Everyone was like angst & tragedy, meanwhile theres Harada Sanosuke...

This entire scene between Hijikata and Souji is insanely good. It is such an interesting character study for both characters and their relationship.

Souji being sure that Hijikata could save Kondo confirms three things:

Despite how mocking he is, Souji believes that Hijikata is the most competent person to support Kondo and that Hijikata is better at it that he would be (hence why he is jealous of him).

Souji trusts Hijikata to be the person to protect Kondo efficiently from most things including things Souji has no control over.

So if something bad happens to Kondo, it can only come from Hijikata willingly letting that happen.
