Increase is a Yang line in Modesty, everyday increasing our Modesty, for Modesty is like a treasure that keeps accumulating and in our actions and speech and attitude of everyday we add to that treasure, by remaining correct and steadfast at all times

Likewise Dedication is a Yang line in Modesty, Dedication increases Dedication and it has no fixed boundary or limit, likewise for Modesty Dedication is a treasure that keeps accumulating, indeed it doesn’t stop when we have accomplished something rather it is a treasure of which we can spend to accomplish other things

Be mindful that Modesty and Dedication are not things, they are not even an attitude they are a way of being, when we are modest we increase our Modesty, when we are dedicated we increase our Dedication, these are great values to possess in life

Lack of Modesty is a sure way to being shunned and from lack of Dedication nothing can be accomplished

How is it that in Hexagram 41 Diminishing both Stewardship and Clarity are Yin lines that require no Diminishing and in Hexagram 42 Increase we find them to be Yin lines that do not require Increase, because these judgments are one and the same, no Diminishing requires no Increase

Stewardship and Clarity require no Diminishing and no Increase, they are equal to themselves and cannot be diminished or added to while remaining the same, there are things as lack of Stewardship and lack of Clarity, and there are such things as too much Stewardship and too much Clarity

Either we are Stewards of ourselves and of others, and exercise Clarity in our actions and speech and attitude or not at all, without Diminishing that fails our effort and without unnecessary increase that overdo our effort, but in balance

Likewise Increase is a Yin line in Purpose, Purpose requires no Increase, either we do things with Purpose or not at all, be mindful that too much Purpose can be interpreted as wanting to be seen which is not a good thing, we must not be remarked for our Purpose to do things but rather we should strive diligently so that in the end people say this is what he has accomplished, and that should be equal to us whether it comes to our ears or not at all

Increase is a Yang line in Discipline, Discipline requires Increase of that which furthers Discipline same as it requires Decrease of that which is an impediment to it

Diminishing is a Yang line in Modesty, Modesty requires Diminishing, of that which is an impediment to Modesty, how then do we reach Modesty, by Diminishing that which is an impediment to Modesty, and they are many, and they are felt by men of understanding for not being modest is akin to trespassing for those of understanding, what is being modest what is contrariwise to that, one should not ignore the situation and dismiss it, that is neglectful and reproachable towards oneself and towards others

To do things willingly and blame oneself afterwards that is not the correct attitude to have, rather the correct attitude is doing no wrong

No Diminishing in Dedication, in Stewardship and in Clarity, those are things that do not bear Diminishing, neither is adding to Dedication, to Stewardship and to Clarity necessary rather what is important is being Dedicated, being a Stewart of oneself and others and exercising Clarity, and all things will follow suit

Diminishing is a Yang line in Purpose, Purpose requires Diminishing, that is the Diminishing of our selfish motives to put the task and its completion before ourselves

Likewise for Discipline Diminishing is a Yang line, Discipline requires Diminishing of that which is an impediment to Discipline, how then do we reach Discipline by Diminishing that which is an impediment to Discipline

However clear are these guiding lines and judgments on these matters by the Yi King, nothing can be reached or accomplished in these matters except by an everyday work

That requires an introspection at every moment of our actions and speech and attitude, and judging them on the scale of what is sound and correct and what is not

To be found lacking at one time is to be found lacking at all times, many will remember the correct actions and speech and attitude, but many more will remember what is beneath it

Indeed the accomplished student of the Yi King is not whom knows it by heart, but the one that follows its judgments in everyday life, not at some time, not when it is convenient, but at all times and most essentially when it is the most difficult to do

The good man reproaches himself before others do, the wise man knows how to spare himself that, the lesser man is blamed even by rocks and trees

Many are the things that can be accomplished by Diminishing, by Diminishing that which is blameworthy we reach that which is good and sound

No Untangling in Modesty, Untangling in Modesty is a Yin line, a receiving line, and we can never untangle ourselves from Modesty while remaining modest, indeed the person that is truly modest never lets Modesty on the side to be otherwise, nor does that person consider Modesty as a burden heavy to bear. The person that is truly modest is the one untangled with Modesty as a way of being and as a the reflection of the true nature of his self and his handling of himself, not on occasions, not when it is fit or self serving but at all times and in every occasion, then we can say that that person is modest that it is not an appearance or a disguise

Can we set aside Dedication and say that we are a dedicated person, likewise with Modesty Untangling is a Yin line in Dedication, we can never untangle ourselves from Dedication and say that we are dedicated, a person that is dedicated when it fits its purpose and not dedicated at other times is not only careless, it is reproachable and neglectful for when we know the value of Dedication we can never disregard it under any circumstance, and when we are dedicated only at times others will find words to describe the situation and the words are this person is only self serving and childish, and cannot be relied on for anything serious that is going to require Dedication, because Dedication is not born out of anything else but abnegation, to put the task before ourselves 

Untangling is a Yang line in Stewardship, Stewardship requires Untangling, the Untangling of our lower selves and selfish motives for the greater good, we cannot steward others while being selfish or even resentful of their progress, they might someday become more skilled at something than we are should we say stop I am not going to steward that person because of this or because of that, rather Stewardship requires the Untangling of these things, which are not worthy to consider, above all of selfishness and envy, is to steward others fully and to receive the great gift of their success which is also ours. That is why the judgment on Untangling in Stewardship is that it is necessary to Untangle ourselves from the negative aspects of ourselves to succeed at Stewardship

Untangling is a Yin line in Clarity, no Untangling in Clarity, either we are clear or not at all for those who know how to exercise their judgment, we cannot be almost clear that is we are disguising things and hiding something which is even worse than lying altogether, because often the motives of lies is fear, whereas the motive of deceit is much graver

This is why there is no Untangling in Clarity likewise with Modesty and Dedication Clarity is more than attitude, it is a way of being, not at times but at all times, how do we avoid being reproached to by avoiding reproachable things, Clarity requires us to be irreproachable for we cannot exercise Clarity while having things to hide from others, where is the Clarity in that, much worse is abusing of others good faith to make them believe that we are irreproachable when we are not, Clarity is sure to shed light upon that situation in due time, how do we act towards Clarity, by exercising Clarity in ourselves towards ourselves, in our words and intentions and acts towards others, then we can say that we have reached Clarity when our words and our intentions and acts are in no manner reproachable

Untangling is a Yang line in Purpose, Purpose requires Untangling, because there is the right purpose and the wrong purpose, how do we Untangle the situation towards Purpose by exercising judgment, many are the things that arise from a lack of judgment, and many are the things that are avoided by exercising judgment, Untangling in Purpose has to be weighted upon through sound judgment, is to untangle what is good from what is bad, what is worthwhile from that which has no value, things that are done in good Purpose benefit oneself and others, things that are done with bad Purpose harm oneself and others, lack of Purpose is equal to bad Purpose, Doing things with Purpose while exercising sound judgment no reproach can arise from that, be mindful that reproach is first felt towards oneself that is if you are on the correct path, to do things with bad purpose or lack thereof and wait to be reproached by others is the way either of fools or of idiots, if you are not sure that is the right thing to do, do nothing at all

Hexagram 39 carries a judgment about how we can overcome Obstruction, Obstruction in Dedication and in Clarity can be overcome

How, by Being receivers of Modesty, Stewardship, Purpose and Discipline

By being receivers of Modesty, Stewardship, Purpose and Discipline within ourselves, Obstruction in Dedication and in Clarity can be overcome, because we are being Modest and there is no Obstruction in Modesty to the contrary Modesty removes Obstruction, because we are being Stewards of ourselves and of others and there is no Obstruction in Stewardship rather Stewardship removes Obstruction, by acting and speaking with Purpose we remove Obstruction because Obstruction stems from lack of Purpose, by acting with Discipline towards ourselves and towards others we remove Obstruction because Discipline furthers one’s effort to the point where Obstruction itself is removed

Having done all this we can overcome Obstruction in Dedication, because no one can never tell that by being Modest, Stewards of ourselves and others, by acting and speaking with Purpose and by being Disciplined and accomplishing things with Discipline that our attitude lacks Dedication, to the contrary only a dedicated person can achieve all this

Having achieved these things we receive the light of Clarity within ourselves and towards others

How is so and so, he is modest, a steward of himself and of others, he acts and speaks with purpose and is disciplined in his life and in his work

His attitude and his actions are clear, and he is dedicated to achieving success in life and in his work

These things can neither be granted nor taken away that is why Obstruction is a Yang line in Dedication and a Yang line in Clarity, the obstacles to Dedication and Clarity need to be removed through hard work, how

By being modest, a steward of oneself and of others, by acting and speaking with purpose and discipline

So that all is clear for everyone to see, and so that Clarity and Dedication are not only a judgment bestowed from others but indeed something that we carry within ourselves

Dedication and Clarity are the highest values we can aspire to in life and in work, why

Modesty requires Dedication and Clarity, no Modesty can be achieved without Dedication and Clarity

Stewardship requires Dedication and Clarity, no Stewardship can be achieved without Dedication and Clarity

Purpose requires Dedication and Clarity, no Purpose can be achieved without Dedication and Clarity

Discipline requires Dedication and Clarity, no Discipline can be achieved without Dedication and Clarity

So while we consider these important facts we should also consider that Dedication and Clarity are Yang lines in Hexagram 39 Obstruction

We have to be givers of Dedication and Clarity no matter the Obstruction we are facing, we have to be what, givers of Dedication and Clarity no matter the Obstruction we are facing

The greater the Obstruction is the greater the Dedication and Clarity that are needed to see things through

Clarity sheds light on the Obstruction and gives it clear form and shape so that we fully comprehend what it is, and Dedication yields the necessary perseverance we need to overcome it

Often an Obstruction what is it, something that we do not fully comprehend, rather then staying struck in that Obstruction it is necessary to accomplish the work of understanding it fully which holds in itself the answers and elements that we need to make it a thing of the past

Opposition in Modesty is a Yang line, and truly Modesty stems out of opposition, the opposition to our lower selves, to our ego, and to all the negative aspects of boasting and arrogance. Modesty is not an easy value to acquire, how we acquire it through opposition to the negative aspects of ourselves, and facing the negative aspects that can result from any given situation. As we oppose this negativity we are rewarded with Modesty which is not an humility devoid of grounds, Modesty stems from self control, self confidence and assurance

It is a Yang line also in the sense that we have to be givers of Modesty, Modesty is not something we can receive while lacking it in ourselves

Nor should we keep spending the great treasure that is Modesty on those who are not worthy of it, it is also why Modesty is a Yang line in Opposition, there is that limit in being Modest that is how Modesty is being met

Opposition in Dedication is a Yin line, no opposition in dedication is a great treasure to have, as Dedication can lead us to achieve the most daunting tasks, which they are many the things that Hanso wants to achieve as a corporation and it stems from Dedication, surely nothing can be achieved without Dedication and surely everything can be achieved through it, that is why in Dedication we must not make any Opposition but rather gives ourselves fully to the tasks at hand, being fully dedicated to our work, and our careers at Hanso, is to see success at the end of the line

Dedication is never lost and that is why it is a Yin line, a receiving line without Opposition, Dedication is something that not only we receive in ourselves towards ourselves, but in receiving it and in expressing in it in our daily actions and speech we can receive it from other and that is why it is a great treasure that it is never spent, but keeps on accumulating

Opposition in Stewardship carries a lot of meaning, Stewardship is a Yang line, we have to be givers of Stewardship, yet we can only steward those who want to be stewarded that is why the Yi King advises us about not wasting efforts on those who do not want to follow the right course, similarly another great proverb says that we can lead a horse to the water but we cannot make him drink

And that is why Stewardship is a Yang line in Opposition, we can lead only those who are willing to follow

When you have had the correct attitude, the correct speech and the correct dedication if your stewardship is not being received carry on by focusing on those who receive it with whom you can achieve great things, and do not waste your time and efforts on those who are contrariwise because they have not worked on themselves and are still caught in the web of their ego, their selfishness, arrogance or laziness or all these things together

Opposition is a Yin line in Clarity, and truly Opposition is the opposite of Clarity, Opposition in being clear in our actions and speech, Opposition in the sense of concealing our actions and intentions, where that attitude can last only so long before it is found out, and with it the loss of others confidence and trust, that is why in Clarity Opposition is a Yin line, it is something that is opposite to Clarity that diminishes it, sometimes often to the point of splitting it appart altogether and we should contemplate the result of that, darkness of thought of speech of intentions of motives, nothing of which is desirable in work and in life

To become an obscure character with things to hide is contrariwise to the Tao which expresses itself only in clarity

Nothing good can be achieved from Opposition in Clarity, nothing of value and nothing that withstands the test of time

The Yi King is telling us rather that Opposition should be met with Clarity so that if we stand opposite to a decision, to a project, to a nomination, we should clearly express why with reasons that are soundly motivated and in broad daylight for all to see, and not as an obscure troublemaker who’s motives are selfish, who’s intentions are blameworthy and who’s actions can only be concealed to others because they are a source of shunning and reproach

Opposition is a Yang line in Purpose, likewise with Stewardship Purpose is something that we receive within our own selves and towards our own selves

And in receiving it we can express it that is why Purpose is a Yang line it is something that emanates from within to without, and we can inspire others with the same sense of Purpose and great formidable things can be achieved together

However if Purpose is absent in someone we can only try to revive it but we shouldn’t stay stuck in our efforts or project or work because this person or that person is lacking in Purpose. Without Purpose nothing can be accomplished that is why Opposition is a Yang line in Purpose, if Purpose is met with Purpose make the most of it, if Purpose is met with the lack thereof carry on diligently with those who are willing to accomplish

There is that duality of values when they are a Yang line, meaning they are something that we express and emanate, always keep in mind that in order to express something and emanate it, it has to be there within ourselves, we have first of all to receive that value within ourselves so that we can express it and emanate it and others can benefit from it

Opposition is a Yang line in Discipline, likewise for Modesty Discipline stems from fighting our own lower self, it is exactly the same thing, and it is also the same as Stewardship and Purpose, we can only inspire Discipline by being disciplined ourselves, and only those who are ready to receive Discipline will follow suit, it is useless to spend Discipline on those who are not willing to receive it, it is a waste of time and efforts, rather those who do not want to receive Discipline and act in a disciplined manner where it is what is required are only dooming themselves to fail, it is a good thing indeed if they realize their lacking and that failing at something is an avenue at failing at other things because in the end success is an attitude in life, and no success is achievable without Discipline

Hexagram 37 is named 家人 (jiā rén), "Dwelling People". Other variations include "the family (the clan)" and "family members". Its inner trigram is ☲ (離 lí) radiance = (火) fire, and its outer trigram is ☴ (巽 xùn) ground = (風) wind.

Family or Clan is a very important Hexagram, it occupies the core of what we are trying to achieve at Hanso, which is to be more than a corporation a closely tied group of employees and executives no different in that regard to a family or a clan

We have live in offices and we have seasonal retreats where we train, and everyone is a practitioner of martial arts so there also group lessons, it is all done so that we achieve the notion of family or clan to its fullest, and so that each member of that clan feels towards it that he or she belongs to a greater ensemble, a meaningful ensemble and so that dedication and loyalty to Hanso not only as a corporation but as much more follows suit

In Hexagram 37, The Family we have Modesty that is a Yang line, meaning we have to be givers of Modesty and true that in a Family or a Clan nothing of value can be obtained by being haughty and arrogant, rather by being humble and modest we can make people yield to us and with that yielding towards Modesty, what follows is the yielding of the affairs, business and also opinions these people are entrusted with

Through Modesty we can inspire and through arrogance and haughtiness we can only shun, that much is correct for a family or a clan and at Hanso as a corporation and that is why Modesty is one of our 6 core values

Line 2, Dedication is likewise a Yang line, in a family or a clan and at Hanso whether you are a seasoned senior executive or a junior employee that has just joined the corporation Dedication is expected of each one of us in exactly the same way, we have to be dedicated towards the family and the clan that we are striving to make of Hanso, and that Dedication is not something that we give at time and that is absent at time, same as Modesty Dedication has to be with us all the time, same a Modesty Dedication has to fuel our efforts and nurture our attitude in life and at work

Stewardship is a Yin line, in the family and the clan that we are striving to make of Hanso we are the receivers of the Stewardship that emanates from the top and that has to go all the way to the junior employees same as the streams of mountains form rivers and great lakes, my hope is that you will find Stewardship in this work that I have accomplished for you so that you fully understand the different matters at hand as an employee of Hanso, and know that this work was conducted through Stewardship, through Stewardship great things can be accomplished together, it is something that we give and that we receive thus the family and the clan where all its members are at times givers and at times receivers

For in order to be receivers of Stewardship someone as to give it, and in times of difficulty and duress you have to step out of your comfort zone as a receiver and become a giver of Stewardship because that is what gives sense to the family or clan and at Hanso, the ability and strength to step up to the challenge, and the Modesty and Dedication to carry on with what with Stewardship

Purpose is a Yin line, in the family and the clan that we are striving to make of Hanso we are the receivers of the Purpose of the corporation and of its affairs, because all meaningful things are done with Purpose, as an employee of Hanso you should always keep in your mind that there is a Purpose that leads the corporation forward, that Hanso wants to accomplish meaningful things in life and in the world, how through Purpose and so you have to both receive and embrace the Purpose of the corporation

The Purpose of Hanso is made clear in its action and words, seek that Purpose for yourself and strive to be meaningful and useful to it
