A Little Something Sweet || Lilith & Delphina
The words washed a wave of calmness over the small creature. Delphina had known exactly what Lilith had needed. Her obsession had taken over her life, and now, she knew exactly what the oracle was referring to. She had lived with her routines for a good portion of her life, but it was only recently, upon entering Bazaaro, that the need to keep things straight and tidy had started to become a problem again. Out in the world, she had been free. Free to roam and go anywhere she pleased, but here she was no better off than one of the caged animals living in the back of the camp waiting to go on to perform. She was confined to certain areas. Having lived freely and on her own, the world had been her oyster. But she was, now, trapped and restless. Restrained with only one thing to doā¦live in her mind.
Slowly standing up, Lilith made her way back to the basin. Grabbing the small water pitcher, she poured the cool water into the tub. Rolling her loose sleeves up higher onto her arms, the blonde closed her eyes and stuck her hands into the water. With her mind on the small flame behind her, she began to think of the warmth fire often offered. The heat traveling through her tiny form, she let the heat radiate out of her hands and soon the water was boiling. The heat and burn from the water had felt good. It would be a temporary fix until she could actually get soap, but the water had been cleansed, and now, her hands, burning and red, seemed as if they had been cleansed of the dirty world around her.
Opening her eyes and pulling her hands out slowly, Lilith held them up and let the air dry them; the heat still radiating off of her body. It didnāt take long for the glisten of the water to disappear. And once they were completely dry, she lowered them and clasped them in front of her keeping her spot by the basin, "Thank you, Delphina." She looked to the floor, "Itās not that I fear death. I relish in the day when Iām not reborn again. It will be a blessed day. I will finally be able to return to my family, who are no longer here." A soft, sad smile overtook her pale features.
"No, I don't suppose that it's death any of us fear," Del said in response. She sat back and watched as Lilith took care of her ablutions, her dark eyes following the young woman's every move as she made her way around the small tent and took care of her business. "Death is a way of unifying ourselves with something greater than ourselves, and of escaping the world with its confinements. It is what brings death I believe we all fear on one level or another. We fear the pain, or we fear the sadness of what we've left behind. For those who we'll never see again." She sighed and leaned forward, placing her elbows on her knees as she watched Lilith move about.
It saddened Delphina to see so much going on in the world around her, so much fear and dread and so much death. She'd been dead for over a thousand years and yet every time she was confronted with it, she felt a pang of something she didn't quite understand. What hurt Lilith so? Death, she would think, would be a solace after so many years living the way she had. Freedom came from death, but death came at a price, and now of course Lilith could no longer die except to be reborn.
"Are you unhappy here?" Del asked suddenly. She'd been happy with the carnival from the very start, but there were others who might not be. It hadn't occurred to her until this moment, the way Lilith's shoulders seemed a bit stiffer than she might have otherwise been. "Do you miss your life from before?"
