Just a wildass theory/idea I thought of.

(OOC and has no ground to stand on.) Caroline and her family joined Aperture as this "big opportunity" in life.

She probably got hired as the CEO's assistant via a family member who already worked in Aperture. Y'know, spread a good word about her. Like that, she could bring in more family members to get them a "better job position" in life. Caroline honestly thought they were changing the world. And she wanted her family to be a part of it, too. (At this point she didn't realise how unethical Aperture was.) Of course, considering how greedy Apeture (Cave) was, they accepted more people.

Once things got bad, they pretty much couldn't leave, and the company basically owned them. After the decline of volunteers, some scientists and employees (potentially Caroline's family) were forced in as test subjects. Probably unknowingly as well, even if the results were lethal.

Even if they survived the testing, the awakening of GLaDOS probably had them killed.

And the rest died in her testing chambers.

GLaDOS killed them all.
