The tarot isn’t something to be messed about with, many people have quoted on this and they cannot all be talking a load of nonsense. However I don’t see the damage in doing practice spreads, although when you do, do this you will usually find that the cards that come out do relate to something happening in your life at the moment.

Although it’s important to memorize the spread layouts, I find the best way to practice reading the cards is to choose 3-4 to start with. Then just lay them out in a line then try reading them, this doesn’t have to be in any particular order just string them together and see what you come up with. This will definitely help you when you come to doing proper readings.
