Candice's calculated smile remained trained upon her daughter. Only the narrowing of her eyes betrayed her displeasure as servants moved silently about the room, carrying away the untouched course of their abruptly departed guest. "I know we raised you better, darling-" "That man was dreadful, Mother. A miserable conversationalist on his best day." Candice set down her fork with deliberate care. "Whereas Monsieur de Clermont is not? I do imagine you would have preferred his company and conversational skills..." A strained silence settled between them. Sabrina knew well enough that the mention of his name was no idle remark. While her mother had offered it with matter-of-fact nonchalance, she was watching for the slightest shift in her expression, the briefest hesitation. It was a test, as so many of their conversations had become when it came down to the subject of marriage. Candice wished to know where her daughter stood after seeing them together. Whether de Clermont occupied her thoughts. Whether she needed to be concerned about any dangerous whispers starting about the two. Sabrina had learned long ago that kind of inquiry indicated an intention. Any hint of interest would only complicate matters and transform the search for a husband into a campaign specifically designed to divert her attention elsewhere. Her only option was to offer the Countess nothing of value, to let her mother speculate. Speculation was far less dangerous than certainty. "Must I entertain every dull man in France to satisfy you?" "No," Candice replied coolly, taking a sip of her wine. "Only one. And you do not need to love him, darling. What you need is to choose wisely before society chooses for you, or worse, brands you as difficult." Her daughter's jaw tightened. "All I wish for is to see your future secured. I fail to grasp why you insist on making a battle of what should be a straightforward matter."  "You assured me the estate is in no danger. That the King intends to keep his promise to Father." "Good fortune could vanish in a blink of an eye, Sabrina. Society is merciless to those who fail to strengthen their position it it." Candice dabbed delicately at the corner of her mouth. "Your father spent years ensuring our family would be regarded among the most respected in France. I have no desire to let foolish pursuits destroy his legacy." "You speak as though marriage is nothing but a strategic arrangement. You used to say you would have chosen Father, no matter what family he was born into." Candice's expression softened, though her resolve did not. "While His Majesty looks favorably upon our family, we must ensure that favor is matched by an alliance strong enough to endure anything." "And if I turn down every suitor you present?" A faint smile touched the Countess' lips, she was never one to back down from a challenge. "Then I shall simply continue presenting them until you come to your senses and realize your Mother knows best."
