I havent gathered my thoughts on this topic so im curious to hear your opinion. do you think the port mafia has been romanticized in recent bsd chapters? what with tachihara's arc etc.

uhhh as for "romanticised", tbh i never understand what that term really means somehow. like, in canon it's seen as less dangerous and threatening now? yes i guess, it has definitely gone down the "first enemy of the protags that later ends up becoming a team in the face of greater evil" path, but that was obviously always the intent of the port mafia's arc. the very point of keeping mori at the head of the port mafia is that he loves yokohama in all its twisted glory, and just like the ADA and the Special Abilities Division, has a vested interest in keeping Yokohama safe from outsiders that infiltrate it for the Book.
talking about tachihara's arc (that is, how being in the port mafia is shown as a good thing), i think...hm. when thinking about tachihara specifically, his alternative is the hunting dogs, which to me reads as the frontline of authoritative fascism in BSD (flay me alive for this take but! fukuchi, their leader, falls for fyodor's fearmongering tactics and ends up killing thousands to keep "theirs" safe. classic.). as compared to that, you can't really say that the port mafia is worse in any aspect.
in BSD, i think all the organisations except the armed detective agency (which is the only agency to stick to their code of conduct even at great detriment to themselves, and end up disbanded because they do so), are involved in some sort of ill practices. the port mafia is actually portrayed as better than the governmental agencies who do all sorts of human rights violations (mushitaro and the seventh agency?!) "lawfully", and i can't say i disagree with that sentiment. in fact, i would say i find the hunting dogs far more unsavory than the port mafia.
i do have another frame of thought regarding this though, and that is when remaining in the port mafia is somehow not seen as a reflection of some characters just because the fandom likes them (coughchuuyacough). like certain characters are going to be seen as morally bankrupt (coughdazaicough) no matter how much they change their actions, showing that most people tend to base their idea of what is "good" and "bad" based on whose mentality they find more typical to society and hence more palatable rather than what they choose to do in their life.
i think trying to question BSD for showing someone as "good" when you (general) think of them as "bad" is a task destined for failure. the beauty of BSD is that it's made of people who are shaped by circumstance. akutagawa, who is loyal to the port mafia in mainline, detests it in BEAST. similarly for atsushi. just think about the kind of characters who are/were in the port mafia: kouyou was held captive there but she came to care for the organisation that mori shaped. dazai came there as a lost child who couldn't see anything worth living for in the world and hoped that he would discover something worth holding on to while witnessing humans at their rawest, and he left the second he realised there really was nothing he could discover externally that would fix the kind of impression of humanity he had in his mind. akutagawa was a child in horribly abused in the slums to the extent he lost the capability to show emotions or have any hope of a decent life, and he was brought into the mafia with the hope of being given a reason to live. mori wanted to save Yokohama from the erratic orders of the previous boss and. kyouka was essentially trafficked into the mafia and used as a killing weapon. i think this isn't a case of romanticisation but just showing the ground realities of the people who are involved. all of this is not even considering that the port mafia was the kindest option any Ability user had before the ADA because by god you can't trust the government (look at chuuya's case, or the hunting dogs).
tldr: BSD never tries to prove any character as morally superior OR irredeemable, so i think there's no point in thinking about whether the manga should condemn the port mafia or not. also, imho the humanisation of the port mafia isn't a case of romanticisation either.
Can i just say Adachi absolutely nailed the only time we see Ranpo's inner thoughts that he didn't voice out in untold origins

Ranpo was absorbed in thought. Boisterous and puzzling still beat out quiet and dismal in his book. He hated the countryside. He hated the people, the school, and essentially everything else there. The only thing he liked was his parents.

β’ i already wrote about my post-dark era activities hc in this fic, but i also hc that dazai met fyodor for the 1st time in the 2 years he was underground as "payment" to the special abilities division. he nearly does die during this mission, worsening ango's guilt.
β’ while dazai found odasaku peerlessly interesting and unique and liked him a lot from TDIPUD itself, he fell in love with him after DHC when he took in the orphans (because to me he looks like he's been obsessed for a while in dark era, but in the dhc arc he describes his feelings towards oda as "interesting guy" in the guidebook)

babysaku started getting caught and imprisoned simply for the curry, and he would escape after eating it. growing sick of his bullshit, the guards begged him to tell him what he wanted, and he said he wanted to meet the guy who made the curry. that's how they met, and he bailed curry uncle out and funded him to open a restaurant simply so he could have the curry without going the trouble of being imprisoned. explains why he was broke af by TDIPUD lol.

We attended the 10th Anniversary Banquet of the Stray Dogs story reading, a new story by Asagiri!
The event took place at the Pacifico Yokohama National Convention Hall, in Minatomirai, right next to the water. The merch sales, open to those even without event tickets, started at 10am, and already at 9, there were at least a couple hundred people in line!
We didn't arrive at the sales table until 11!! π
In addition to the new release merch, they had exhibits of VA and artist signatures, the entire host of books (here's your checklist π€£) the new Harukawa merch (that booklet is today's script), and a new, penguin suit lottery (gambling) line that just dropped.
Breaking for lunch at the plethora of food trucks along the boardwalk, we went for the best of all Japan's festival cuisine...kebab sandwich!
1pm was when the hall opened for ticket holders to enter the event venue - luckily there's a separate entrance for them - because the merch line was even longer! If you'd arrived at 1 thinking you'd get merch before showtime at 2.... that line would take you at *least* an hour to get through! Whenever a merch sale opens, arrive at least an hour early so you don't hate life!
In any case, we arrived in plenty of time, merch already in hand, for the show.
The stage is set, the side of a worn, brick building, gas lamps shining dimly and warm outside. It might even be the ADA headquarters, but there are no distinct markings.
Spoilers below~π
I am not fully fluent in Japanese yet, so this is my vague impression of what happened. If anyone else has attended these events and has a better interpretation, please ping me!
The event opened with the voices of the Hunting Dogs telling the various rules to the audience.
The voice actors for Dazai, Atsushi, Kyouka, Akutagawa, and Chuuya came out on stage. (This was my first time seeing Atsushi, Kyouka, and Akutagawa in person!) The story was set on a large airliner, and on the screen popped up a seat map of the airplane. Chuuya and Akutagawa were toward the front of economy in a pair of seats, Chuuya near the window. Dazai, Atsushi, and Kyouka sat in the middle 3-seater row near the back.
Then it launched right into the reading.
Chuuya and Akutagawa opened the play with a conversation - Chuuya something about looking forward toward the trip, and Akutagawa not looking to converse, but tersely acknowledging every statement. Chuuya has a bottle of wine, and Akutagawa orders a glass of water. *Glug, glug, glug...* Chuuya comments on Akutagawa's unwillingness to talk and also his thirst.
Panning to the rear, it is Atsushi's and Kyouka's first time on a plane. Dazai is energetic. Atsushi is nervous. Kyouka is studiously reading a large book. Dazai notices the Port Mafia, to Atsushi's apprehension, and asks Kyouka how she feels about them. She says she hates the Mafia. Then Dazai gets up and strolls forward...
...and jump scares Akutagawa and Chuuya. Chuuya denies being surprised, Akutagawa acknowledges being surprised (because Dazai said, I surprised you didn't I?). Dazai harasses them for a few minutes and then departs. Akutagawa tells Chuuya he's realized why Dazai came up, and that was to harass them. And to steal Chuuya's wine.
Chuuya storms after Dazai, who has locked himself into the bathroom. Chuuya pounds on the door and demands he open up. Dazai refuses and also claims or threatens to pour Chuuya's wine out. Chuuya gets so pissed off he (appears to) use his powers to break open the door.
No one's inside. Dazai and the wine are missing.
Chuuya regroups with Akutagawa and then informs the ADA duo that Dazai is gone. Atsushi departs to look for him. And then disappears.
Kyouka, seeing that both Dazai and Atsushi are now gone, becomes distraught and begs Akutagawa and Chuuya to help her find them. They're important to her. They agree - and Chuuya also emphasizes he wants his wine back.
They look for a while, and converse, especially Kyouka and Akutagawa. Kyouka asks Akutagawa why he brought Kyouka into the Mafia, and he says it was because they are similar. It was like when Dazai brought him into the Mafia. (Vague impressions here, remember that. The actual script is releasing later and this can all be checked.)
Akutagawa orders another water. *Glug, glug, glug.*
Kyouka then launches into ADA investigative mode, and starts thinking about what she's noticed with her senses, sound being one of them. An idea strikes Chuuya and he departs.
And then it's just Kyouka and Akutagawa. After some discussion, Kyouka suddenly says outside the bulkhead is the answer and uses Demon Snow to slash apart the plane.
It all disappears and then Dazai and Atsushi come back, and Dazai explains.
It seems the plane was some kind of mechanical mock-up that had never left the ground in the first place. The purpose was to give Kyouka a chance to speak and work with the Port Mafia, and perhaps reconcile some with Akutagawa.
When questioned how Kyouka figured it out, she answers something about the sounds of opening the canned water, the night outside with no stars or clouds, etc.
Chuuya then totters in and he is drunk off his ass, having downed all his wine. He seems surprised and disappointed that it was all a sham! (How did they get everyone onto a fake plane and make them think it was real?? What about the attendants, the passengers, the luggage...π)
Dazai asks Kyouka what she thinks of the Mafia again, and she gives a more thoughtful answer.
I believe someone raises how they're getting home (maybe Chuuya) and I think Dazai says Fitzgerald is picking them up in a boat. Could be way off about this. In any case, everyone returns home.

The next event is a Q&A with the cast, and the theme is paired relationships. The MC asks each pairing to talk about the relationship. We start with Atsushi and Kyouka. They talk about how they are important to each other, a bit about the history (with nostalgic images on screen), and how they protect each other. Next was Dazai and Chuuya, and right away Dazai repeats he hates Chuuya π But as they talk they also mention their lives have often depended on each other, so they have a mutual existence (vibes here kids, *vibes* not accurate translations).
And then Dazai and Akutagawa was next, and they showed scenes when Dazai brought Akutagawa into the Mafia.
And here I'm getting fuzzy because I think there was a 4th pair but I can't remember. There was also a common relationship that wasn't brought up and I think it was SSKK. (It's 7pm and I'm only just drinking my first coffee of the day π€£ it was a lot of content I tried desperately to understand and remember π )
Kyouka was very energetic and enthusiastic during this chat ^^

Was it last year or 2 ago that they had the BSD concert with all 3 bands? I was thinking about wanting to hear them again, so I feel very fortunate all 3 bands were brought in to play key songs.
(But gods, the volume was SO LOUD. No, it was WAY louder than past Granrodeo concerts. Omfg, I was almost beside myself with thoughts of military sound weapons by the time Granrodeo was playing π€£π΅ I don't know if it was the acoustics of the room or the technicks but there was weird left-right sound artifacts and I was wondering if I could feel my ear drums start to die. Kishou was also adjusting his ear mic frequently and all I could think was you and me both buddy. π΅βπ«π΅)
SCREEN Mode & Luck Life played first. My mind is failing me on precisely where certain videos were played but here we go:
There was a video of anime scenes shown along with one of the songs and it was beautifully cut, one character, one action scene into another. I distinctly remember a bit with Ranpo licking an ice cream cone and then transitioning soon after into a view of Chuuya activating Corruption as the camera pans up his neck to his face and. I mean if there are any Ranpo/Chuuya stans. Go do something with that. Tag me. There was another cut later where Ranpo and Chuuya were close to each other too, probably the Poeβs book trap π
Another song was played to Storm Bringer stage play scenes, which was a treat to see - 16 Dazai, Chuuya, and Verlaine all on stage. It's nice to see the homage to all parts of BSD.
Luck Life was very emotional, very thankful to have been picked up as the band for many of BSD openings and closings. Really sang his heart out, talked about how his songs are about living, for everyone, spoke about his love, and everyone's love, for BSD.
Granrodeo played the usual suspects. But one of the videos showed scenes from Beast.
And here, I am willing to bet I'm getting an experience that no one else is.
Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I haven't seen Beast.
And now there are scenes, unmistakably from Beast, playing to a Granrodeo song I have not heard, but which I can only assume plays in the movie.
I am seeing it with eyes completely unclouded by Beast. Every clip, every expression, every moment of action completely new and enthralling. Fyodor shows up in it? Shibusawa? I was completely enraptured by what was on screen. Can you imagine that? But you've all already seen the movie. It was wild.
It's one thing to see actors in the stage play. The stage play has no setting, its very minimal and abstract. It's another to see actors in stills from the movie with background. And it's a completely different thing when they're suddenly moving about in a real world. Some characters I've only seen as 2D anime, and now here they are, unmistakable and real. It was like looking into an isekai, I swear.

New black and white Harukawa art with Dazai and...(I'm sorry, I couldn't tell if it was Atsushi or Kenji) standing at a riverside in leisure clothing. Atsushi/Kenji had a hat, which is why I couldn't quite tell. This will be merch, didn't catch the release date.

The cast commented it was cute, why is he sitting on an office chair like that π. The rest of the images were silhouettes, to be released one at a time. The usual suspects were there, including Odasaku. The cast comments, are we all up there? A strange, unrecognizable figure with seemingly a lot of wild hair is at the very end of the lineup. One of the cast comments, who is that?
A music video with Trash Candy and Luck Life songs is coming out. I hope it's that beautifully cut piece I mention above, everybody needs to see Ranpo transitioning into Chuuya like that.

Finally, the new, expensive, limited blue and gold Harukawa group image we all saw last night, up on the screen. It zooms onto each character's face with a voice over of each character thanking everyone for coming. I caught snippets:
Chuuya: Be careful in Yokohama
Akutagawa: ended with, I want Dazai to see/noticd me.
Kyouka: Happy that everyone had fun, very enthusiastic.
Dazai: Bedroom voice. Happy that everyone enjoyed it.
Atsushi with a great message: Go live the way you want to live.
