When Goro sends her a text with a date, time, and location, Ren spends the first minute or so squealing excitedly to Morgana about going on a date. Then she texts him back âyeah cool canât wait!!!â and promptly forwards the details to Ann, with the message âif i die, u know who did itâ attached. Ann replies with a simple thumbs up (a ritual between the two of them at this point), and then Ren is faced with the challenge of getting ready for her date.
Her date, with her absolutely incredible boyfriend, that Ren is head over heels crazy over, and no, she isnât nervous at all, why would she be nervous? Theyâve been on dozens of dates by now, so thereâs no reason for her to be nervous.
No reason at all, Ren reminds herself as she practically tears apart her closet searching for the right outfit (she settles on the soft grey sweater Ann had gifted her a few weeks earlier because it âwasnât seeing any use in my closet anyway, Ren,â with a cute black skirt. Immediately after, she scraps the entire thing. Ren isnât always meticulous with her outfitsâthatâs something reserved mainly for her shifts at Crossroads, when the dysphoria is hitting a little too hard and she needs to feel like a girl, or, as she is quickly becoming aware, dates with Goro. Finally, she decides to wear a red dress and black cropped jacket over itâjust in case it gets chilly. Or wait, maybe she should ditch the jacket, so that if she got cold Goro could offer her his? Thatâs the âromanticâ thing, right? Ren has no idea. Sheâs relying mostly on the knowledge sheâs garnered from the shitty romcoms sheâs seenâboth as a guilty pleasure and for the Phantom Thievesâ monthly movie nights.)
Right as Ren is pulling off the jacket again, deciding that itâll probably be fine if she goes without, she glances at the nearest clock, and yelps in surprise. If she doesnât leave now, sheâs going to be late, and she hasnât even attempted to do her hair or makeup yet! Well. Itâll have to be fine, she decides, smearing on the lipgloss Haru suggested she try out, patting Morgana on the head as a goodbye as she hurries out the door (her final outfit ends up being the red dress, a gold belt sheâd thrown on, a nice pair of hoop earrings (she really hopes the earrings arenât too much), and some black lace-up boots).
She sprints on the way to the station. Knowing Goro, heâll have gotten there at least 10 minutes early, and here Ren is, running late. Sheâs antsy on the ride, fidgeting with the hem on her dress, and the second the doors open, sheâs out, hurrying past passerby and yelping a few apologies behind her.
Finally, Ren makes it to the funfair, with⊠zero minutes to spare. In fact, sheâs bridging on being five minutes late, she realizes despairingly, glancing at her phone. Her eyes dart through the thick crowd, and then lock onâ
âGoro!â Ren bounces on the balls of her feet, using her height to her advantage to wave over the crowd. She cuts her way through, murmuring careful apologies to the people around her, before finally making it to her boyfriend. Before Goro can even say a word, Ren is apologizing. âIâm so sorry, I know Iâm late, I just couldnât decide on what to wear, and I lost track of time, and I know you like being punctual about things, so Iâm really sorry I made you waitââ
