Dark Matter: The Invisible Rules of the Universe
Imagine looking up at the night sky and realising that everything you can see — every star, planet, and galaxy — makes up less than 5% of the universe.
The rest? It’s invisible. About 27 percent of the universe is made of an unseen substance known as dark matter, with the rest thought to be dark energy (which I’ll explore in a future post). Without it, galaxies would fly apart, cosmic structures would collapse, and the universe wouldn’t exist as we know it.
Dark matter is essentially the cosmic glue holding the universe together. Understanding how it’s distributed could help us answer some of the biggest questions in astrophysics: how the universe is organised, how it evolved, and what its ultimate fate might be.
In this post, we’ll explore what scientists know (and don’t know) about dark matter, including how it was discovered, the ways we detect its presence, and the leading theories about what it might actually be.
The Discovery
The idea of dark matter dates back to 1933, when swiss astronomer Fritz Zwicky studied a cluster of galaxies known as the Coma Cluster. He noticed that the galaxies were moving too quickly to be held together by the gravity of their visible matter alone.
Zwicky proposed the existence of an invisible substance that provided the extra gravity needed to keep the cluster intact. He called it “dunkle Materie”, or dark matter.
At the time, his idea was considered radical. It wasn’t until the 1970s that the theory gained serious traction, thanks to American astronomer Vera Rubin, who studied the rotation curves of spiral galaxies. She discovered that stars on the outer edges of galaxies were moving far faster than expected. Without some unseen mass providing extra gravity, those stars should have been flung into intergalactic space.
Then, in 2006, one of the strongest pieces of evidence yet came in the form of the Bullet Cluster, a galaxy cluster created when two large galaxy clusters collided about 3.8 billion light-years away from Earth. Hot gas from the collision, detected in pink via X-ray imaging, showed where most of the normal matter ended up. However, gravitational lensing revealed taht the majority of the mass, shown in blue, was located elsewhere, indicating the presence of dark matter.
The Evidence
1. Galaxy Rotation Curves
The speed at which stars at the edges of galaxies move depends on the force of gravitational attraction that it feels towards the centre of the galaxy. Therefore, the higher the mass of the galaxy, the faster the stars at the edges of galaxies orbit the centre.
However, based on the amount of mass we can see, galaxies should be rotating a lot slower than they actually are. This suggests there is actually a lot more matter out there than meets the eye.
2. Gravitational Lensing
According to Einstein’s theory of general relativity, massive objects bend the path of light. When light from distant galaxies travels passes near invisible clumps of dark matter, it gets warped in a phenomenon known as gravitational lensing.
By studying this distortion of light in galaxy clusters, astronomers have been able to map the hidden dark matter in galaxy clusters and across the cosmos.
3. Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation (CMB)
The CMB is the faint glow left over from the Big Bang. It contains tiny temperature fluctuations that reveal how matter was distributed in the early universe. These patterns would only make sense if dark matter was present at the time. Using the CMB, astronomers estimate that dark amtter makes up about 27% of the universe’s total contents.
What is Dark Matter Made Of?
In truth, scientists don’t actually know what dark matter is made of. But we do have lots of theories about it:
1. WIMPS (Weakly Interacting Massive Particles)
WIMPs are a leading candidate: heavy, slow-moving particles that interact via the gravitational and possibly the weak nuclear force, but not with light or electromagnetism, making them invisible.
When two WIMPs collide, they might annihilate each other, producing gamma rays. Experiments like NASA’s Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope are searching for these signatures, so far, without success.
2. Axions
Axions are ultra-light particles that could behave like a cold, invisible fluid permeating space. First proposed in 1977 to solve the strong CP problem in particle physics, axions remain one of the most intriguing possibilities.
If they exist, they could explain both the symmetry-breaking in particle physics and dark matter’s gravitational effects.
3. Sterile Neutrinos
Neutrinos are ghostly, nearly massless particles that rarely interact with matter. Sterile neutrinos would be even more elusive, interacting only through gravity. If they exist, they could account for at least some fraction of dark matter.
4. Primordial Black Holes
Some scientists propose that dark matter could consist of tiny black holes formed in the first seconds after the Big Bang. These primordial black holes could range from the size of an atom to 100,000 times more massive than the Sun.
A theory proposed by physicist Stephen Hawking is that some of these black holes may have formed, collapsed, and spread throughout the universe, mimicking the gravitational effects we attribute to dark matter.
5. New Candidates for Theories
Dark matter is one of the main topics of investigation in astronomy at the moment, and new, more exotic theories are being continually developed. Here are some examples:
Fuzzy Dark Matter - ultra-light particles with wave-like properties that could explain galaxy formation better than WIMPs.
Dark Photons - hypothetical particles that could interact in a hidden “dark sector” of physics
Composite Dark Matter - the possibility that dark matter could form bound states like “dark atoms” rather than existing as individual particles.
Could Dark Matter Be Wrong?
Of course, there’s always the possibility that dark matter doesn’t exist at all. Our laws of gravity themselves (Newton’s laws and general relativity) may not work at a large scale, such as galaxies and the universe itself.
One alternative is MOND (Modified Newtonian Dynamics), which adjusts how gravity behaves at very low accelerations, such as those at the edges of galaxies. While MOND and similar theories can explain galaxy rotation curves, they fail to explain other evidence, such as the CMB patterns and the Bullet Cluster.
For this reason, the overwhelming majority of scientists believe that dark matter is real, but the hunt of direct proof is still ongoing.
The Cosmic Mystery Continues
Dark matter remains one of the biggest unsolved puzzles in physics. We can see its effects everywhere, from galaxy formation to gravitational lensing, but we still don’t know what it is.
With new experiments like the LUX-ZEPLIN detector, the Euclid mission, and NASA’s upcoming Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, we may be closer than ever to uncovering the truth.

Introduction: Mapungubwe – The Forgotten African Power
The Kingdom of Mapungubwe (c. 1075–1300 CE) was one of the earliest known states in Southern Africa, preceding Great Zimbabwe and laying the foundation for later powerful African empires. Located in modern-day South Africa, Botswana, and Zimbabwe, Mapungubwe was a centre of trade, wealth, governance, and advanced social organization.
Despite its historical significance, Eurocentric narratives often ignore or downplay Mapungubwe’s role in African civilization, falsely portraying Africa as “uncivilized” before European contact. From a Garveyite perspective, studying Mapungubwe is essential because it represents:
Black economic success – Mapungubwe controlled Southern Africa’s early gold trade.
Black architectural and governance excellence – It had organized cities and a structured ruling system.
Black global influence – Mapungubwe’s trade networks extended to the Middle East, India, and China.
By understanding the Kingdom of Mapungubwe, Black people today can reclaim their lost history, reject colonial distortions, and recognize Africa’s early global impact.
1. The Origins and Rise of the Kingdom of Mapungubwe
A. Geographic and Strategic Importance
Mapungubwe was located at the confluence of the Limpopo and Shashe Rivers, making it a key trade hub in Southern Africa.
The region had fertile land for agriculture, abundant cattle, and access to gold, making it economically prosperous.
The kingdom’s rulers established a socially stratified society, separating elite rulers from commoners—a system that later influenced Great Zimbabwe.
Example: The Mapungubwe Hill, a sacred royal centre, symbolized the kingdom’s centralized leadership and class-based society.
Key Takeaway: African civilizations were highly structured, organized, and rich in resources long before European contact.
2. The Economic and Trade Power of Mapungubwe
A. Gold, Ivory, and the Rise of African Trade
Mapungubwe was one of the earliest African states to exploit gold mining, exporting gold to Swahili coastal cities, the Middle East, and Asia.
The kingdom also traded in ivory, copper, animal hides, and ceramics, making it a key supplier in the early African economy.
Gold from Mapungubwe was transported to Kilwa, Sofala, and other major Swahili trading cities, where it was exchanged for glass beads, Chinese porcelain, and luxury goods.
Example: Archaeological excavations have uncovered Chinese porcelain, Indian glass beads, and Arabian goods, proving that Mapungubwe was linked to the global economy centuries before European exploration.

Pan-African unity is necessary—African nations must work together, just as Mapungubwe influenced later African states.
African history must be decolonized, ensuring that the legacy of Mapungubwe is properly taught worldwide.
Final Thought: Will We Reclaim Mapungubwe’s Legacy?

Will Black people allow our history to remain hidden, or demand its full recognition?
Will we continue to depend on foreign economies, or reclaim Africa’s economic power?
Will we build new African empires, or allow our civilization’s achievements to be forgotten?
