the real problem with Princess The Hopeful is that arguably Mage the Awakening already supports playing magical girls

joking because this obviously isn't the intent and is also missing the whole "publicly visible hero" element that Princess does actually bring in

but like. i mean. both pulling on your secret wizard identity and a group theme for spellcasting are things you can build toward

so like. i mean. the option is there, and can provide actual mechanical effects

like you can't go around fighting monsters or saving people in the street without Problems, but you can announce yourself as a magical girl group to other mages or in a ritual and have it work to your benefit. there's nothing stopping you.

in Ascension on the other hand, afaik there's no way to get mechanical benefit from group theming, but just having a matching aesthetic while knowing that under the hood one of them considers this an elaborate hermetic ritual they've incorporated into your life to draw on for power, another will gladly explain the etheric technology subtly incorporated into their tools and clothing, and still another considers this an altered state of consciousness to more easily let go of their sense of self and alter the world

well, it's kind of its own reward, i think...?

I think the funniest thing Toby Fox could do is not have Papyrus show up in Deltarune at all and then in the post credits after you you beat the game you'd see a message appear that says "you can now play with Papyrus" and then he'd be retroactively inserted into every single chapter like some kind of new game+

also I don't think parents "these days" are uniquely terrible, I just think neglect is showing up in new ways as technology progresses. today's ipad kid would've been wandering around in a ditch alone all day and night before. parents not wanting to have to deal with children is not a new phenomenon.
