Short Hiatus Notice

So I’m sure you all have noticed my absence. I still have my muse for Nux but my activity has been flooded and I haven’t been feeling rping for him right now despite having a muse. I’m going to focus on some of my other rp blogs for the time being.

I’m going to finish the icons for the giveaway though, but my presence on here will be sporadic at best for at least a week.

When I come back I’ll probably clean out who I follow and my drafts (I’ll let you know if something gets dropped/ask if it’s okay to drop it)

This scene is so interesting in terms of character exposure for a war boy (like I said before I really hold with the idea that Nux is never really an individual character in the film but rather remains a symbol of all war boys.)

Look at all the things he assumes:

-that the bloodbag is his ally, even if he points his gun at him

-that he was fighting to catch Furiosa all along, absolutely no other motive, even slaves must be completely loyal to Joe! Right?

-even though only a short while ago he was using this guy like an object, doesn’t even occur to him that the bloodbag might have a bone to pick?

-that the fight is over even though only Furiosa has been subdued (again, wives are objects, shiny chrome objects)

-the question: What are you gonna ask for? First of all, why is he asking, is he just bored, curious? Do bloodbags ever get talked to in the Citadel?

This is amazing because what do you bloody think an organ donor with a muzzle is going to ask for? Freedom! But suddenly he’s on the same level as the war boy. He can ask for stuff, he’s not an object anymore.

-why does the bloodbag even get to ask for stuff though? Why doesn’t Nux take the credit for himself, why did he suddenly start seeing this guy as a human? Or, more interestingly, why, before, did he feel no qualms about using this human as an object, and taking him along with him during his unsuccessful suicide? What changed, or didn’t change here?

-He just gives up the jacket; I guess he’s so totally sure he’ll be rewarded he doesn’t feel like he has to worry about it.

-He doesn’t notice ANY of the bloodbag’s trauma.

So what, is this because of the war boy mentality, the pragmatic utilitarianism that they practice daily, or perhaps a belief in a man proving his worth in battle which the bloodbag has just very well done? Or maybe he is just so brainwashed he really believes everyone has their place in the world and if you’re a bloodbag, too bad for you, but you’ve no call to argue, and if you’re a warboy, well, same applies?

Questions, questions. It’s a lovely scene either way.

This is interesting. We already know that Furiosa worked her way up the War Boy hierarchy to become Imperator after being rejected as a breeder; it strikes me as possible that a bloodbag who helps their captors may also be given the opportunity to work their way up to War Boy status. Possibly that kind of thing has happened before and isn’t uncommon, in fact it’s so common that Nux can easily assume that the bloodbag is on his side right up until Max punches him in the sternum.

Additionally, it may be that Nux may no longer see Max as an object (’he can ask for stuff”), but still struggles to see Max as a wholly autonomous individual with his own motivations. Later, Nux tells Capable that it was HIS bloodbag driving the War Rig that killed Angharad. Even if he’s simply acknowledging that Joe will see Max’s actions as Nux’s responsibility, this gives us insight into how War Boy society makes attributions for responsibility and ownership and individual identity. Nux’s bloodbag is a part of him, therefore he has no reason to think that the bloodbag would work against him (I could go further into analyzing this from the perspective of amoebic self theory, but that might be too esoteric so I’ll stop now).

Oooh, ooh, but this helps me with a thought I had earlier about most of Nux’s needs and wants being extensions of the Immortan’s needs and wants- there is an attempt to strip war boys of independence and make them all part of a ‘machine’ (perhaps an apt comparison considering their cult revolves around machinery) whose sole purpose is to provide true comfort for only one person : Joe. The hopes and dreams of a war boy are limited, and so is his individual identity. Nux wants to die for Joe, to chase down the Rig for Joe, to capture Furiosa for Joe- everything he does is for Joe. So maybe it’s not surprising that Nux assumes his bloodbag would work for him the same way he works for the Immortan.

Then again, he must have forgotten Max is a ‘raging feral’ who’s got that muzzle on for a reason.

And maybe this moment where he thinks, wait, I did what Joe asked and I’ve earned a reward, is a rare ‘what do I want’ moment for him, and maybe that’s why he asks Max what he’d ask for? It’s such an unusual situation for him.

And of course all he wants is to drive the war rig. There’s those limits again.

(there was also a tag in one of the reblogs where someone was talking about Nux fighting the wives without actually hurting them- do remember he can’t hurt them, the Immortan wants them back in one piece, there’s no prize if he damages the ‘goods’, and possibly terrible consequences instead, the first one being absolute failure to serve his god’s command)
