What I envision for Grace is this. He would have been a normal guy if he'd stayed on earth. As a baseline, he is not a monsterfucker or an alienfucker. “No dampeners?” Adrian asked, their voice careful and steady.
“No dampeners. Your voice is soothing. I want to hear it fully.” Rocky confirmed. They had needed dampeners when they first returned to Erid. Being surrounded by so much sound after only being able to hear the Blip-A, and later, the Mary, for several hundred years was. . . disorienting.
There was a crowd at the bottom of the space-elevator ready to greet Rocky when they returned to Erid. Rocky ended up curling into themself, overwhelmed by the noise and unable to process what everyone was saying. It had been so long since they had spoken to an Eridian, and now hundreds of Eridians were talking to them.
The greeters were shooed away once it became clear that something was wrong, but even hearing Erid’s natural sounds was too much for Rocky.
The doctors recommended that Rocky wore a dampener to reduce what they heard to more manageable levels. It helped a lot, but it had been so long since Rocky and Adrian had weaved a song together. They longed to hear their mate’s voice.
Adrian had such an amazing voice. Even before they left, Rocky knew their voice was dull compared to their mate. It was a wonderful surprise when Adrian reciprocated their clumsy flirting, even agreeing to show Rocky their plan prints.
How rough was their voice now?
“Um, just a warning. I’m really rusty, 425 years, you know, so um, sorry if I sound really rough. My vocals are pretty fried after the taumoeba retrieval—which is not an excuse! Just providing some contest and. . . Adrian? What’s the matter?” Rocky was rambling, they knew that, but they couldn’t help themself. They needed to explain. They couldn’t stand the thought of disappointing their mate. At least if Rocky warned Adrian beforehand then they would be prepared when their voices clashed.
“Ah, I’m just really really happy. There was a time when I thought that I would never be able to weave with you again.” Adrian said.
“Oh!” Rocky hadn’t realized Adrian was as excited to weave together once again as they were.
“I, mm.” Adrian didn’t say anything else, instead beginning to sing. Hearing no longer obstructed by his dampener, Rocky could clearly hear the multiple choruses as Adrian sang of how happy they were. It was beautiful.
Hesitantly, Rocky leaned towards Adrian and began to weave into Adrian’s song. Their voice was rough, but Adrian didn’t seem to care about how terrible Rocky sounded. Instead, they matched their voice to Rocky. As they sang, sharing their happiness at being together once again, Rocky’s nervousness faded away as they relaxed into the weaving. The world narrowed down to just them and Adrian. There was nowhere else Rocky would rather be.
