Hello, I’m dilettantefeminist or DF for short (she/her). I’m a writer (mainly of romantic comedy starring Tolkien elves) and a reader of all sorts of things. My AO3 is here.
Things I write about: Elrond (especially celrond), Círdan, my modern au, and OCs. Most of my work is explicit, but occasionally I write a nice little story in canon that is not.
Things that make me happy: brainstorming plot, reblogging writers’ work I enjoy, beta reading (including and ESPECIALLY explicit things), and of course writing. Like all writers, I would be thrilled if you wanted to tell me you liked something I wrote IN ANY WAY (kudos, comments, DMs, ask box...).
I’m an elf person but not a silm writer, I’m a book person but not a lore master. I’m an explicit writer but I usually feel the need to have a lot of plot thrown in there. I occupy a weird little corner of LOTR fandom, and I am lucky to have been adopted by a few very nice mutuals. Trying to impress them keeps me motivated.
I don’t ever have as much time to write as I’d like because of the stage of life I’m in (intense job, married, kid, elderly parent), but I enjoy connecting here. If I seem overly sincere it’s because I am old and genuinely think that the meaning of life is to connect. I don’t often get bothered by people’s interpretations or opinions. I have plenty of ungenerous thoughts but my goal is that you won’t see them here (at least not too often).
3 pieces of advice that I tell myself on a regular basis:
If you're concerned that not enough folks are interacting with your art, first think about how (or IF) you are interacting with others' art.
You are not for everyone because you have a unique voice and interests. If you are lucky a few people will love what YOU bring. Only a very few of them will tell you this. Sorry! Try to enjoy making the art if you can because that is the only thing that you are guaranteed to get out of making art
Personally, my enjoyment of being on tumblr hinges on my enthusiasm for others' work, my willingness to interact, and my assumption that others are acting (most of the time) in good faith. If I find any of these flagging (AS THEY DO), or if I start feeling a certain way, I disengage for a bit and go touch grass.

Ask game — 7, 8 and/or 15 please and thank you! ♥️
Tolkien Fic Rec Ask Game
Thank you so much for your ask from this ask game, @from-the-coffee-shop-in-edoras! 💚
7. A character, ship, or part of the legendarium you wish there were more fics about.
I'm afraid I'll have to be boring with this answers. There are simply too many amazing fics out there to finish in one lifetime. The works I have open in 50 tabs on 3 devices alone would probably keep me busy for 2 years of non-stop reading. So I don't think there's much more I could reasonably ask for 😅
8. The character or ship that wasn't on your bingo card, but that fanfiction completely sold you on.
Well, I did this twice already here and here. But I don't see any reason why we can't do three more! ^_^
For the past year or so a lot of "wait! what? really?!" moments were triggered by Annatar/Sauron/Mairon/whatever his name might be which I truly did not see coming. Although "completely sold" is probably not quite true. The magic only works in very certain circumstances - making it all the more surprising when it DOES happen. For example with
The ever brilliant, slightly scary, utterly infatuated, insuffrable busybody and exhasperating best friend Mairon in @chthonion 's "The Second must begin with a choice". I unwisely had a peek at it while on vacation and had to bodily restrain myself from devouring everything in one or two sittings instead of spending time with the family I don't see often enough. Next to a fantastic repentant Maia it also features a hauntingly beautiful re-embodied Finrod looking for a way forward and a longsuffering High King unexpectedly acquiring a good friend and advisor.
Or @dilettantefeminist 's sublimely creepy and utterly bewitching Númenor-era Sauron in "Were art thou going, where hast thou been". The prose, the rhythm, the tone, the imagery are simply out of this world and make sure that you won't forget this 3,5k word story anytime soon.
And to mix things up a bit:
"The Last of the House of Steward" by @hobbitwrangler . I picked this up for some melancholic post-war Faramir feels; only to have his aunt Caeveneth steal the entire show with her shrewdness and a few scathing remarks! Absolutely brilliant and totally unexpected! I unapologetically love her!
15. That fic idea you're not going to write, but desperately hope another fanfic author will.
I've got to admit that I am still rather partial to that slow burn bickering-work-colleagues-to-lovers Celebrimbor workplace romcom we were joking about a while ago but since that caters to a grand audience of exactly one person - a.k.a. me - that story will forever remain locked in the privacy of my head (as it probably should) 😅
That being said I am - predictably - always in the market for a slice of Celebrimbor's life that does not fall into the two extremes of "renouncing his father in Nargothrond" or "being horribly tortured to death at the hands of Sauron", Elrond getting a hug and my dear Haldir getting a well-deserved break. So if anyone knows something fitting that bill please do let me know ^_^
@rebornflameofthenoldor alright, this isn't as far along in Tengwar as I thought, but here is the Palantir drawing WIP from AutoCAD. Below are captures of some ot the text that I have yet to transcribe. This is in English mode tengwar.
I work in electrical engineering, so it is SUPER FUN to interface with Tolkien from the STEM side of me!
All of this needs some proof-reading and tightening up... but I hope you enjoy!

For the I Love You Prompts (take your pick as to who!)
8. As an apology
AND/OR
20. Muffled, from the other side of the door
Hello! Sadly instead of spending yesterday scribbling away in my notebook while travelling, I instead spent yesterday suffering all the ills of transportation. That did mean that I got to escape from the horrors of [redacted] airport by mentally plotting out this wee fic. Anyway, have some Eothiriel!
‘I love you,’ muffled, from the other side of the door modesty screen | Éomer x Lothíriel | 1.7k | AO3
& if anyone wants to give me a project for my next few travelling days the game is here
Given that he had supposedly never seen them before, Éomer did his best impression of a man entering the Lady Lothíriel’s chambers for the first time. This turned out to be easier than he would have thought, given that he truly had never seen them by the light of a candle, never mind that of the sun, and had, at that time, had other things to focus his attention than the room about him.
The lady’s rooms were, at present, swarming with women. Cousins, aunts, servants, friends, all moved about the room with the frenetic precision of ants, laden with flowers, jewellery and various swathes of cloth whose purpose was a mystery to Éomer. He just had time to hear his bride’s voice before he felt a firm hand on his arm and a voice said, “You are not supposed to be here, my lord.”
Ah. Putting on his most charming smile, less because he thought it would be effective and more as proof of his fearlessness, Éomer turned to face the Lady Ivriniel. Lady Ivriniel distinguished herself as being the tallest, boldest and most intimidating of Lothíriel’s aunts. Éomer turned to find her greeting him with a friendly smile, and wondered if she too had put it on as a battle mask. “My lady,” he greeted, “you look lovely.”
“As do you, my lord,” said Lady Ivriniel. “But I am afraid that you cannot be here. It is customary for the groom to first see the bride upon her arrival at the ceremony.”
“Is that Éomer?” It was Lothíriel herself, and Éomer turned, before he even thought of it.
Maybe it was the rising sun shining through the window behind her, but Lothíriel appeared to be glowing. Her hair shone, black curls gleaming with sunrise gold, her face beamed with the flush of laughter and life. Even though the bags under them spoke of a night as sleepless as his own, her eyes gleamed golden-brown and creased with the strength of her smile.
“I came to see you.” Éomer began to take a step forward, only to have Lady Ivriniel’s hand firmly keep him in place. Across from him, Lothíriel’s attempt to move toward him was also stalled by another aunt laying a hand on her arm. “Well, to try to see you.”
“Aunty, do come on,” Lothíriel protested, directing her words to Ivriniel. “May he not see me?”
“In your shift?” Ivriniel cast meaningful look at the solitary white linen which enrobed her niece. “No. In your wedding attire? Certainly not. And speaking of which, Aya, are you ready to dress the bride?”
A tall, brown-skinned woman flanked by two maids emerged from behind a brightly painted screen. “The real question is whether the bride is ready to sit still.”
“I would just like to talk with her a little,” said Éomer, as Lothíriel was chivvied toward the screen and whatever lay behind it.
Lady Ivriniel hesitated a moment, casting one of those discomfortingly analytic looks of hers at him. Then she smiled, the soft indulging smile of an elder facilitating two youngsters in their new love. “Of course. She will wish to speak to you too.”
Unable to help himself, Éomer exclaimed, “But what about the tradition?”
Lady Ivriniel shrugged. “A little bending never hurt anyone. Although I must insist upon you not seeing her until the grand reveal. I assure you it shall be worth it.”
“I am awed already,” Éomer assured her.
The dreaded aunt gave him another of her searching looks before nodding in approval. “Good.”
Éomer followed her to the modesty screen, shaking his head to himself in bemusement. It was less that Éomer thought that Lady Ivriniel disliked him, rather that her liking him was firmly contingent on Lothíriel’s liking him.
Tapping lightly on the screen, Éomer called, “I have been permitted to speak with you. In private.” Those last words accompanied by a meaningful glance at Lady Ivriniel, who pursed her lips in amusement before leaving to put herself to use elsewhere.
“You are aware that I am very much not alone on my side,” came Lothíriel’s voice. She sounded almost deliriously light, as though she were both amused and slightly outside her own body. Éomer knew how she felt.
“We won’t be alone all day,” Éomer remarked. He understood it, a wedding as a time of celebration, a union between two families and, in this case, countries. That did not mean that an entire day of the two of them surrounded by people did not make him feel a little like grabbing her hand and leaping out a window. Béma knows I feel that I could fly. “On that note, how do you feel about the two of us just bolting?”
Lothíriel giggled. “But then you won’t get to see me all beautified.”
“You are always beautiful, Lothíriel.”
“Damn right she is,” came Aya’s agreement.
(“Aya, you’re supposed to be pretending you aren’t here,” Lothíriel reprimanded her.) “No, Éomer,” she said, and he could hear the excitement in her voice, “you will want to see me. Look to your left.”
Éomer looked to his left where Ivriniel and two other aunts were getting into an argument about what sounded like shoes. “Your aunt being a tyrant of colour schemes?”
“Your right then, Éomer, they must have moved them!”
Éomer looked, and immediately he felt something in his heart clench. Various maids sat, carefully organising flowers, freshly cut and blooming in vibrant blue, white and yellow. The marriage flowers of the Mark, ready to be woven into Lothíriel’s hair. “You are right,” said Éomer, and felt the words stick in his throat. “I would like to see that.”
“We do have a tradition of weaving flowers in a bride’s hair,” said Lothíriel, “but we favour blue and purple. I thought it would only be right for me to bear your people’s colours.”
And for all that he heard love and happiness in her voice he felt a trace of fear also. “How do you feel?” he asked, looking at the floor. As if even looking upon the painted wood would be too close to looking her in the eye.
There was silence, and Éomer cursed the screen and the sound around him. Was she taking a deep breath to steady herself? Was she turning to her companions for help or reassurance? Was she staring ahead, robbed of words, numb? In that moment, he wished even more so that they were alone, that they could retreat into some dark corner of the castle, or beneath the vine-clad eaves or to the security of woodland calm. Anywhere that he could look upon her face and hold her hand and see by the look in her eyes that all was well. That she was there.
“It is all very grand and serious,” said Lothíriel presently. “And I will admit that I am a little afraid. But I want that, the grandness and the seriousness also. I am not doing this lightly, Éomer. I am doing this because I wish to do it with all that I am, and I intend to give this—and you and Rohan—everything.” She paused again, and when she spoke again she began so softly that she was forced to start again to be heard. “I am glad that it is you, Éomer. I am glad that you are the one I will be with at the end of today.”
He wanted so badly to embrace her then, to be able to hold her close and tangle his fingers in her hair and feel her warm and soft against him, the rhythm of her heart against his, to be able to tell that he was glad too, beyond glad, practically exultant. “I must confess, Lothíriel, that when I rose this morning I was not looking forward to seeing you, I was looking forward to being able to take your hand.”
“You’ve taken my hand many times,” she observed, light teasing in her voice.
“And I’ll be taking your hand for the rest of our lives,” he assured her, and he prayed silently that their lives would be long, that there would be decades of him interlacing her fingers with him as they lay in bed or sat at table or simply walked somewhere, he didn’t give a damn where. “Because I meant what I said, Lothíriel. I mean us to do this together, hand in hand.”
“I believe you,” and it was as though he could feel the intensity of her gaze upon him, her hand reaching out for his, nimble fingers reaching to squeeze his. “I would not be marrying you if I did not believe you the best of men, Éomer. Besides, if I do not marry you, how else am I to make Éowyn my sister?”
Éomer chuckled at that, and he wished again that the screen was gone, that he could see the twinkle in her eye, the dimple in her left cheek as she grinned.
“I love you,” he said.
“What?”
“Hmm?”
“What did you say, Éomer, I can’t hear.”
Huffing in annoyance, Éomer muttered, “Curse this screen.” Louder, he said, “I love you, Lothíriel.” A passing aunt glanced sideways at him and Éomer decided to hell with it. “You know what, I’ll say it a third time, I love you, Lothíriel, and I can’t wait to be your husband!”
He heard Lothíriel laugh, half at the absurdity of him announcing it to the room, partly out of sheer joy, and Éomer thanked Béma that he was lucky enough to be able to hear that sound.
“Iċ lufie þē!”
Éomer froze, his mouth falling open in confusion and delight. I love you, in Rohirric, spoken in transparent affection. Accented, the Dol Amroth lilt noticeable, and yet spoken with the exactness of a phrase given much practice.
Éomer smiled, warm certainty taking root inside him. “This is going to be a beautiful day.”
Here is the latest in my continuing series of ficlets about House of Eorl figures from Appendix A. This one is about Fréaláf, who is seriously underrated as a king. He saved Rohan’s independence by retaking Edoras from invading Dunlendings, and then he did the hard work of restoring the country after war/occupation, an environmental disaster, mass starvation and the first leftward jog in the Line of Eorl. He also notably supported Gondor’s decision to install Saruman in Isengard as a friendly neighbor, which didn’t work out well in the end but was absolutely the right choice at the time given the information he had. A little over 300 words about him below or on AO3.
**********
As coronations go, Fréaláf’s is more than modest.
A fire struggles to warm the stable that is serving in place of fire-ravaged Meduseld, and there is no feast while meat is yet in short supply. There is only ale and good cheer, plainly dressed men and women who toast their new king while their children tussle playfully with the hounds among the rushes that cover the floor.
It is all distinctly unimpressive to Saruman’s eye, even with allowances made for the harrowing losses of war and famine. The Rohirrim have ever been prideful and stubborn, but at least they had fine horses, rich orchards and great timbers to justify their pride. If this is all they can muster now even for their king then surely they have nothing to offer anyone else, and Saruman’s aching old bones can only regret the long, bumpy ride it took to reach this shadow of Eorl’s realm.
Still, Fréaláf approaches and extends a gaunt hand. His surcoat is threadbare, his boots worn, and Saruman takes the proffered hand with stifled disdain. But the king’s grip is surprisingly strong, and his smile is friendly and open, nothing like the last king’s haughty smirk. Old Helm was too stubborn to seek the counsel of others, let alone to heed it, and his reign had been fruitless for those who deal in influence and strategy. But this smile says that Fréaláf will rule differently. It’s the smile of a man whose people are still hungry, whose borders need strengthening, whose hold on his uncle’s throne remains vulnerable to challenge from within and without. A man in need of allies.
The first stirrings of possibility ease the ache in Saruman’s joints, and his well-lined face breaks into a smile of his own, carefully stripped of eagerness.
Tell me, Fréaláf King, wouldn’t it be nice to have a friend installed in Isengard at last?
**********
People with good quote memories might recognize this coronation as the place/time when Saruman developed the less than stellar opinion of Rohan that he snarks to Théoden after Helm’s Deep (“what is the house of Eorl but a thatched barn where brigands drink in the reek, and their brats roll on the floor among the dogs”).
Hey there! Thank you so much for your ask (and sharing this fic rec tag game earlier ^_^)! So, let's see:
8. The character or ship that wasn't on your bingo card, but that fanfiction completely sold you on?
Oh, there are so soo many. Let's go for these three immediately popping into my mind:
@scary-grace ‘s 70s AU Thranduil x Bard the Bowman in the simply stunning gothic romance “Kairos”. I always knew in an academic kind of way that this was a big ship but somehow never thought about them much until stumbling over this breathtaking story. Absolutely epic and totally canon to me now ^_^ I so need to find some time to finally get back to this story after life got in the way when I was about halfway through.
@thescrapwitch 's Maeglin in the absolutely gorgeous “Reforged” which I also desperately want to get back to. I knew who he was before picking up the story mainly for the promise of some more of ScrapWitch's superb Celebrimbor but did not have a lot of feelings about him. Until getting to know him through this brilliant story that is probably going to hurt A LOT in all the right ways once I have the opportunity to get back to it.
(Also: honorable shout-out to rowdykid!Haldir picking fights with Elrond and Elros. That is SO canon to me now! 😅)
And then of course my absolute queen of this category: @from-the-coffee-shop-in-edoras . Her simply gorgeous, short pieces on Obscure Rohirrim TM and Tolkien folks getting just a few short lines in canon are usually my first ever encounter with these characters and never fail to define an instant gold standard for me. Just to name a few:
“For want of a Nail” and Dúnhere who now will forever be a Good Man married to and insanely in love with a kick-ass woman named Lithcynd for me,
Elfhelm in “Sleepless” who I’ll probably never ever be able to accept in any other way or form,
or Gwindor in the absolutely stunning “Biding his time”
15. That fic idea you're not going to write, but desperately hope another fanfic author will.
Sadly, I am no writer and will forever happily devour what the amazingly talented writers of tumblr and AO3 are willing to share with us.
Since I am always in the market for more Celebrimbor I'd very much love to find out how people imagine his decision to leave Valinor behind came about. Was he following his father and uncles? Or was it his own free decision? And what made him take it? How did his mom react? Who did he leave behind?
I am pretty certain there are stories out there about this which I just haven't found yet. So if you know of any: please let me know! ^_^
Howdyy I got an iud and my (cis male) bf is now finishing inside of me with no protection and then after that we keep messing around and he fingers me and then I go clean up. Besides stds (not worried we are both clean) and utis (i pee and shower after) is there anything else I should be concerned about? Merci

So you know how talent scouts apparently like, go to malls to look for pretty people and ask them if they want to be a model?
Do you think that, once she figured out a given Cleon's predilections, Demerzel (in her Chetter Hummin disguise) just went to various parts of Trantor looking for people with the right parts/aesthetic/kinks and asking them if they want to be a courtesan?
Oooh is there a long-running reality TV franchise, Trantor's Next Top Gossamer Courtesan?
Oooh but these are very interesting thoughts from @nejkthonlyhrfrhc - how much of attraction is nature vs nurture?
I got curious and found an article in Nature about identical twins with "discordant" sexual orientations and apparently it's a lot of nurture - the "non-shared environment" apparently has a lot to do with the development of sexual arousal patterns.
So there probably is a decent amount of variation between Cleons, given how much difference there is in their environment based on how on fire the galaxy is at any given time (and how busy Demerzel is).
The other question then, is how good Cleons are at knowing themselves and what they're actually into. There probably is an official Cleonic "type" but I'd estimate at most 30% of Cleons are actually into that to the exclusion of anything else. So even if you had Cleons fill out a survey, it probably wouldn't get you that accurate of answers.
Which is what Demerzel just has tracking on all palace computers to monitor what porn the Cleons are watching and that's how like 70% of Gossamer Courtesans get selected.
My first piece ever for @fall-for-tolkien's Scribbles & Drabbles!
I was trying to come up a prompt I'd like to see and kept coming back to Elrond and Ioreth meeting. It seemed pretty likely to me that Elrond would visit the Houses of Healing while in Minas Tirith. I always really enjoyed Ioreth the books, and Elrond seems very patient with (and used to) especially talkative seniors
I am very excited to see what the authors who claimed it come up with and I had a lot of fun drawing them!
When Limby orders ice cream with a friend, she isn’t expecting the day to quickly evolve into a full-on existential panic attack. When she notices the melting ice cream and realizes the impermanence of all things, however, that’s exactly what happens.
Limby takes off into the park, deeply upset, and soon enough finds herself face to face with the physical manifestation of her anxiety over the finite nature of all things, who is named Alyssa. As the two of them talk, however, two truths become apparent.
There’s beauty in impermanence, and Alyssa is hot as heck!
This erotic tale is 4,000 words of sizzling human on sentient existential dread action and lesbian physically manifested anxiety love.

That fic idea you're not going to write, but desperately hope another fanfic author will.
Silm Fic Rec Game
WHAT A GREAT QUESTION 😈
So I’m not counting anything I put into the Silm Kink Meme, because I feel like my contributions there are pretty obvious right. However, THE fic I would love to see written is The Elros Years.
By which I mean an account of Elros Tar-Minyatur’s kingship of Númenor, but specifically as a dry, bureaucratic political comedy, maybe in the style of in the thick of it. I already have thoughts on what Elros would be like as a king, and TLDR imo he is basically just a young Robert Baratheon, hard into wine and women, spends much of his time on the throne either hunting boar or thinking about hunting boar, and in the later years ie when he’s straight up almost 500 years old he’s an ‘old man yells at sky’ in terms of politics, conservative and somewhat of a luddite, having been raised in a warzone by the noldor’s number one nostalgia dickrider, in a society that is notoriously very quick im terms of scientific, political and technological advancement, but is still 6’5 with Lúthien’s face and Beren’s beard and looks to be in the prime of his youth so you can’t even wheel him away from the podium ygm. An account of why Númenorean kings practice abdication as opposed to passing kingship on via death, and why that reason has 1000% to do with Elros the 500 Year Old Menace and his seventeen hundred concubines.
I would like Elrond to be in the fic as well, but Elrond would be Gil-galad’s right-hand dweeb and idk man polishing scrolls and shit, living vicariously through Elros’ letters about how he had his court physician invent a fuckchair for his study so he could dictate policy and get his cock sucked at the same time.
