Hello! We are an adaptive system of 40+ headmates! All of us share this blog together. You may know us from our old (obsolete) blogs, @dhundertale and @droughtale. This is our rebranded blog, with our rebooted series.
This page features two Undertale AUs, both of which take place in the same universe, just with slightly different circumstances. The descriptions of these AUs are lower down, if you wish to read a brief summary.
The first two pages of Defining Happiness are here.
Both AUs contain the same ships, so be warned and turn away if you do not like them. You will be blocked if you reblog or comment just to complain about the romances/QPRs.
Any of the ships listed that have more than two people are polyamory/ethical non-monogamy, not "love triangles".

Chara and Frisk both use they/them in this AU. Napstablook uses they/them. MK uses both they/them and he/him. Mad Mew Mew (Maddie) uses she/her. Please respect that.

Also, in these two AUs, Flowey and Asriel are headmates, not the same person. They have shared memories (and a shared body/soul), but they are separate boys with their own thoughts and feelings.

Defining Happiness/DH (Summary)
A fancomic series about our protagonists Frisk & Chara and their loved ones attempting to find freedom on the surface, and facing hardships of forming a lasting family. The story is told by Frisk of the future, passing the tale onto their niblings (nieces, nephews, niephews) and little siblings.
Follow Frisk as they study and fight to become the young ambassador for Monsterkind, join forces with the previously-hidden MHHR Association (Monster, Hybrid, Human Rights Association), battle the traumas formed by their past, face teenage development and romance, and struggle to maintain a relationship with their older sister, Celest.

Drought & Devastation/Droughtale/DD (Summary)
A fanfiction series about our protagonists Celest & Michael, attempting to journey through a decaying underground, with the soul of Celest's sister (Frisk). While Celest is the older sister in Defining Happiness, in Droughtale Celest is aged down, becoming Frisk's younger sister instead.
(TW for physical abuse & cannibalism)
When Frisk (age 13) fell into the mountain, they rushed to get through the underground, to return home to their little sister Celest (age 9) and care for her, as the two of them lived with abusive parents. Frisk managed to complete a false pacifist run (leaving Asgore dead and Toriel the queen), intending to gather Celest from their home and return underground, knowing that Toriel would care for the two of them. However, upon arriving home, they failed to sneak inside and take Celest without notice. Their father caught them and began to beat them.
They attempted to reset, but found that their magic was no longer of use. (This is because human magic can only work in the presence of monster magic.) Instead, they were left with brain damage from the beating, and spent the rest of their childhood locked in the house with Celest, tending to her the best they could in their impaired state.
Upon adulthood, the two escaped together. Celest married her husband, Markson, and the two had a child Junebug (aka Frisk Junior.) Frisk passed away not long after, telling Celest to take their soul underground to free monsterkind (while being unaware that the other six souls were fully used up and lost during the fight with Omega Flowey.)
Celest traversed underground, only to find that it was no longer the wonderland Frisk had described to her, but instead a place of ruins, riddled with a magical drought that caused all monsters to have erratic, hallucinatory, and/or violent symptoms, and be thirsty for any magic - or liquid - that they could get their hands on...including the lifeforce of each other.
Through her journey to get back home to her husband and child, she seeks to discover the history of how such a magical place has come to such devastation.

Chara: That would be so cool! I didn't even know spirits existed until I became one myself! But if spirits are really that common, wouldn't they be better recorded? Wait - unless their existence has been getting covertly erased by anti-magic organizations, just like how hybrids have been getting covered up! Are you guys secret spirits who have been sneakily living amongst society? ...Wait, who the heck is Kris? Is there a second spirit around here that even I can't see?
Frisk: What do you mean by DETERMINATION? Do you mean you can see spirits if that's their main soul trait? Is YOUR main soul characteristic also DT? I thought that was super rare...
Chara: I mean, my entire tribe supposedly had partial DT souls...
Frisk: Yes, but they... probably aren't around anymore...so DT is much rarer...

Chara: Yes, I do! I love Madagascar hissing cockroaches. They are incredibly resilient, extremely difficult to kill, have incredibly tough shells, and can survive high-pressure environments! They also hiss when they feel threatened, as the name suggests, which I find to be extraordinarily endearing. And...well, I like them because...cockroaches are one of the most hated creatures on this earth. They are treated as gross, when in reality, the reason why they are in unhygienic locations is because they are there to clean it! They consume waste, they make the world less dirty! And they are regularly deemed ugly, which...I suppose I...have a sense of kinship towards them.
Chara: ...
Frisk: ...Chara-
Chara: I also like mosquitos! Did you know they are pollinators? And that their main food source is actually nectar? Only the egg-bearing mosquitos drink blood, and they do so only when they wish to reproduce, because they need the protein and iron in order to develop their eggs. Blood is not their primary food source.
Chara: And did you know that butterflies drink blood, sweat, and tears? And that Asian ladybugs bite while seeking out water and salt from sweat, which leads itchy red welts? Don't let beauty standards bias you!
Chara: ...

Frisk: It's a tie between ruby red and all shades of green! Blue and yellow are tied for fourth.
Meth: Your top two colorations are associated with the utmost popular Christopagan winter holiday! Is this an intentional association on part of your favoritism, or simply a correlation formed by a societal mindscape?
Frisk: Oh, wow, I never put those that together, but you're right! Those are the traditional Christmas colors! And blue is very winter-associated too! Now I'm going to think about that when the time of year comes around!
Chara: I love Christmas...
Alphys: Do you have a reasoning f-for those colors as your favorite?
Frisk: Green makes me think of forests, jungles, and life! Red makes me think of fire, sunsets, and autumn - which is my favorite season! And blue makes me think of water, nighttime, and Waterfall. Waterfall is a place in the Underground, and it's gorgeous! Yellow reminds me of sunlight, hope, and a lot of the flowers around here. And, well...

I thought maybe it was that only humans could see, but my sister is a human, and she never commented on it when I sent her photos that have Chara in them, so I dunno how some of you askers are capable...
A-Anyways! I figured it out because Chara kept photobombing me.
Chara: I deserved to be in those photos.
Frisk: I didn't think anything of it, but when I looked at my phone, I saw them in the pictures too! I tried to show them to MK, asking if they saw it too, but they just laughed it off as me pranking them and trying to scare them with stories of hauntings. Now he keeps trying to get me into spooky urban legends and prank scare me...they...aren't very good at it. (It's really cute.)

How much progress have humans made in terms of queer acceptance? And what role do monsters play in queer history? Especially before the war since after the war, human and monster cultures likely didn't interact much.
The monsters do seem quite accepting of diversity of any kind and you mentioned their place in queer history, so I was curious.

Frisk: When it comes to Human progress, we've come quite far! Same-gender and gender diverse relationships are legalized globally.
Meth: Polyamory is legalized in 93% of countries. And marriage benefits are no longer a thing - benefits are simply given to those who need them, instead of forcing individuals who wished not to marry into a partnership. Marriage is now what it is supposed to be - an act of affection and dedication, and sometimes a cultural exchange. Not an act of legal necessity.
Frisk: Gender and sex transitions are fully supported in healthcare, t-though there is still the issue with, y'know...classism, and some people being unable to afford HRT and surgery.
Meth: Indeed. There is also some misfortune in how binary-centric manners of thinking have yet to be completely eradicated. Though things are looking up. Gender segregation is no longer present in a majority of countries, with gendered bathrooms being widely turned gender neutral in 81% of the Human population, and sports being sorted through standards such as physical mass and level of practice rather than gender or sex within 74% of countries! And the statistics rise with each passing year!
Frisk: Most countries still have "legal gender," so many children - like me - are still being assigned female and assigned male on birth certificates. However, legal gender can be changed without a fee, and gender assignments are starting to fall out of favor.
Meth: An estimated 66% of babies born within the last year have been unassigned at birth, and around the globe, there are debates to completely rid of the F/M markers on legal documentation altogether!
Frisk: And speaking of gender assignment...mutilation, hormone abuse, and other forms of coercive intersex medical interventions have been illegalized across 98% of the globe, widely recognized as cruelty. Which was a massive step in progress, considering how horrifically normalized it was...
Chara: ...
Meth: Intersexuality is also being taught within sex education and biology to the youth.
Frisk: A-And so are other queer topics!
Meth: And it is standard in a majority of workplaces to ask for preferred pronouns and names upon hire, and to be given badges with such.
Alphys: ...
Frisk: ...

Alphys: OH THANK GOD, I-I was about to burst! There i-is so much I could say! S-So, to begin, M-Monsters have n-never had the same issues with queerness that Humans have. T-This is because of our d-differences in biology. All Monsters begin primarily sexless, a-and only when w-we hit puberty d-do our sexes become clear. The only thing y-you can tell about a Monster's sex pre-puberty is their chromosomes. A-And since Monsters don't have any identifiable sex t-traits at first, we h-have never raised our young with a-any sort of gender roles. W-We've always let them d-decide what they w-want to be called on their own.
Well, I say "never" somewhat loosely, b-because in the past, back w-when tensions were high and our communities began to fall apart, there were some Monsters w-who'd assign their infants genders in order to "fit in" among Humans, b-but this was a rare practice, and u-usually the other way around would happen - Humans l-leaving their infants unassigned, I mean.
A-Anyways! Let me not g-get off track. Um, M-Monsters also have a-a very different form of reproduction than Humans. T-This means that our relationships h-have always been different, too.
We M-Monsters didn't create gender roles, and thus, relationship roles, be-because we never found a need to. And even though Humans have different a-anatomy to us, we tried our best to show them they didn't need to have these roles, either. A-And well, back then, it w-worked! Most Humans accepted q-queerness with open arms, because...well, because they also accepted Monsters with open arms.
B-But when the war began, Humans...they wanted to find a-as many ways to separate themselves from Monsters as they c-could. And that included queerness, because they...associated it with us. Gender diversity, intersexuality, t-these things were considered "too Monsterlike" because o-of our lack of gender and sex roles. Same-gender attraction was unacceptable, because it played against the b-binary they created in opposition to us. Polyamory was unacceptable, because it was common practice in our kind - fun fact, up to five Monsters c-can have a baby together, a-and in rare cases, more than five can, too!
An-And it doesn't need to be done through sex! It can be, but it's not required. I-In fact, soulmingling doesn't r-rely on intimate relations whatsoever! Any soulminglers can reproduce together without consequences, including siblings, cousins, a-and more! An estimated 37% of monsters h-have parents who are just friends or family, and it isn't inappropriate, b-because again, sex isn't-...oops, I am rambling again, haha-...the point is that-that soulmingling doesn't have the same limitations that sexual reproduction does. A-Actually, Humans c-could practice soulmingling, too, if-if they wanted! As long a-as all souls involved are fertile, a-and at least one of the minglers has a functional uterus-

I am perisex and altersex, particularly xenosex, transxenive, xenogonadal, and prenascian! Chara: I think he might kill us if we don't let him finish.

Alphys: M-Meth! Frisk had first dibs!

*Chara floats up to the two tussling adults and does the unthinkable. They tug the camera out of Meth's hands, dropping it right into Alphys's claws. So they can interact with objects, then? Alphys immediately sprints with the camera. Meth, on the other hand, seems...frozen.
*Frisk is trying hard not to laugh.
Chara: Satisfied, princess?
Frisk: (Yes, my angel. Extremely.)
Alphys: A-Aha! You-you dropped it!
Meth: I would never release my grasp on an opportunity such as-...
Meth: ... *Frisk clears their throat.
Frisk: A-As I was saying! I would not consider myself the "savior."
Chara: You are far too modest.
Frisk: Most of that credit is owed to someone far holier than I.

Alphys: U-Um...who-who are you referring to?
Frisk: My angel...

When characters discuss their pasts, it is canon for the DH comic.
However, anything in the present or future of this ask series is an alternate timeline, and does not reflect the direction that the DH comic is headed. In the DH comic, this ask blog does not exist.
Rules!
-You are allowed limited AU shenanigans. You can have alternate versions of the UT cast send in asks, but you cannot have them physically interfere (ie; no Error Sans appearing in the lab to mess things up.) This also means you canāt have them touch our characters (ie; no Frisk-on-Frisk hugs.)
-You can send in your own/your ocs physical interaction (ie; hugs, head ruffles, etc) to the characters, but whether or not they accept is up to them. They may not consent to being touched.
-Absolutely no sexual asks to Frisk, Chara, or any other kids.
-Sexual asks are allowed for the adult characters, but nothing pornographic (ie; "Are you a virgin", "have you ever hooked up with [insert person]?" and similar questions are acceptable, but "have you ever [insert sexual act]" is not acceptable.)
-You are allowed to send simping asks to the adult characters (ie; "You're so hot"), but nothing pornographic. Suggestive asks of this nature are on thin ice (ie; "I wish we could spend some alone time together" is acceptable, but "I wish I could [insert sexual act]" is not acceptable.)
-No using the wrong pronouns. If you send in an ask with the wrong pronouns, it will not be answered.Ā
-No sending asks to characters who aren't currently present. This ask blog is centered around Meth, Frisk, Chara, and Alphys - however, occasional guests may join in. When guests are present, you may send asks to them, but you can't continue when they are no longer present.

Alphys: U-Um- who- who is the second kid you're referring to?
Chara: Oh boy...uhh... (Shit, I didn't think this far about what would happen if someone could see me...)
Frisk: (You dummy.)
Meth: So you gather children from the multiverse? And this doesn't have any negative effects on the structure of those worlds?
Frisk: Who is your papa?
Alphys: D-Did your world, uhh...collapse or some-something? Is- Is that insensitive to ask? N-Nevermind, don't answer that!
Been doodling on wiggly paint recently. I thought fire would look cool with it's shaky effect so I drew Ember.
She's a character in my friends @dh-dd-hivemind 's Undertale AU Defining Happiness.
Some other colorations I liked below the cut! (She's normally blue.)
I've made some fake screenshots of my characters Ember and Sam if they existed in Undertale. These both take place in the pacifist ending, before Frisk leaves the Underground.
Ember is a big fan of Mettaton, but never had the chance to see him or even much of his merch. She begs her big brother Sam to take her to MTT Resort before they leave the Underground for good. He complies, of course.
These interactions between them and Frisk are unfortunately not canon to DH either, as the AU follows the game to a T. The characters and the event itself very much is, though!

Frisk: Does-Does that mean you have a Celest? Celest and Stella would make sense as names together, actually...they both describe outer space!
Chara: (Why are you going along with this story???)

Chara: (They could be some random kid who dressed like you!)
Prometheus: I know you are speaking only truths, little one.
Alphys: H-How do you, uhh...know that?
*Prometheus holds up his arm, pulling down his sleeve, to reveal a machine strapped to his wrist. It has a similar appearance to a wristwatch.
Prometheus: Due to being alerted of a universal drift at the very moment they formed within this room!
Frisk: (See Chara? I told you so!)
Alphys: !!!
Chara: WOAH, you're SERIOUSLY from ANOTHER UNIVERSE? That's AWESOME!
Frisk: (Oh, NOW you act amazed!)
Chara: (Never believe things without evidence, Frisk!)
