Reflection 19: The whole idea.
I think for the past two years a lot of my classmates have been stressed out about CAS and I think in some ways I have been stressed too. We have to be creative, take action, and do our own service and sometimes between exams and sat prep and school it is pretty hard to do. But through the past two year the biggest thing I've done is create the Stand Up to Cancer Club. And although none of the ideas we had from last year happened we did manage to have success. I created the club by myself with the help of a few of my friends, check off creativity. We then did one fundraiser a year and sold pins to raise money and put in our account. (Beard-a-thon) And we decided that we wanted to donate it to a local hospitals cancer center. We found that Mount Sinai hospital in Baltimore had a great Hematology/Oncology unit and made the arrangements to donate the money collected in the two years ( around $360.00) to the unit. We were then notified that the money we donated was going to go towards art supplies that the patients use to create cards, and we were invited to the unit to visit the patients and make cards with them. I guess you could count that as action. But the most fulfilling experience was the service side. Getting a chance to visit the actual patients and make cards with them, was the best experience I've had through CAS in the past two years. I was first, tentative to meet the patients, not knowing how they would act or if they would want to make cards but it was worth a try. Michael, Valencia, and I went to visit the hospital and make cards with the cancer patients and although it seemed quite easy for Michael and Valencia to connect with certain patients I was making cards without really getting a chance to talk to the patients. Until I met Dorothy, who asked me about school and soccer and what I liked to do. She just sat and watched as I colored a piece or paper for her and after awhile it just dawned on me that these people just wanted some company. And that what they enjoyed. The head nurse was so thankful for the donation because she had been buying everything out of pocket to make the cards. She couldn't thank us enough and urged us to come back as soon as possible. But what really touched me was not the thankfulness of the nursing staff but the happiness it brought the patients that Michael, Valencia, and I met. And we were so moved we hope to continue this even after CAS ends because we also began to make emotional connections with them. They were so happy we did that for them and we were so happy that they were happy. I hope we can bring a few more people the next time and open up a good relationship with Mount Sinai and Meade so that the 11th graders and incoming IB students will have a fun and touching CAS opportunity to look forward to. I guess that this last experience really taught me to be humble and share happiness with the world. I plan to continue visiting Sinai because it gave me a satisfied feeling and also I want to make sure Dorothy makes it through, she's a fighter. And I hope that others will feel that way as well. I guess my Stand Up to Cancer Club was really worth all the stress, I got to be creative, take action, and do service, along with the rest of my projects. But this one was definitely the best.
