes away, even if it's temporary + hand movements become more frequent.

- Has a tendency to snap at people when he's stressed, showing signs of overstimulation with his mannerisms. His posture also seems to somewhat change, sitting+standing in a slightly hunched position.

- Often seen with a worried look on his face when dealing with a negative situation, reguardless of how small or big it is. Sometimes, he can also be seen pulling the facial expression when nothing's going on. This implies that he has some sort of paranoia. Many autistic people with anxiety disorders have a hard time with keeping their guard down, so this could be what he's going through.

- Mimics Stoat Muldoon's voice in the show at least 2-3 times(iirc), another possible vocal stim, except with this one he most likely uses it for the sake of comfort. He has heated rivalry with Muldoon, and Muldoon's anti-alien insults often feeds into his insecurities and overwhelms him.

- There are recurring implications that he couldn't cope with living on his home planet+ life outside of earth. For example, in the episode "Better off without us" , he B-Bop and Do Wah had to leave earth to keep Mike,Angela and Cedric safe because it was too dangerous for them to keep dealing with the villains. Shortly after arriving on Bog's ship, he is shown to immediately regret leaving earth, the tasks he is given as punishment for giving up on the invasion possibly reminding him of what his life was like before he discovered earth and began living on it.

Many autistic people have bad experiences with their home country/town/places within the area in general, and often respond with immediate distress or frustration if they have to go to that place again ,even when temporary.

Not good with relationships. At start of S1 he and his wife divorce and by end of S3 he and Rebecca still never got together even though there was chemistry.

He won't allow himself to express negative emotions. That's what causes his panic attacks, and it also damages his relationships with other people. Michelle divorced him because relentless positivity left her feeling isolated and sort of resentful.

Doesn't have any boundaries when it comes to people. Daily makes Rebecca food every morning even though she asks him to stop. Can go on story tangents and needs to be told to stop otherwise could go on for hours.

Feels so guilty about sleeping with Rebecca's friend that he goes non-verbal for five hours on the coach home.

Sensory sensitivities - especially when it comes to food/drink - thinks tea tastes like brown water. Also has issues with the sound of whistles.

Willing to blow his head off with a spicy curry he's never had before just to please the owners.

He has strong sense of ethics and doesn't try to appease anyone to save face; he'll just leave if he doesn't like something. He takes things at face value and can have a hard time gauging people's true intentions. His sword basically serves as his comfort object and he's very serious about its maintenance. In one installment he shows up having just watched a yakuza movie and spends the rest of his appearance speaking only in quotes from it...
