Platypus are just a part of a really really old group of mammals called Monotremes (egg laying mammals). Because of this, platypus sit in the part of the evolutionary branch that had not become as specialized in some aspects as placental or marsupial mammals, such as humans having nipples rather than full body milk leakage. Nature likes to experiment, and having spread out modified sweat glands rather than having them clustered at specific points was just a route nature took.

Hell, its even highly likely our last common ancestor with monotremes did sweat milk as well, with placental and marsupial mammal's mammary glands growing more and more clustered in what I guess were convenient spots so that their young could effectively feed on a compressed stream rather than having a milk distribution that could have constituted waste if their offspring were not able to feed off all parts of skin consistently.

Monotremes I think are incredibly interesting fellas, not because I nessarily beleive their features to be odd, but that their features can offer a great ammount of information we could assume about early mammals and their divide from our last common ancestor from reptiles and birds. The better we can understand our connection to other organisms, then the better we can compare our understandings of our bodies to theirs! And vice versa.

It is very unfortunate that platypus populations are declining, as well as echinas (also milk sweating egg laying mammals) who are threatened and some species endangered. They are all that remains of modern monotremes, and soon we might not have anything left we can work to understand anymore about them.
