Next up someone is going to claim that the Narnia series isn't kids books.
Kids books is probably not the best way to word it, you can enjoy them at every age, including your childhood, as you get older you may find new truths in them, but they're still good for any age.
Errr.....
I was reading Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie in second grade I think? And then when I was 9 I was reading every book I could find at the library on the Holocaust. The one I remember best is this one:
Nearly a million Jews were consumed by the ovens of Tre…
The copy I read had an all white cover with the word Treblinka in black and underlined in red on it though.
And I didn't grow up very privileged. My father died a month after I turned seven, my mother boarded socks at a sock factory, and I went to rural southern Appalachian schools. I mean, come on, did NCLB and the teaching "reading" by guessing words do that much damage to the kids?
Err, well....I guess it did.
I went out for a short walk a while ago. It's not super hot today but boy is it super humid. It's only around 80 degrees but I still had to open the refrigerator and stand in front of it for a bit when I got home.
In other news Vega is sitting in my lap right now and she has very pretty gray stripes and beautiful eyes and an awesome purr and I love her very much.

stop making shows about americans in europe… try europeans in america instead. the outrage of not knowing exactly what something costs at a store,, no public transport,, everyone smiling in your face and waiters scaring you by constantly popping up at your table… ice in your water for some reason,, the kind of culture clash i want to see!!

all his neighbours immediately distrust him because he’s russian and they haven’t gotten over the red scare and also no one new has moved in to the town in almost a decade
but then he participates in podunknowheresville’s annual lawnmower race with a monstrosity made from scrap metal and far too much duct tape and he wins second place in a neck-and-neck final round against sam americason, the most anti-russian man in the village
and ivan is scared that he blew his one chance to get accepted by the community but then sam jumps off his lawnmower and pats ivan on the back and says “you did good, brother. i’m sorry i misjudged you. looks like hillbillies are the same no matter what country we come from. you’re just like us, ivan. guess our redneck town has room for a little extra red” and everybody laughs and the credits roll while the ussr national anthem gets played on a banjo and washboard
Seconding Ivan in West Virginia
honestly fandom has ruined me because now any time i'm in the desert and i see two vast and trunkless legs of stone or a half-sunk shattered visage i'm like "omg just like in Ozymandias" and its like come on girl not every half-sunk shattered visage is Ozymandias
Happy birthday to Lyudmila Pavlichenko (born July 12, 1916), Soviet sniper in World War II, with 309 confirmed kills.
A true role model for today.
Woody Guthrie wrote a song for her:
I told the spousal person he is really pretty, and he said I was silly. I told him, no, I'm really sane, when they open up your skull they put even more sanity inside.

i know everyone loves baby seals, but sometimes i really am blown away by their whimsy. they took a teddy bear and made it a mermaid. i feel very wonderful knowing we live on the same planet as puppy mermaid teddies
I wanted to get out of the house today so we went to eat at a nearby restaurant this afternoon. Then I wanted to go to the bookstore. Which we hadn't been to in quite some time, since the spousal person works at the library and he just brings home books for me to read.
I've been feeling fine lately and just chilling and reading and playing games, but man, the longer car ride to the bookstore and then the standing up for a while showed me that I do still need to be off work and I am still recovering.
Am home now and will rest and chill.
Also I got three things at the bookstore!
A collection of Dungeon Crawler Carl pins, which I need to find something to put the "Mongo is appalled!" pin on.
Monk and Robot by Becky Chambers. I saw the description about robots wandering off on their own and then one coming back to talk to a monk and I had to get it. Read the first couple pages at the store and I like them.
Caste by Isabel Wilkerson. The spousal person said he'd read it and it was good and I've seen some people mention it online.
Also the newest book by a girl I went to Duke's TIP program with, Karen Russell, was there. Looked at her author pic. She doesn't look like a teenager now. ;)
Bookstores have changed since the olden days. There was a lot more fantasy romance and isekai type stuff and it seems like kdrama style plots are now popular for books in general. I also saw a good amount of non-het romance, which yay for that.
There was also a vinyl and CD and DVD section and yes, I know I don't look like a teenager anymore either.
I like existing with all of you.
