People out there who are new to AO3 might not realize that some of the things they are posting actually violate the Terms of Service. While these kinds of posts are great for social media sites like tumblr or Twitter, they are actually not allowed on AO3. AO3 isn’t a social media site. It’s a fanfiction archive. 

Since most people don’t read the Terms of Service for sites that they use (no shade - I’m including myself in that description), I thought I’d make a post about things that you should not post on AO3. This list is in no particular order:

requests to help find a fic

lists of prompts

requests for prompts

translations of someone else’s work, if you don’t have their permission (this includes published fiction as well as fanfic)

someone else’s work (either published or fannish)

liveblog reactions to watching episodes 

invitations to a discord server (it’s fine in an author’s note, but not if it’s posted as if it’s a fic)

songfics that include the full lyrics to a copyrighted song

a placeholder - no actual fic, just a work posted saying that a fic will eventually be there

class notes or homework (unless that homework is fic or fandom meta)

searches for role playing partners

rec lists

requests for recommendations

callout posts

fandom organizing (ex. let’s vote X for People’s Choice!)

requests for money

As new people join the site, works like these are bound to be posted to AO3. Give friends and fellow fans a heads up, and hopefully by letting people know ahead of time they can avoid posting these mistakes.

The worst thing about it was that Hux didn’t even seem to notice, and that… he was fairly sure defied the purpose of the exercise. Perhaps in his effort to wield extreme control over the Force flowing through him, he’d been to subtle. Even when he slipped into Hux’s mind at the most inopportune of times, massaging his subconscious pleasure centres as he gave impassioned speeches, as he commanded from the bridge, Hux never made any outward signs. He didn’t even smile. It was infuriating. This was supposed to prove his control over the minds of others. It was supposed to test his finesse. Pain was easy, a swinging cudgel, a blunt instrument. Pleasure, passion… these required greater skill. Dextrous manipulation. Concentration and precision. If Hux only knew what Kylo was doing, Kylo was sure these were traits the General would appreciate in his co-commander. But, he never budged, not one inch, under any of Kylo’s ministrations.

The door slides open with a quiet hiss, and Hux’s headache responds by lurching itself to the precipice of a full-blown migraine.

Suppressing a wince, Hux doesn’t bother to glance up as Ren steps inside. He knows it’s Ren, if not by the distinctive footfall or the storm of energy that floods the room, then simply because Ren is the only one on this ship capable of overriding the lock command on the door.

“I’m busy,” Hux says, testily, “and the door was locked for a reason. Is there some dire emergency that requires my assistance?”

Ren remains silent until, begrudgingly, Hux looks up at him. He stands in the center of the room, arms crossed, glaring at Hux through his stupid mask.  “You’ve spent your entire shift here.”

“And? It’s my shift, what do you care how I spend it?”

Ren stalks forward, halting at the edge of the desk. “You’ve also spent your last two personal shifts in this room.”

Hux has the distinct impression that he’s being scolded, and his spine stiffens with defensiveness. “Your powers of observation never fail to amaze, Lord Ren. If that’s all - ”

“You haven’t slept in 32 hours,” Ren interrupts, gripping the edge of the desk and leaning close. “I counted.”

Kylo Ren comes back from an extended mission to find his General a little softer.

Inspired by this glorious post, because honestly - how could I resist Kylo Ren bringing Hux to tears under any circumstance, let alone one so perfectly heartwrenching?

Hux looked down. One of Ren’s enormous hands was grasping at the hem of his shirt. He slapped at it, trying to get the drunken idiot off him before he worked some actual wrinkles into the fabric, but Ren clung on stubbornly, frowning down at the patterns and color like they had personally offended him.

“Did you buy it at a thrift shop?” He continued, seemingly determined. “I bet they thought they would never get rid of the thing until you came along…”

Hux glared up at the crooked grin that telegraphed exactly how clever Ren thought he was being. The alcohol in Hux’s blood kind of wanted to hit him just to find out what would happen, though fortunately he wasn’t quite drunk enough for that yet. He settled for another seemingly ineffectual shove instead.

“Get off me you ogre,” he hissed, wishing the words sounded crisper. “Ruin the fabric and you’ll pay for another one.”

“Another one…?” The bastard sounded positively amused now. “You bought this in an actual store? Don’t tell me this is some fuckin’ designer shit…”

The hand in his shirt was tugging him forward and Hux went, not wanting to risk trying to pull the material from the other boy’s meaty grip. Honestly, it was like he had been built from the findings in a particularly well-stocked meat locker. He was practically an animal.

“It absolutely is,” he said when his chest bumped Ren’s. He narrowed his eyes through the slight haze in his vision at the other boy. “And it cost probably more than you could afford so I think you’ll want to be careful.” In truth it hadn’t been as much as all that, but hell if he was going to let Ren know it. Not when the bastard’s smile hadn’t slipped an inch and Hux could feel the heat of his breath ghosting over his cheeks.

“Oh, I’m being careful.”

“Are you,” Hux couldn’t resist a scoff despite the way his blood was starting to warm. “Could have fooled me.”

The hand in his shirt slipped beneath the fabric and Hux’s mouth opened around nothing as that massive hand wrapped itself around his waist.

“I can be careful,” Ren said insistently, thumbing over the jut of Hux’s hip and all Hux could think was how insanely warm he felt, like some kind glorified furnace given shape as a man.

Kylo cast his eyes to the side, observing the man alongside him. 

Hux stood, just out of the shadows, languid and impassive and delectably severe in the stiff lines of his uniform. Kylo’s fingers twitched; itched to follow the tempting inch of skin that peeked above his collar and disappeared to what Kylo knew was flawlessly creamy skin. Graced with tempting cinnamon freckles and a silver tongue, Hux had hooked him effortlessly.

It had been a simple thing for Hux to get Kylo into his bed, easier still for Kylo to show him his true nature. Just once, Hux had been swept away in a pleasure he hadn’t dreamed existed. Just once, Kylo had allowed himself to pull cries from his lax body.

Just once, and never again.

They couldn’t.

They both knew why.

Still, Hux relived that night with every waking moment. Had made it his mission to break Kylo down, see him take back his claim that Hux’s soul would be forfeit should they do this again. Hux had thought that task would be easy as well.

At every agonizing turn, Kylo had shown him he was mistaken.

It was driving Kylo mad.
