After coming out as transgender to her parents, Mickie was sent to live with her Aunt Paula in the summer of 1986. She completed her senior year at Hawkins High School in the graduating class of 1987 at 19 years old. She works at a local used bookstore called Second Chance Books and helps her Aunt with her thriving Avon cult business.
Very kind, empathetic, and generally friendly.
She prefers to blend in rather than stand out and tries to cause as little trouble as possible.
She is practical when faced with dangerous situations and resists impulsive decisions that may put her or people she cares about in harms way.
She is closed off to most people but is good at hiding it. She has mastered the art of redirecting conversations away from herself.
She loses things often and has a habit of placing things in unusual places, thinking she will remember easier that way but it always results in her searching for nearly an hour for whatever the item was.
Sewing, mending clothing, embroidery, tailoring, etc. (She will go on to be the costume designer and tailor for all of Hawkins Schools theater productions and run a personal tailoring business out of her home.)

Jeanne Church (Barton): Mickie’s mother. They got along well enough before Mickie came out, now the relationship has become strained. She is the one who suggested sending her to live with her sister, Paula Barton, in Hawkins. Whether this was to protect Mickie from her father or save face is unknown.
Dan Church: Mickie’s father. He was always disappointed the Mickie seemed to avoid typical father-son bonding activities. Mickie’s transition marked that relationship as never happening. He struggles with this, and takes it out on her until the day she moves out. (Many years later, they will reconcile. It will take time, but he will make an effort to unlearn his hatred and confusion and attempt to make up for it.)
Paula Barton: Mickie’s maternal aunt. She moves in with her in the summer of 1986. Paula is THE Avon representative of Hawkins. She runs it like the military. She is simply too caught up in her own “empire” to care in the slightest about Mickie’s transition, in fact hopes to shape Mickie into her replacement someday. Deep down, she cares about Mickie and acts as a surrogate mother.
Steve Harrington: Steve pursues Mickie romantically despite her attempts to keep him at arm’s length. She is attracted to him, but reasonably terrified of the repercussions. Eventually, she reveals to him that she is trans. He fully does not care. He is absolutely smitten with her, and while hesitant at first, she is equally as enamored.
Robin Buckley: Mickie and Robin become fast friends. They graduated the same class at Hawkins High, but only officially met some time after. Mickie isn’t annoyed by Robin’s talking and finds her funny (much to Steve’s dismay).
Nancy Wheeler: They are mostly neutral to one another. Mickie admires her passion and Nancy is happy Steve found someone good for him
Dustin Henderson: Mickie thinks Steve and his friendship is very sweet. Dustin is happy Steve is happy, and he thinks Mickie is nice. (Someday, their home is always open to him. He is always polite and Mickie always sends him home with more food than he will ever eat.)

In 1988 Mickie meets Steve, they hit it off and become friends. Steve pursues her romantically, but she rebuffs him despite their very palpable chemistry. Mickie allows herself to get close, but pulls away suddenly each time, much to Steve’s frustration. Mickie tries to scare him away by revealing that she is trans, but he doesn’t care. They start dating.
In 1989, Steve begins his job at the Hawkins School district as a baseball coach and a teacher. He gets Mickie involved in the theater department as a seamstress, at first a volunteer position but becomes paid when the elderly woman doing it before her passes away.
In 1990, Mickie and Steve move into their own home in Hawkins. They cannot get married, but they wear rings and act as a married couple. Mickie begins doing tailoring out of their home and becomes to go-to person for mending around town.
In 1991, they begin saving for a surrogate to start a family.
In 1993 they manage to save enough, first child is born in 1994.
1997 they save up enough again for their second child.
2000 they decide to look into adoption.
2002 they adopt three siblings.
2007 they adopt their last child.
