Victoria, B.C.
Last week, I adventured to Victoria, British Columbia.Â
The truth was, I was tired, and not really planning on traveling anywhere last week. I was all set to chill, maybe watch a movie, discover a cool new restaurant in town, you know, keep it a low key break. The past six weeks had been full of trips, and volunteering at a summer camp, and other excitement. I was so ready for my break!
But then, all week I sat at work watching the planes take off and land from the wall of windows. I wondered where each one was going and found myself dreaming of all the fantastic places I could go! My fingers drummed against the desk as i waited on a particularly slow day for the calls to roll in. Before I knew it, i was online looking to see what destination had plenty of tickets left for my first day off in a while.Â
Then I saw it. A relatively short hop, skip and jump and I could land in beautiful British Columbia! Total travel time even with a layover? A little over two hours! Perfect for a day trip! So, I texted a friend, and we were off on our international adventure!Â
The next morning, we met up at the Portland International Airport, passports in hand and ready to travel. Our 0600 flight to Seattle would connect us up to Canada! Our connection time was a bit short, but that was alright, I knew the Seattle-Tacoma International airport like the back of my hand, i wasn’t worried.Â
We made it with a few minutes to spare, filled out the customs paperwork, and eagerly awaited our seat assignments. I fly quite a bit domestically, but there is just something so exciting about traveling with a passport. Mine holds far to little stamps. I hope someday soon to be able to travel to Europe.Â
We boarded and took our seats, for our short flight to Canada. As we landed, I watched as the little Verizon symbol in the top left of my phone turned to Tellus, and we deplaned to customs.Â
I felt my face grow hot. I was nervous. Why was I nervous? I had no reason to be. The realization suddenly hit me that this was my first time traveling internationally by myself. Every other time had been on a family vacation. The customs agent waved me over, i was next in line.
He looked over my paperwork, staring at my passport, then my face and passport again.
“Just one day?” He questioned me.
“ Uh yeah,” I answer feeling my face grow hot once more “ I, uh work for the airline so the flights are cheap” I try and joke. He stares at me once more. Why am I so nervous?! I am literally the most boring person in the world. Â
I feel his laser stare boring through me.
“ Ok, welcome to British Columbia” he tells me finally as he hands back my passport.Â
“ Thank you!” I breathe, and walk down the hall into the airport, not wanting to linger.Â
A few moments later, my friend appears from the gateway hall.Â
“You left me!” she teased, and I laughed.
“ Sorry!!! I didn’t want to linger at customs and look weird to the dudes at the counter!” I told her, as I set my backpack on a bench and ritually shuffled through it, ensuring I hadn’t left anything on the plane. I pulled out my credit card and drivers license to keep them handy as I put away my passport for safe keeping.Â
And so with that, we headed to an airport shuttle that would take us into town.Â
After arriving in town, we bought a quick breakfast, since neither of us really had a chance to eat during our early travel. As we walked around the waterfront after breakfast soaking up the sun, and gorgeous natural beauty I had a brilliant Idea. The ferry to Seattle!Â
It was a fantastic Idea!!! If we flew back, we only had a couple of hours until we had to turn around and comeback to the airport. But, if we took the ferry that departed from waterfront we could stay much later!
I bounced the idea off my friend. Enthusiastically she agreed. she had never been on a boat of that nature before and was excited to try a new experience. So I contacted the ferry company. Sure enough, they still had space!Â
We spent the rest of the day at the Royal British Museum. They currently have an excellent Ancient Egypt exhibit, as well as their British Columbia Natural History, and general history exhibits. To be honest, we could have spent hours there. Next time we will return!Â
We ate lunch at the Sticky Wicket pub. The salmon I had was delicious, and Elizabeth’s fish and chips looked amazing as well! Then headed out to do some shopping before walking down to the boat.Â
The boat is where the adventure really begins.Â
We get through customs, and they make the announcment that due to weather causing a delay in the boats departure from Seattle, we would have an hour delay. A few people at that moment got up from their seats in the waiting area and try to leave. Since we all had been processed through customs, we could not leave. Which was alright. I didn’t mind. It just made the trip more interesting.Â
As I have begun to travel more, I have realized that there are too many variables to worry. What will happen will happen, you just have to have plans for going forward with the results of the outcome.Â
We were going to have a very close connection before the delay. We were going to have just under two hours to travel from the terminal on the Seattle waterfront, to Seatac airport, and to the gate. A bit stressful, but certainly doable. Now, we would have about 40 minutes.Â
I steeled myself for the inevitable new experience. A night sleeping in an airport. When we finally made it onto the boat and departed, the boat trip itself was fantastic and fun. We had a table with six seats all to ourselves. much more space to spread out than on a plane!Â
We managed to be one of the first of the boat, and snagged a taxi.
Our driver sped through town, closing the gap between us and the next leg of our journey in record speed. After paying him a handsome tip for his superhuman speed, we raced through the airport. Through security, to the subway to take us to the annexed wing and our gate we flew as fast as we could.Â
As we ran to the gate agent, we realized the doors were shut. By less than a minute, we had missed our oppertunity. The flight was closed. We would indeed be spending the night in the airport.Â
It was 2315, the next flight was at 0630. A full seven hours and 15 minutes separated us from our next chance to return home. I looked up local motels on my phone. Two expensive, full, or too sketchy. Besides, by the time I made the booking, we found or way over the hotel, and then left to come back in the morning, it would not really be worth the time and money. So, we slept in the airport.
We decided to stay where we were at in the North annexed terminal. It was quiet, there were plenty of open seats, and it felt more secure. we found a couple rows of benches that faced each other. This way, we could each keep an eye on each other’s stuff. I pulled out my jacket for warmth, and used my back pack as a pillow. She did the same. Then I tried to sleep. I doubt I slept more than 20 minutes at a time.Â
Every noise woke me up, and the loudspeakers played a recorded message about unattended baggage on repeat every few minutes.Â
The next morning, as we groggily made our may over to the main terminal for our next flight, I had time to do a bit of reflection.
Each time I travel, I like to recount a new skill that I have learned. Eventually I hope to travel around the world with only a backpack. So I practice my travel skills frequently. That day I learned how to spend the night in the airport. There are a few things that I wish I would have had. So with that in mind, here is what I will do from now on!
As I tend to frequently fly standby, and I try my luck at squeezing my way on to tighter flights in crazier places, I will adjust the contents of my travel pack to suit a possible airport overnight.
~ I am on the hunt for a good compact travel blanket.Â
~ I will always bring a few travel toiletries no matter what even on day trips, including a toothbrush and toothpaste, deodorant, and possibly even Cetaphil facial cleanser wipes which can help to make one feel way better after sleeping on a bench.
~ I will also ensure I always have at least a hoody and possibly a change of clothes.Â
~ I will make sure I have a snack like a cliff bar or something, and water.
I am glad that I had the oppertunity to earn some new travel skills to grow my experience as a savvy traveller!Â
