#DIADIC. โ private rp blog for leif from fire emblem: genealogy of the holy war and fire emblem: thracia 776, written by n ( he/him or she/her, 26 ), established nov 2021. golden deer student. affiliated with the officers academy.
portrayal notes
leif is written post-FE4, specifically having left for the officers academy in grann year 780. as a result, this places him approximately two years after the end of genealogy. in the time since, as per his ending cards, leif spent time helping fight in the emancipation wars across jugdral before stopping back in the munster district to handle some affairs there. for my portrayal, i hc his journey to have taken him through agustria first before going to help out in verdane and then silesse.
currently, leif entrusts the munster district to a variety of people while heโs away at garreg mach. heโs assigned government roles to various characters from FE5 as per their own ending cards, but as for whoโs running house leonster, in toaverse, that is his tacticianย august. leif is also notย crowned king yet, still being a prince title-wise. he plans to become king once he is done his tutelage in fรณdlan.
whenever FE4 and FE5 contradict one another text-wise, i almost always favor FE5โฒs depiction of the events over FE4. examples of this are how this results in him meeting ced earlier than in FE4 and how he fought along diarmuid without seliphโs army first. thereโs certain exceptions to this rule like how i donโt default ced to being the wielder of forseti given that FE4 parentages can vary.
following FE5โฒs events over FE4โฒs, leif had been engaged to nannaย post-fe5 and post-ch8 of fe4,ย but due to developments during toa itself, the two have annulled their engagement and chosen to start over their romantic relationship. leifโs publicity on his engagement during the events of game canon is no secret if someone sought the information out but was also not something he deeply advertised either, so castmates may choose whether they knew or not.
given that FE5 follows a route split, currently i have it so leif canonically went down Route Bย in toaโs timeline of events, but i am still open to having all of the route A characters be relevant / recruited in some sense even if plot beats from route B are favored. this can be treated on a case-by-case basis.
iโve also elected to default to all bosses in FE5 are to be treated as if they were capturedย and releasedย by leif rather than killed, assuming they have a low enough build stat for this to be possible. this includes the likes of rumei and reinhardt. i can change this on a case-by-case basis as well, but for now, leifโs run was very mercy-based and capture-heavy.
i use and prefer the FireLizardย translation for FE5 and the Reparations translation of FE4 for my metas and interpretations, though i use CYL names by default for locations and characters (assuming i remember them). i am willing to bend on names in case someone has an alternative preference though exceptย for leifโs own name.
my interpretation is primarily from the FE4 and FE5 game texts and events (with a bias towards FE5) but i doย also treat the FE5 novellaย โFall of Leonsterโ as canon to my portrayal as well. i do notย take any of the manga or light novel adaptations of either FE4 or FE5 as canon however. i take slight cues from FE13โฒs dlc.
although leif and emblem leif are separate people, i donโt mind muses from elyos recognizing him or referring to things that emblem leif has said. if an elyosian muse wants to have spent any time engaged with emblem leif and take parts of that for interactions, feel free! even if thisย leif wonโt recognize your muse back, heโs kinda familiar with the concept of his other self by this point.

Unhappy with it? Of course, a small part of her whispers in the back of her mind. Of course she's unhappy with it. But... does she have any right to be? The question wedges into her chest until cracks form around it.
Of course, she can hear the words of gentler souls telling her. A lodestar, her night sky, the sun she so adores no matter the turmoil it incites in the boy before her. Those precious people whom she loves, who make life worth living, whose hearts she has slithered into like a worm in a pretty apple. And the voices behind them whisper no, no, no.
Work harder -- atone. You haven't done enough. Stop trying -- give up. You've already done too much. Can she be so sure her love isn't manipulation? Perhaps she subconsciously weasels herself into the comfort of their affection. Some days she thinks Eremiyah turned away from the good in her; other days that Marth only turned away from the bad. Has she atoned enough yet to be unhappy? To want more?
"I..." Katarina brings her fingers to a conscious stillness, gray eyes pinned to the ground. "Can I... ask you a question too, then...?
"When... do you deserve to talk to more people? Or... to try to understand?"
ย ย ย ย โI don't think you need to 'deserve' that,โ Leif's answer comes swiftly but not with the strength of a lion's roar. It is quiet, it is contemplativeโ equal to the effort that Katarina clearly puts into trying to grasp this answer.
Leif will never have all the answers, and he certainly does not whilst he is still so young and green around the gills. But for what answers he lacks now, he still holds beliefs and convictions.
โIf you had to earn that, then nobody would listen to each other and learn. The world would never improve that way.โ He holds the belief that these are the steps he must take, and if he were to doubt his ability to take them, he knows he would never move at all.
โDo you want people to be happy, Katarina?โ Leif asks, taking the position again. โIf you never talk to understand them, you'll never know how to prevent them from being sad.โ
He remembers a time when Dagdar used to joke about how they all played house, with a hint of something to the man's words that Finn had never really puzzled out. He'd denied it then, of course. It felt strange to label Eyvel's generosity as such, and Finn's exhausted eyes had been too focused on the future for those kinds of thoughts.
He'd never stopped to consider what Leif or Nanna might have thought, only that they were housed and fed.
Finn frowns. Does he even not? But he frowns in response to the confession, trying to understand why. "โฆwhy would you have wanted me for that?'
Because Finn had been there. But if it had been another in his place, it would have just as easily been them. It is not that he wants Finn, only that the knight fits into a hole in the puzzle piece. The image is all wrong, but it's good enough.
"IโฆI have no right to think I might even attempt to stand in your father's shoes." Compared to the shadow that Quan casts, Finn is still a boy learning how to fight, that fails his lord, that has no business carrying the weight of such a responsibility. "It would have been an insult to you and his memory to attempt such a thing."
Leif so oddly looks like the boy Finn remembers right now.
ย ย ย ย Leif figured the response he'd get would be something like this. He never brought it up because he knew Quan's ghost would kill his delusion sooner than he could even petition for it to come true. To ask or say it aloud to Finn would be just the same as to kill it even faster.
For the boy who wished to keep on dreaming, he could never say it to the one who he pictured in the center of that very dream.
โ...of all the men in my life, you were the one I liked the most, Finn.โ
Yet still, Leif tries to explain himself anyway even though he knows this dream is ending. One last farewell: a note to end it on with sincerity rather than his anger and his jealousy.
โDagdar, King Ulster, Duke Tarrah, Asbel's father, August, Dryas... Many women were my mothers and sisters, but...โ This is the eulogy he writes for a man still living, face full of mourning. โ...no one was ever my father besides you, Finn...โ
Altena snorts a laugh. No, she really didn't think Finn had it in him to do something fun. She can't even remember if she's ever really seen him smile. "You're right. He seems more like he would be the victim of a prank rather than the one orchestrating it." It's probably a good thing that he's employed here as a knight rather than a professor. Some of the students can be pretty ruthless.
She barely has a moment to consider reacting to Leif's admission about his own experience with the Finn Mints when he abruptly turns the spotlight right back onto her. A brutal tactic that heats color into her cheeks.
"NO!" She answers too loud and too quickly. "It was just one dance. That's it."
Their uncle had called her out on it, too. Had that been before or after Finn approached her. Had she even danced with Minerva at that point? The events of the evening blur in her memory as she tries to piece everything together to figure out Finn's motivations. Had he seen it? Had Sigurd told him about it? Both options are equally horrifying.
"He couldn't have been trying to play wingman, could he? Why would he possibly want to do that?"
ย ย ย ย At Altena's outburst, Leif's eyes widen. After a moment, the prince realizes his sister must presume he's seen something more than he actually did. He had asked, not knowing who it could be at all, but Altena clearly has someone in mind...
(Better not to embarrass her if she's this insistent now.)
So he lets her be, letting her control the pace of the conversation as she pleases, silent until she poses her own question. It's not an unreasonable line of inquiry; a man as serious and unfun as Finn hardly seemed the type to play matchmaker. Selphina would complain to anybody who would listen (and those who won't) about how indelicate Finn was when it comes to matters of the heart after all.
But that's not to say Leif thinks there's NO fathomable reason Finn would put himself in that position...
โI don't know if that's what he's doing, but it might do with the fact you have our father's brand if he really is,โ Leif suggests matter-of-factly. โI have to make an heir for Leonster's throne, but I won't ever be able to pass down Njรถrun's brand... There might be people who would want me to name a child of yours my heir instead, Altena.โ
He denies her first, and though his reasons are entirely logical, Mitama still pouts in response. It hardly matters to her whether or not he will waste hours away as some painter's muse. Those are necessities. Things that must be done because he is important and will someday be nothing more than his deeds and his portrait in the pages of history.
And in the end, the conclusion he comes to is partially right. She does not want to be alone. They had both confessed to the same wish in different flavours last year. She wants to spend what time she has with those she cares about as often as she can.
But no one will paint Mitama after today, and no one will leave her portrait to find its place in history. If this will be the only evidence years from know that they knew each other and were friends...then it seems shameful to waste that chance.
"If you understood that already, then you should have just done so." And though she continues pouting behind her bouquet, she is not a good enough performer to mask the pleased excitement in her tone.
Not for the first time, Leif gives her no chance to understand what he suggests before picking her up. Mitama squeaks and has to catch herself with a hand braced on his shoulder, but she falls into a fit of laughter soon enough, loud enough that a few curious glances go their way.
"Alright, alright! You have done a wonderful job at showing off!" Boys and their feats of strength... She shakes her head fondly.
It is...so different from last year. She is glad for him. Even if both their wishes are still works in progress, even if they have many years ahead of them to work towards making them come true, it feels like a small step towards that. She may not understand what it is that he says, but that is alright. Maybe one day she will know. For now, she is content with the emotion of it, returned silently in full.
The pout is long gone when her feet touch ground once more. "Thank you." He has gone through enough, it does not due to be greedy. Mitama slips one of her flowers from her bouquet and, without asking, does her best to slip it in place in his. "There, for putting up with my selfish demand of your time. You are free to go win your little competition now."
ย ย ย ย โHave I? I think I can show off a bit more...โ Leif replies facetiously, recognizing very much that Mitama is not necessarily wanting him to show off in full. Nor does he even necessarily think it is entirely appropriate in a ball like this or if his outfit at present works best for it.
No matter what he likes to do, he does still want his outfit to remain in-tact for all the effort he put into wearing it today.
(Unbeknownst to him, this would not be a wish he'd be granted tonight.)
So in the end, he lets her down, their image captured in full. For it, he's granted the flower he didn't actually anticipate getting once he'd been rejected it once. He takes a moment to register this truth, blinking dumbly at it before he at last asks:
โAre you sure?โ
Perhaps it's a silly thing to ask. She and he are both clearly aware that there are not an infinite number of hours in a single night, and each minute of it counts when competing to exchange with as many people as possible. It's a neverending revolving evening, faces coming in and out, mere drops in an ocean's worth of people.
It's the natural way the world, indeed this life, has worked for Leif. For as long as he has known hunger, he has known this newness at its breakneck pace.
โIf it's selfish, that means it's because you wanted it, right, Mitama?โ Leif takes his flower, once rejected, and puts it in her bouquet at last, taking that certain step closer to do so, to press his advance and make it known even when such closeness is unnecessary; at times, to drive a point is more important than the point being made at all, he finds. โIf that's what you want, I can spare you a bit more time. I don't mind.โ
The point tonight is also a point he drives more so for himself: that he is competent enough now to not turn faces into just mere memories, that he can afford to take a stop longer than he used to before.
โEven with our trade done, that doesn't mean I have to be done with you, Mitama.โ
The Leif of today is not the Leif he was when he was so much younger.

The answer he is given is somehow reassuring and intensely worrying at the same time. More of the latter, if he is honest with himself. His expression thins once more as his lips are pressed together in resistance of the emotion that wants to twist his expression into...something.
"I..."
Leif's abrupt protests give him pause as both volume and colour find themselves in possession of the younger. Finn stares for a moment, then frowns. He thought it had been fairly obvious what he had been talking about throughout this discussion.
"...you should not be doing that either." The new ground that Leif reveals is far more comfortable to place his feet upon, and Finn feels his shoulders finally begin to relax as he follows his lord's direction. "You represent your homeland and your family even in those moments. Is this a common experience for you?" What in the world had Fodlan made of him?
ย ย ย ย โI wouldn't call it common...โ Leif speaks dodgily, realizing he's throwing himself from one interrogation straight into another. If he was invoking the stern father beforehand, now he's invoking the even more stern knight.
A fully familiar picture now, the slightly new one faded and replaced within a blink of an eye.
Leif clears his throat, trying again.
โBut sometimes it can't be helped!! The one time I got drunk, it was for Ares's sake, got it??โ
veyle tenses under his gaze, drawing in on herself for some semblance of comfort. she's used to being stared atโ evaluatedโ but it's a little scarier when it's an emblem she admires.
he doesn't say she isn't weakโ so it's true. he really does...
"it does matter." she mumbles, staring at her feet. if she isn't strong she can't be a good dragon like the divine one. it matters way too much.
but when she looks up and she sees the expression on his face, she stops thinking about how strong or weak she is for a second to worry about him.
"ah, i'm sorry. i didn't..." she reaches out hesitantly towards him. she doesn't understand why he's making that face, but she knows she doesn't want him to make it anymore. "a-are you okay?"
ย ย ย ย When Veyle says it does matter, can Leif really claim to the contrary? Despite his own denial of it in the moment, and perhaps he does think about it that way in that specific scope, when he hears her deny him right back, it feels like an echo of so many of the petulant, bitter remarks he would have said too.
Because, when one's weak, it really does feel important. It feels all the more important when you can see what you can lackโ even if not for who you wish to save but instead who you are yourself.
It keeps him quiet, uncertain of what he could even say to be convincing as a result. But before he can find his words, Veyle apologizes anyway.
โ...I'm fine, Veyle,โ he snaps himself out of his thoughts for the sake of answering her, realizing belatedly the inappropriate nature of his reactions. To her, he's an Emblem, and with it, a stronger and more heroic figure than he actually is. To speak his frustrations, to speak a sliver of his heart, would be to shatter any illusion. โBut...โ
Words fail him as a result. He forces his hand to unclench, doesn't shake off the way she reaches out, but his expression remains that moue of frustration bleeding with melancholy.
โAh! Don't slow down!โ a voice farther out, closer to the bridge leading to the northern part of the monastery, cries out in the night. โWe'll never make it to the Goddess Tower like that!โ
Leif turns his head at that. They're not voices he recognizes, but he can't say they're ones he wants to get in trouble. But when he looks back at Veyle, he makes his concession, weighing her ego over any false sense of altruism.
Because at the end of the day, that was something he wished to protect too for her.
โWell, they're all yours, aren't they, Veyle?โ
Like a chain of daisies, Maria places her trust in Ronan's trust; when she turns her eyes toward the weathered steps, it is not in trepidation, but a blinking curiosity. The wear of color that revealed paths of habit, and how it paled in a different manner to that which was bleached by the sun -- this is neither a separate nor smaller thing to the water that soon stretches out before them, but one beautiful, peaceful scene.
"What makes them inedible?" The little cleric's question floats alongside her, balancing on her fingertips when she stretches out a hand to watch its reflection touch a tide pool. Scurrying around to a wider side of one, nearer to their dutiful guide, she brushes her dress against her legs and crouches. Her gaze settles on the algae, and after a beat-- "Hello, Miss Lady," she whispers, wiggling her fingers at the silent tide, "Or whoever's there!"
With a flourish she springs back to her feet, pivoting on one heel and allowing the other to spin through the air. A wave to Ronan as she passes him, and once she's wandered a few steps further, another outstretched and playfully thrown toward Leif.
"That's right! I've never been fishing before." As far as grand little dreams went, it wasn't entirely off the list, though it rested quite peacefully below a great many other things. Perhaps if she made time for it, she could see that legendary golden fish one day... Oh, but the ocean is too beautiful today to keep plotting for tomorrow.
She laughs as she spins, and she spins as she laughs, a short-lived thing that swings her smile squarely upon the others.
"Yeah -- I want to hear, too! And if you guys are willing to teach me, then it's my turn to be the student again! Right? Hee hee... edible or not, I'm really looking forward to it!"
While Leif and Maria spread out to explore on their own, Ronan backtracks to the more level part of the shore to unload his bag. He's brought a few nets and small buckets with him, along with his tackle box that he'd managed to slip out of his bedroom at home without his mother stopping him with her litany of questions and stories. Every now and then, he glances up to see what might have caught his guests' attention, noting the way Leif seems to hang back far more than Maria does who, first time or not, seems fearless as she totters and spins in a sort of songless dance between the pools. Thinking that no one is paying too much attention to him, Ronan can't help but smile.
"Oh, the smaller fish are pretty boney. Some of them are poisonous, too." By the time either Leif or Maria look back at him, his smile has been replaced with a grimace over a private memory. He'd found out just how bad some of the tidepool creatures were from experience. But that meant that he had a pretty good idea of which ones to avoid if they wanted to make a lunch out of what they could get their hands on.
Scooping up the buckets and nets, and leaving his back by the cliffs, Ronan half-sprints back to catch up with Leif and Maria, handing them each a bucket and a net as he passes.
"Crabs and clams are usually good though. Do you know what those are?" he asks Maria, then glances into the nearest tidepool. "Oh! Here's one. Look." Taking her wrist, he drops down into a crouch to point to a bivalve shell nestled among the rocks at the bottom, nearly camouflaged. It wasn't very big, but he reaches in to pull it free with his fingers, then sets it on his palm to show her and Leif.
"Just toss these into some boiling water and the shells will pop right open. We'll need a few more for it to be worthwhile though." Kneeling, he scoops water into a bucket and drops the clam in. "If we don't manage to find anything around here though, I've stashed one of my fishing rods nearby. We can take turns casting."
ย ย ย ย Leif watches Maria's greeting, eyes tracking the direction of her little wave (that's what that wiggling is, right?) to find who their extra guest is. He expects a little crab or other, but to his eyes, there is nothing immediately sticking out from the seawater that makes it obvious just what it is the princess greets.
Strange though the moment might be from his perspective, it does make the boy look upon the sand and the sea for any detail he can, chasing nothing more than myths unknowingly in the act of looking for curiosities. Compared to deeper seas, shallow waters here hold plenty for the eyesโ a kaleidoscope of life and colors all pooled into the intertidal shore. The rocky ground beneath has each and every shape clearer to see, so close to the surface, and the variety of aquatic life collected here in one spot feels like a miracle. Big or small, a myriad sits not unlike the monastery, Leif thinks, or his own army from years prior.
Leif doesn't find Maria's 'Miss Lady,' but he instead finds a crowd he can touch with just his fingers so long as he looks and reaches out.
Leif's attention is grabbed at the sound of buckets jostling with Ronan's speedy steps, head tilting back up to see their trio returned to be closer knit.
โWho doesn't know what a crab or clam is??โ Leif pipes up, brow raised as he takes the proffered bucket and net. โAre there really places that don't have them?โ
For as many countries as Leif has been to, he supposes, in hindsight, he didn't take the time to really notice what was or wasn't there, taking these things as a given. The raised brow scrunches along with his other, now in sync, as he mulls over this before he drops to crouch as well. He peeks into Ronan's bucket to get a second look at the clam he'd shown them just before, committing it to memory before he faces the rocks again.
โMussels are the best,โ he goes on to say, looking anew at the shallow waters. โBut I never got any before the sea stars took them from me first... Aha!โ
His hand shoots out, finding another clam, beaming as his eyes sparkle in the victory, no matter how small the prize in his hand.
ย ย ย ย If the beauty of the world was not meant for those who dwell on it, then who was it for exactly? But as the question rests on the tip of Leif's tongue, when the prince goes back to stare at Sephiran, the man's dignified and certain mien when paired with the grim, philosophical words he speaks steals the heir's words.
This is a man who believed something grimโ something beyond what Leif could likely imagine as he was now.
The raven-haired man's subsequent claims about suffering and inevitability only further cements it. In the face of that, did Leif have the right argument to counter it just yet? Frustrating as it was, enough to furrow Leif's brows further, it keeps him voiceless.
That is, untilโ
โ...I don't understand the way you think,โ Leif admits. Faced with what he thought was a nihilist point of view, suddenly, Sephiran speaks of joy as if he were not murdering it with his words prior. โBut... if I spend time with you, see life through your steps, will I understand it one day?โ
And perhaps, then, Leif might be able to arm himself with a better argument when that day comes.
โPerhaps.โ Elusive, as he often chose to be, Sephiran almost seems unwilling to grant another word in response. Almost. โโฆ I should hope that is not the only lesson you take from me.โ
Was he teasing? Certainly not, though he allows his voice to carry that gentle cadence as if he were- perhaps the lightness was at odds with what the boy proposed. Would it be better if he understood, or if he never did? A question that had no answer, at least not one he could give honestly.
"But if it helps you find your faith, then I will not stop you."
Spoken as if he did not believe it would- in the end, he wonders if he was a suitable instructor at all, or if the boy would be left more lost than he started.
ย ย ย ย โYou don't??โ โfind me childish?? Leif has to blink a few times in response as he lets that idea settle; with how composed Seliph often seemed in Leif's eyes, with how often Leif himself fell short, he presumed it to be a given: that anyone better than him might think it unbecoming of him to express himself so explosively. Leif scratches the side of his own cheek, flustered anew but for a different reason.
He finds himself at a loss for how to take this. It's a sweet victory, the relief felt to finally let the bowstring release after what must have been over a decade of keeping it drawn tight. Even before Leif has met Seliph, such lessons were drilled in as important.
A prince keeps his cool. It is around Seliph he thought this lesson one of the most important, but...
(Did Seliph have moments like these when Leif didn't see?)
Perhaps with someone different, Leif concludes. Though whom, he's unsure after his conversation with Deimne earlier that night. Umber eyes watch his cousin shift, all of a sudden overly interested and intrigued yet tongue-tied; the thing to let his tongue go is the direct question aimed his way.
โAh, we agreed to compete again this year. But now that you mention it, I haven't seen him since either...โ Perhaps owed to Leif's own fixation of these new displays of technology. But if Seliph hasn't seen Ares much either, could Leif still be in the race...? A seed of hope blooms, reigniting Leif's competitive side to make up for things in the second half of the night, but at the same time, this new mystery compels Leif to want to think on the whyโ why might Ares be hard to find?
โHm... Is it possible he found one person he's speaking a long time to? They might've gone to the Goddess Tower. That'd give them reason to not be here in the main floor.โ
Leif presumes Seliph, in Leif's straitlaced image of him, would never break a rule. Ares on the other hand...
โI can go check if he's outside later. If I run into him, I'll let him know you're looking for him,โ Leif offers as he takes the tulip his cousin offers him. โAnd thank you for your support as always, Lord Seliph!!โ
Sir Finn said he hasn't seen Ares at all. Leif says much the same, but all Seliph needs is the confirmation that their annual competition for most charms โ well, flowers โ is still on. At the prince's speculation regarding their friend's whereabouts, the king lets out a tiny "hm" noise.
The Goddess Tower.... Although Seliph hasn't had a reason to sneak in there, he has been at the academy long enough to be aware of the 'tradition' among students. Haven't there been whispers of a famous love story?
Ares is disciplined and doesn't entertain nonsense, so he doesn't immediately strike Seliph as the type to break into the Tower for the fun of it. On the other hand, maybe it isn't so impossible to consider? He did see Lene before the lights went out...
"Any time," he nods with a warm smile. "If you do see him, I appreciate it โ and even if you don't, don't worry too much about it." The smile grows around the edges. "I think he might just have to go without my support this year."
With a wave over his shoulder, he parts ways with Leif and follows the glow of butterflies.

ย ย ย ย A trick or two shared between sisters? Interest piqued, Leif hangs on her every word, suddenly eager, only to realize he's set himself up for a false expectation. When she'd said that she had something to clean the stain, he'd assumed she'd be able to do it then and there...
But that would be too good to be true, wouldn't it? Even with the boasts in techno-magical advancements at this ball, that didn't necessarily mean everything had advanced. Cleaning techniques still took time, of course...
But he still feels quite bashful to have thought otherwise even for a second. Enough to make his ears go a bit red. However, he still listens to the rest of Minerva's offer, newly intrigued.
โAlright. I'll leave my jacket to you and Maria,โ he hands his coat to her, placing his trust with her too. โI can't say I've heard about this new cafรฉ of yours though. Is it in town?โ
Well, if he hadn't heard it before, he's sure he'll hear even more whether it be from Minerva's own lips or someone else's. News tends to travel fast in Garreg Mach after all.
โIf I'm going, you can hand my jacket back to me at the cafรฉ. Will that be enough time for you and Maria to take care of it??โ
Despite seemingly a bit reluctant at first โ or at least, the curious expression he made let Minerva thought that he wasnโt quite willing to accept her help โ, the young man eventually agreed with the Macedon princess, letting her sigh a little, as she was truly relieved to be able to make up for her stupid mistake; she was the type of person who didnโt like to be put in such situation, but since it was Leif, she would make great effort to adjust the mistake and make the jacket candid and clen once again.
โIโll make sure that your jacket will come back to you perfectly stainlessโ she nodded at the agreement, adding few more information about the aforementioned cafรฉ, โShould be pretty close to the monastery, yesโ and she quickly explained the indication to reach it, even though she as well still hasnโt been there yet. It was out of curiosity that she chose that place, or perhaps something more?
โWe'll meet there and I wonโt let you down on this" and she hinted at the jacket, proud to be able to be truly helpful, for once. "Itโs a promiseโ and she bowed her head in sign of respect, sketching a brief smile before leaving. I wonder if he would like a place like thisโฆ
ย ย ย ย Leif nods at everything Caeldori says, following her with each line of thought she offers as she seems to grapple with and figure things out herself too.
โFauntleroy would be good in a real battle though,โ Leif wryly concedes, looking back over the event that had taken him out. โBut... I still would have liked to fight you fully without him.โ
Maybe it's redundant to state, but he presses it anyway. When he does, the lightness in his tone returns, dissipating the storm that thinking on his defeat inspired just moments ago.
โSo I'm glad to hear you say all this. You'll meet me in the training grounds sometime and give me what we couldn't have today, won't you, Caeldori??โ he asks, feeling more confident now to plainly request it.
IT TAKES EVERY OUNCE OF GENTILITYใ๐ฃฒใher upbringing's taught her to not let the doubt show plain as day on her face.โ (โ and even then, it slips through ; for all her aspired perfections, she's never been a very adept liar, and that's something she's not sure she'll ever master no matter how she tries.โ )โ fauntleroy, good for anything? well, fine, maybe she's being a little hard on him there. she just can't imagine how anyone who'd show up late to the biggest tournament exam of the year, still stuffing breakfast in his mouthโโwithout even the sense of digilence to skip it to make up for his tardiness even a little bit!โโwould be anything but a liability.
but maybe leif has a more far-sighted eye for strategy than her. . . fauntleroy's lateness could've been seen as a coup de grace from the gods that helped them win the battle, an appearance that'd caught their enemies off guard. . .
she sighs, properly chastised. he's right. she should learn more from his way of thinking.
which is why his sudden request takes her off guard. "huh? you want. . . to train? with me?" . . . sure, that's fine.
or, no. . . she thinks about it againโโit's more than fine. as her heart buoys for some reason she can't place right that second, she breaks into an unexpected smile, voice accelerating into zealous enthusiasm. "of course! i'm so glad you asked. let's do it as soon as we get back to the academy. in fact, i'll spend double time practicing all my best techniques until then so you get the full experience!"
and she's so animated by the idea that she leaves to go do just that before he can protest or get another word in edgewise, thoughts full of the impending training session and the promise of a sparring partner who was just as excited as she was.

can you tag things including fortunes weave characters as spoilers please ๐
sure thing! i went back to update the post in question. for now, i'm using a similar system for how i tag spoilers for most fire emblem games, so fortune's weave content will be tagged by me with #fe18 spoilers --- (you can just block the first part without the hyphens, the hyphens are solely used as a way to avoid it being used as an actual organization tag, but this way it allows people to still blacklist as normal). but i imagine once we get closer to the actual release and muses from that game hit the dash, we'll have a group-wide tag to use, which i'll switch over to using at that point in time.โ โ โ โ

โLord Leif is already 15 years old. He is old enough to make his own decisions.โ
โโ FE5, Chapter 1: The Warrior of Fiana (Pre-Battle Scene)โ โ โ
One of the first lines the player will read in FE5 will be the above text, and it'll serve as an opener to one important lesson in the game: you have the freedom to make choices, but you must accept the consequences that comes with that freedom too.
Whilst I wouldn't claim FE5 to be as varied in its wider reaching endings like FE14 or FE16 (as decided by route splits), I do think that in spite of the fact it is fated to always end the same way for its greater narrative, the player is given a surprising amount of reaction to smaller actions they may take along the way to that. This manifests in the very tangible feeling of choosing to capture an enemy as opposed to killing them, granting you their weaponry and items said foe was carrying on them as a sort of reward for doing so that affects how you approach future combat, but this kind of live reaction is also accounted for in other ways too.
For example, every single enemy with a unique portrait in the game has unique dialogue for if they're killed versus if they're captured and then released. That's an immediate reaction. But then you can also gain access to a Paralogue later on if and only if you had gotten some of your own allies captured or left them behind in your escape previously, as Leif will make a stop when he's in the area of the prison they're all held in to try and rescue them, remembering his negligence to them prior.
It's not just enemies and allies but it's also NPCs too. Rescuing children is a repeated optional objective in early-game missions, and their relatives in later chapters will either be friendly or vitriolic/mournful to you upon attempting to speak with them depending upon whether or not you decided to save their kin. Here's a few examples:
Hicks: Hey, I was waiting for you guys. I heard you saved Mafy, my son. Thanks to you, I was able to hide him in safe place, along with the other children. I'm Hicks, an Axe Knight of Munster. I was thinking it was about time to teach that Raydrik a lesson. I'll fight alongside you.
โโ FE5, Chapter 6: The Escape (Visiting Homes, Mafy was saved in CH4x, Recruiting Hicks)โ โ
Hicks: Get out of my house! You call yourself the Liberation Army, when you can't even save one kid? You people sicken me!
โโ FE5, Chapter 6: The Escape (Visiting Homes, Mafy wasn't saved in CH4x)โ โ
Woman: I heard you saved my little sister, Bella. We're poor, so we can't give you anything much, but please take this Holy Water as a symbol of my gratitude.
โโ FE5, Chapter 6: The Escape (Visiting Homes, Bella was saved in CH4x)โ โ
Woman: Bella... she's gone forever... And I know you people can't do anything...
โโ FE5, Chapter 6: The Escape (Visiting Homes, Bella wasn't saved in CH4x)โ โ
Man: Hey, it's you guys! Thanks for rescuing my younger sister, Leena! Here, I'll give this. I found it in my backyard the other day. It looks like a page torn out of a book or something. I hope it'll be of some use to you!
โโ FE5, Chapter 6: The Escape (Visiting Homes, Leena was saved in CH4x)โ โ
Man: Ha, you call yourself the Liberation Army, huh? Well, my little sister's still captured! Don't go around acting like a hero when you can't do shit!
โโ FE5, Chapter 6: The Escape (Visiting Homes, Leena wasn't saved in CH4x)โ โ
The domino effect being a couple chapters later, in my opinion, makes it feel a lot more impactful in feeling like your actions will have an effect later on. An immediate effect can easily make it feel like just an isolated event, but the delayed effect feels more like a lesson to keep in mind that the way you choose to act can and will be judged later. There's no actual reputation system in FE5, but the villagers in Chapter 6 give a pretty good illusion of there being one, rewarding or punishing you as relevant. They are but one instance where FE5 makes you feel like you have the ability to affect digital lives, that you affect a world and not just objectives in a game.
In a game that's fated to end one way, you feel not necessarily powerful but instead that you do have some power.
This is a philosophy that carries throughout. I could speak for hours on this, but you saw the title of this meta. You saw the graphic at the top. You're wondering what this has to do with Nanna and Miranda.
Let's get to it.
So, for those who aren't aware, in FE5, Leif has a primary love interest in Nanna. But also at the end of FE5, if you recruited Miranda, you get this scene in the epilogue where Miranda proposes to Leif.
Miranda: Well, yes, but... The people want more than [my safety]. My advisors are urging me to marry you so that we can unite with Leonster. They think they can just tell me what to do because I'm a girl...
Leif: Well, you and I are the only heirs that survived this turmoil. What your advisors are saying only makes sense. But I'm not sure...
Miranda: Do you not like me? That's okay, but...
Leif: No, that's not it. I still have things to do. We still have the Grannvale Empire and other divisions of the Loptr Church to deal with, and we also have to defend Northern Thracia from invaders. There's just too much on my mind to be thinking about whether I love someone or not...
Miranda: ...... Very well, I shall be waiting for your return at Ulster. But, don't expect to win my hand until you do everything you intend to accomplish! Understood, Prince Leif?
โโ FE5, Epilogue (Miranda is alive)โ โ โ
Shortly after this conversation, Leif has another conversation where he meets up with Nanna and insinuates that he's proposing. This is in spite of his claim mere minutes prior to Miranda, in confidence, that he has no time nor space to consider love. This is a proposal implicitly built on him having romantic feelings for Nanna.
Leif: Thank you, Nanna... I was able to come this far thanks to you.
Nanna: No... I haven't done anything...
Leif: Yes, you did. We grew up like brother and sister, but you were always the one helping me. I was able to come this far because you were always there for me, to support me and cheer me up. Nanna, once this war ends, I'll go look for [your mother,] Lachesis as well. And when I find her, I'm going to ask her directly... for your hand, Nanna...
Nanna: ! ...Leif...
Leif: Our fight is still far from over... But you'll come with me, right, Nanna?โ โ
โโ FE5, Epilogue (Nanna is alive)โ โ โ
So what gives? Why does this matter with all the things I said in the first section of this meta?
This series of events is FASCINATING to me when we look back at the idea of player-attributed power and consequence that FE5 has consistently exercised up until now. Leif is the player character, so the power of the player and the power of Leif are intertwined, which is critical for any further discussion.
If Leif has power and Leif is in love with Nanna, why doesn't he just tell Miranda so when she asks him so? To basically most first-time players, this scene paints Leif in a duplicitous nature, and I don't disagree. He is, by all accounts, lying to Miranda based on the evidence we are given. But why show this? Why paint Leif like this in almost back-to-back scenes?
It's because it's a display of how Leif doesn't have powerโ not in any way that matters to him.
Let's look at the way he and Miranda specifically handle their own conversation. They both speak not of their own autonomy but instead the situation around them. Miranda uses the pretense of being badgered into it by external forces. Leif validates the logic Miranda's advisors uses, giving credence to why a political marriage between him and her would be a good decision. And when Miranda dares to probe into something more personal at lastโ does Leif not love her?โ Leif can't bring himself to answer personally back. He keeps the conversation locked onto the climate of what's going on around them and pushes off giving her an answer, not wishing to offend her.
And when we think about their positions and everything that led up to this, this makes further sense. Miranda's family kept Leif safe in his earliest years as a fugitive prince and her father, Ulster's king, died to this end. Leif failed to personally see through his promise to Miranda to liberate her kingdom for her, relying upon his cousin Seliph to do so. In so many ways, Leif owes heavy debts to Miranda (and her line), something the game builds from the first moment he reunites with her and keeps reminding, making it more and more clear not only the fact he feels responsible for how he's wronged her and what he owes her but also how *strongly* he feels about it.
Miranda: You didn't recognize me? Well, I'm not surprised. I look like a complete wreck. But this is all your fault, Prince Leif!โ โ
Leif: My fault? Why?โ
Miranda: It all started when you fled from Leonster. My father was a kind man who loved peace. He had no reason to go against the Empire... But...but...! Just because he hid you, we were caught by the Empire and attacked! My father was forced to turn me over as a hostage and lost his right to his throne... he died a miserable death. I will never forgive you, Prince! If only you hadn't come to Ulster...this never would have happened...โ โ
Leif: ...... โ โ
[...] โ โ โ
Leif: I'm sorry, Princess Miranda... Forgive me. I never knew you were held prisoner in a place like this... I should have come more quickly. โ โ
โโ FE5, Chapter 16B: The Dark Forest (Visiting the Monastery, Recruiting Miranda)โ โ
Miranda: Prince Leif! I'm sorry to interrupt, but what about our promise?โ โ โ
Leif: Don't worry, I haven't forgotten. I will liberate Ulster. โ โ
โโ FE5, Chapter 18: The Liberation of Leonster (Post-Battle Scene, Miranda is alive)โ โ
Leif: Then you're both telling me to sit here and watch the people of Ulster die!? Ulster sheltered me after I escaped from Leonster and had nowhere else to go. My father would never forgive me if I abandoned my benefactors in the face of danger! If you still refuse to go, then I'll go alone. You two can stay here and wait! โ โ
โโ FE5, Chapter 18: The Liberation of Leonster (Post-Battle Scene)โ โ
This is to the point of him throwing an emotional fit over being deprived of his chance to try and make it up to Miranda. This promise to liberate Ulster for her is his shot at redemption.
So when Leif fails at it, when Seliph does that promise for him, Leif still has that guilt and responsibility but with no place for it to goโ not until Miranda offers him that proposal of marriage. In an instant, he's handed a second chance. This is a way to help rebuild Ulster, what Miranda wanted him to save, by lending her the support of his house and all of what being Prince Leif of Leonster means.
But it's not what Leif wants because Leif does not love Miranda. Leif has to make a choice between whether his role as prince matters more or if his personal feelings do. This is rough in a game where one of the most important things Leif has been told to contemplate is what role he serves to others and for what reason others fight to let him continue to exist.
August: What I'm saying is that Lord Seliph didn't earn his fame on his own. The times require a hero, and someone is setting him up to be one. Heroes aren't born, Lord Leif. They are made.โ โ โ
Leif: Does that mean I was made by you?โ โ
August: Think what you will. ...But I will say this. Count Dryas lost his arm to protect you in the past. And now he has lost his life to save yours. Why did this happen? Why are you being kept alive to that extent? Why are you being called a hero at all? Think about that, Lord Leif... โ โ
โโ FE5, Chapter 19: Remorse and Retaliation (Post-Battle Scene)โ โ
Leif's role as a prince, then, should hold significant weight. He's been told as such, been serving as a beacon of hope to rally behind far before he could even rise up to raise a rebellion. This is why Leif has no room to offend Miranda. His responsibility to her personally and his responsibility as a prince (given he has argued that a marriage to her WOULD be beneficial to Leonster) will not allow him to. Even though he knows his feelings and has been set up to tell her so, he believes himself too run into a corner by circumstance to risk it and an incident of diplomatic hell. And it's continued to be suggested that he had a hard time ever telling her, ever properly turning her down, because he never DOES give her that response.
Miranda โ The Stouthearted Princess
While waiting for Leif in Ulster, Miranda fell in love with a certain knight and disappeared.โ โ
Miranda's ending card essentially tells us she STILL waited for him until she eloped and cut things off herself. The severity of the chains that bind Leif is a refreshing departure in a franchise where so many other protagonists are freely allowed to choose their lover with seemingly little to no resistance or consideration from outside factors in spite of their own noble/royal standing. Roy has a few endings where his lovers are judged for being a poor political match, but this isn't actually explored during the game, and it's always triumphed just a sentence later in those ending cards. Any potential worries about this are squashed fast within the same support conversation for the comparable lords of modern FE titles like Chrom or Alear.
No other lord in the franchise is pitted with a political marriage, a marriage of convenience, like Leif is. Love and personal freedom always triumphs, because these other lords are in some way a player stand-in, but Leif, despite also being that, actually shows us part of the struggle. Not only that, but the other party isn't written off as some background character but instead also on-screen and one of your player units! There's no distance from this, no running.
And this matters far more when we remember just how much power the game made you feel prior to this. Where so many other times, Leif could influence things more directly, where little outcomes would change, in regards to Miranda's proposal, the player, and by extension, Leif, has no choice.
There is no alternative text. Even if Nanna were to be dead by this point, Leif's conversation with Miranda about her proposal always goes the same. This is despite the fact that they'll account for Nanna's death or capture in so many different ways prior in the game like in her recruitment chapter (there are FIVE different conversations for this depending on how you perform in Chapter 5) or when you recruit her brother Diarmuid.
Nanna being alive, Nanna being deadโ neither matter. Leif can't use his love for her, even as a foreign princess, to escape Miranda's proposal. This political proposal's weight comes via contrast.
This love triangle and its stripping Leif of escape is even more interesting when we factor in what the two women symbolically represent. FE5 is a game full of dualities. Leif is exalted as a hero with a 'dyadic light', and the route split in the game is based on the conflicting ideologies and tactics of Leif's two tacticians: August and Dryas.
August is the one who looks to a new future, sees the issues with the current regime and wishes to dramatically change things. He's an excommunicated priest and represents being willing to take less than honorable means for the greater good but takes caution in his tactics, weighing survivability high.
Dryas, by contrast, is the one rooted in the past. He's a veteran knight who gave his arm to let Leif survive and seeks more than anything the reclamation of Leonster by Leif's hands as a way to bring things to the glory days. He values chivalry at the cost of survival, believing to die in a way that shows bravery and rockets morale is worth the cost of individual lives. He is a traditionalist.
And from there, Nanna and Miranda are extensions of these core themes August and Dryas brings to the table. Just like Leif had to choose between August and Dryas's counsel for how to approach a situation, his marriage choice between Nanna and Miranda becomes that echo.
Compare their death quotes:
Nanna: ...Leif... Don't...lose...โ โ
Miranda: If we could onlyโฆgo backโฆto that timeโฆ PrinceโฆLeifโฆโ โ
Nanna's death quote pushes Leif to keep going even as she takes her last breath, focused entirely on him seizing victory and with it pushing him one step closer to ending the war. Miranda meanwhile laments what could've been, wishing to be brought back to the days they spent in their childhood where things were 'better.'
Miranda and Dryas believe in a past that was robbed of them, refusing to see the imperfections. They are frustrated with the present and cope with it by clinging to days long gone. But Nanna and August see the present they dislike and do not look back, only pushing forward.
This is why Leif's promise to Miranda is so critical: it's the crux of their arc together in FE5 to further cement her association with the past. She becomes the foil to Nanna, further building upon how they both have a commonality in being women who were ripped from the comfortable lives they could have lived, both losing family because of Leif.
But Miranda resents Leif at the same time she cries over what she's lost. Nanna chooses instead to let go of her resentment.
Leif's struggle to turn down Miranda is an extension then of how he is chained by the past-- of everyone pushing Quan's dreams onto him.
Dryas: Yes. Fighting with a just heart like that is exactly what Lord Quan would have done. I hope you will keep that pride as a knight and fight fair battles from here on as well, Lord Leif.โ โ
Leif: My pride as a knight... Yes... I would never want to kill more than necessary...โ โ
โโ FE5, Chapter 10: Noel Canyon (Post-Battle Scene, Largo was Captured)โ โ
Glade: This day...has finally come... Lord Leif! Now that King Calf and King Quan are deceased, you are our only hope. Please fulfill your father's wishes!
โโ FE5, Chapter 13: The Stronghold (Leif Talks to Glade)โ โ
Finn: Yes... But, Lord Leif, Northern Thracia is now free. The people are overjoyed at our victory. They are calling out your name, saying that Thracia was saved by the son of Lord Quan.โ โ
Leif, about to be absolutely emotionally swerved: Finn, we've really been through a lot. It's thanks to you that I was able to endure the hardships and come this far. But you were always suffering more than me...you gave up everything to raise me. I really don't know how to thank you, Finn...โ โ
Finn: Lord Leif, the only nation in Northern Thracia has a male heir is Leonster. The people want you to take the throne and unite Leonster, Ulster, Connacht, and Munster under one flag. Make their wishes come true, Lord Leif. To unite Thracia into a prosperous and peaceful nation like the days of Dรกinn and Njรถrun...that is what your father always wanted, and is also what I ask of you.โ โ
โโ FE5, Epilogue (Finn is Alive)โ โ โ
But Leif's choice to marry Nanna instead is an extension of his being the figure who ends oppression everywhere, going beyond Quan's dream of just Leonster. He thinks not just of home, of his past, but the world at large.
Leif โ The Prince of Leonster
Leif led the Jugdral Liberation Wars along with Seliph. After securing Belhalla, he contiuned to travel around the continent, liberating those under oppression. โ โ โ โ
This meta was inspired by the backlash that the Miranda/Leif/Nanna love triangle gets in FE5, particularly the Miranda/Leif proposal. Whilst I once agreed with this sentiment, I've since grown to change my feelings on it. I think for this game, it's another piece that perfectly suits the overarching narrative themes, and it really blasts it out of the park in a way that feels unique to it. No other game has their lord presented with a similar predicament, so to see the mundane and mortal ways Leif is trapped in a way that complements his struggles in the battlefield feels cohesive. I wouldn't ask for an FE5 without it at this point, only one that puts more attention to setting it up.
Miranda and Nanna are as important to Leif's tale as August and Dryas are, two sides of the same coin in every way.
The healing light from Leif's spell shines down upon him once more โ he'd lost count of the number of times after the earlier barrage of brutal attacks โ and Andrei feels the last of his bruises fade, leaving a disgruntled sense of regard in his mind.
(If this is how the boy's healing spells usually go, then it's no wonder why Cranberry had taken to him with such eagerness.)
With his path to the exit clear, there should only have been one course of action, before the waiter approaches him. Andrei's fist tightens, very briefly entertaining the thought of turning his newfound skill in brutish fistfighting on the hapless service worker. Is the waiter seriously asking for payment for something he never got to enjoy because of the outrageous display of uncontrolled violence in their own establishment?
He decides to summarily ignore the waiter instead after a few seconds' pause, though, instead turning his attention back onto Leif, still lagging a few steps behind after being in the thick of the fray earlier.
"Hurry, boy!" he growls out.
At some point in the future, Andrei would wonder at exactly what moment this fully became a two-person operation, rather than him attempting to leave without any consideration for the spawn of Ethlyn or his assistance. That moment is not now, however, and he makes an impatient noise towards Leif's direction, even as his wary gaze remains upon the fast-approaching enemies.
ย ย ย ย It's hard to get a read on Andrei in the heat of this makeshift battlefield, owed partly to the chaos and partly due to how little Leif knew him in normal circumstances too. But regardless of if Andrei had the intention to pay, the two of them seemed to have some shared sense of urgency to make to leave anyway.
They could just... figure out how to deal with payment at the door, surely?? Or maybe this would just be a crime on their handsโ would either intensely mind something at this petty a scale?
Leif 8/10HP moves 3 Down, 2 Right and Waits.
โComing!!โ he calls back to Yngvi's past successor, darting towards the outer wall and away from the other patrons and staff. โThat big grappler's right behind you though!!โ
