Improper middle eastern representation and lack of Iranian representation
In media, any and all middle eastern rep has boiled down to;
A complete and insensitive combination of bangali, southeast asian and indian culture and then calling it Afghani, Pakistani or Iranian
Ppl using Jasmine and Lilac Cookie as examples for rep
None of this is accurate in the goddamn slightest.
The only rep I had growing up was Aladdin. An incredibly racist movie. I still love it due to nostalgia, but itโs ultimately harmful. It was made by white ppl, without a single middle eastern to oversee production. Eurocentric beauty standards are placed on the main characters, making them look like entirely different races. While side characters look more like actual middle easterns, but are portrayed as undesirable. (Except for the classic belly dancers).
Aladdin is supposedly Arabian, and Iran isnโt Arabian, so this isnโt even actual rep for me. Itโs an insulting mix of several other cultures, including India. Most ppl donโt even know the magic carpet came from a Persian tale. And the fact that Indian culture is corporated in an Arabian movie.
Americans know so little about the middle east that senators once voted to fucking bomb Agrabah (A FICTIONAL COUNTRY). Which just goes to show ppl know nothing about the middle east. My mom has said she was persian and ppl genuinely did not know where that was.
My whole life my mom insisted I hide my culture in front of Americans. That I stay out of the sun to avoid getting too tan, etc. Yet thereโs so many Persians in NYC alone (Ik this thanks to the Persian New Year parade) that go hidden and under represented. Thousands of ppl erased from media entirely.
Not to mention, you know in doctorโs offices where you have put in what race you are? Middle eastern isnโt a fucking option. Do I put Asian? No, bc most ppl think of east asians with that term. My mom constantly insisted I put white, and that I was white. Yeah, Iranians are not white. White passing? Yes, but not white. Several ppl have tried to guess where I was from- Italian and Latino were the most popular guesses. It got to the point where I had a whole crisis on what race I was.
I had a crisis about what race I was.
Granted I was still in elementary school, but still.
I was too tan and my culture didnโt align with white folks, but I wasnโt latino either. But I wasnโt Indian, nor afghani, nor Pakistani.
Iranians have nothing in media.
The closest to decent rep I have is Kamala Khan. And even she isnโt Iranian/Persian. Sheโs Pakastani. Which is the closest Iโll ever get to rep.
Srsly, back in 2020 when ppl thought Iran was gonna start shit, men were sexualizing Iranian models thinking all Iranian women looked like that. We donโt. We have eagle noses and weโre slightly tan, we can have brightly colored eyes and light hair or dark hair. It all depends.
Regardless, if no one is going to make an Iranian character for representation Iโll do it my fucking self.
