As a grey-asexual I can see how some people read this as sexual and as a dancer to me it is just people expressing with their bodies the way they feel. As a survivor of incest and sexual violence I feel that no one has the right to look at me or anyone else doing things with our bodies and interpret them as sexual invitations in any way, from appreciation to participation.

Images like these may turn a person on but I want more than anything for people to own their own sexual responses and not attribute them to the targets. Even if it’s porn, yes! Consent culture = owning your desire. It’s not mean, or hard, or shameful to say, “I WANT THIS PERSON I FIND SEXY!” What isn’t sexy is saying, “THIS PERSON MADE ME WANT THEM BECAUSE OF X!” with X being ANYTHING.

I may overreact but I want CONSENT CULTURE. Consent is sexy, Laci Green taught me so.

This is one of the many reasons I fear involuntary commitment more than anything else in the world. Most institutions are the equivalent of incarceration, with the added bonus loss of liberty that says people can drug you without your permission. It’s unfathomable to me that people think that when I’m in crisis I should go to a hospital. That’s the last place I want to be when I’m that vulnerable. Or ever. “Here, check into a prison and be experimented on and deprived of privacy!” is not my idea of a healing or recuperative experience.

Even if Jessica and I can legally marry, we really don’t have the option to.

That is, we don’t have the option unless we want to risk losing the disability benefits that sustain our survival.

However, various forms of disability benefits that we have between us put a constraint on the possibility of our legal marriage. For Supplemental Security Income, the total benefits between two individuals are automatically reduced 25 percent upon marrying, and if only one is receiving SSI and the other has more income, “deeming” — or as I call it, the “sugar daddy provision” — comes into play. Deeming assumes that a person who receives SSI and is married to a person with significant income or resources will be taken care of, and thus the benefits will be reduced or eliminated for the SSI recipient, no matter how much the richer spouse keeps their resources separate.
