Ellie had returned from her watch shift late at night. You had been worried since she’d taken longer than usual, but as always, she came back anyway.

—There you are... gosh I was worried... — You said with a slight frown as you walked toward her. Ellie looked tired and dirty, as if something had gone wrong.

—I know, I know... We got delayed. We didn’t expect to run into so many infected on the route. — Ellie replied with a heavy sigh, clearly exhausted.

As she passed by you, she gave you a small kiss on the cheek before heading to the bed, sitting down carefully with evident pain in her body. You watched her and shook your head in frustration. You knew Ellie had a habit of overworking herself, and while you usually didn’t complain, it always upset you when she ended up hurt because of it.

—Do you want me to clean you up? —

You asked, preparing a damp cloth to tend to her wounds and the dried blood on her skin.

—It’s not necessary; I can do it myself. —

—Nonsense... — You walked over to where she was and sat down beside her, gently helping her remove her jacket so she could relax.

—You’re always so sweet... You’re gonna give me cavities. — Ellie joked with a small chuckle as she set her clothes aside, left only in a worn tank top.

You started cleaning her arms gently, being careful not to put too much pressure on the scrapes on her skin. Once her arms were done, you cleaned a small scratch on her cheek, then checked her back to make sure she didn’t have any other injuries, lightly feeling with your hand.

—Hey, I’m fine now, don't worry! — Ellie said with a slight smile, truly appreciating your gentleness and concern, even if it was something she needed to get used to.

—I was just making sure. Let me do my job. — You said, playfully tapping her shoulder before setting the now slightly dirty cloth aside. You took a moment to look at her before resting your head on her shoulder.

The two of you stayed in a comfortable silence for a few moments until Ellie decided to speak:

—Thank you babe. — Her voice was quieter than usual, as if she felt a bit embarrassed.

—...It’s nice having you around. Sorry I’m not... good enough. — She added. You lifted your head from her shoulder to look at her with mild disapproval. You never liked it when Ellie felt less than she was, but you knew she couldn’t help it.

—Hey... Don’t say that, okay? Of course you’re good enough, Ellie. — As you spoke, you moved your hand to gently stroke her chin, subtly guiding her to look at you.

—You think so? I mean... I’m kind of a mess sometimes, you know? You’re so much sweeter than me, you always know what to do... I don’t know, it’s like you’re the perfect girlfriend or something. It’s almost a little creepy sometimes. — Ellie chuckled lightly at the end, trying to ignore the pleasant warmth in her chest as she opened up to you. The truth was, you made her feel... safe. It was something she’d never admit outright, but she had the intention to try, or at least something like that.

—Ellie, you’re a great girlfriend, okay? I don’t remember complaining. — You playfully pinched her cheek to reassure her in a casual way. You knew she didn’t like overly serious affection, so you always tried to approach it with a bit of humor, just like she did.

—Thanks babe, really. — Ellie said taking your hand gently, and placing a small kiss in your knuckles before letting you cradle her face.

—You’re welcome. Now... I think you should rest; it’s late. — You spoke gently, brushing her cheek with your thumb as you cupped her face lovingly, giving her a small smile.

—I guess so... Damn, I'll be sore tomorrow... — She chuckled again before wrapping her arm around your waist, pulling both of you down onto the bed.

—Goodnight, babe. — you whispered against her hair before pressing a kiss to her forehead.

—Goodnight... — Ellie yawned a little before leaning closer to give you a tender kiss on the lips.

You held her close while playing a little with her hair, until she fell asleep in your arms, she seemed... so happy to be sleeping there, with you...

With one last smile, you closed your eyes to sleep as well, feeling glad about having Ellie there, just the two of you, taking a rest.
