Ellie paused at McCree’s question. She thought about it for a second then shrugged.

“I have no fuckin’ idea” She said as surprised as Jesse. Ellie followed McCree’s lead through the building keeping an ear to the ground. What she saw there was something extremely different from anything she had seen before. They were like mutate toddler or goblins? maybe? they reminded her of those creatures in some of her comic books. Man they really liked Doritos. Though she could not blame them she never had the chance in her world to realize how great they were.

At Jesse’s question she shook her head.

“nah nothing in my world wants to eat anything outside human’s. Anyway the monsters in my world look like people with mushrooms growing out of their face. It is the reason I really can’t eat mushroom pizza.”

“If we shoot now they could get on top of us. I could stealth around and attract some towards me?’ 

     Hearing the confirmation that these things weren’t some form of zombies calmed some of McCree’s nerves, but a new set popped up; these creatures looked like nothing they’ve seen before...and that was concerning.

     He couldn’t help a soft chuckle, “Yeah, I was wonderin’ why you wouldn’t look at me when we have delivery the other night.”

    Hearing Ellie’s plan at first McCree didn’t like it; he didn’t want to give these things any chance to get at her...but she’s dealt with things much scarier than these little...gremlin lookin’ fucks.

     Sighing, “Just...make sure to not get caught? My aim’s good, but knowin’ how quick you are, there’s still the chance of me nickin’ yeah...but yeah, sounds like a plan. I’ll wait in your call.”

“Oh! Is that what happened?” Echo mimed scratching at their chin, head tilted curiously. Well, they did certainly remember being told about the adjustments made to their being, but had simply assumed it was a security measure. 

“I suppose it is only fair,” Echo said, nodding firmly. “If I were a human, or a human in charge of more humans, I would want to limit the damage one could do in any situation. I am still capable of learning. I’m satisfied with that.” 

They floated with a little twirl, circuits buzzing with excitement at McCree’s questioning. 

“Oh, McCree! You were right, Overwatch was back in operation! I went through what remaining databanks I could–Athena said to say hello to you, by the way–and I managed to get into contact with Agent Shimada and Agent Ziegler! We noticed a disturbance in Paris and went to investigate it and there were Null Sector Omnics invading!” 

It was with one might call childish delight that Echo described their story, zipping from one end of the lobby to the other, wings and boosters humming. 

“–There was a huge one trying to hurt the scientist, but then Agent Shimada performed his–” 

Echo squeaked as they, perhaps on automatic, attempted to dip into their Duplicated copy of Genji Shimada’s data and found their access very thoroughly denied. Their face fizzled for a moment, before they gave an inelegant shrug and sloppily waved their arms for effect. 

“Deflected the blasts! Agent Wilhelm and a girl I didn’t know arrived too, and that’s when I came in–oh, I said hello to Winston!–It was very exciting, Jesse, you would have had so much fun. Especially with the death lasers.”

     Hearing that Overwatch was back in action, McCree felt a mix of emotions: pride in that she was able to get back to everyone and she was able to help, guilt in that he wasn’t there to help, and a touch of fear...because if Overwatch was back in action, there were a number of people that wouldn’t take lightly to that...especially a certain member of Talon.

    Hearing that Genji and Mercy had showed up, McCree couldn’t hold his surprise, “Really? Angela showed up? I’m kinda surprised...she agreed that Overwatch should’ve been shutdown...it makes me happy to see that she’s joined back up though...” 

     For a moment, panic and worry when Echo made a sound and her face flickered. He thought that maybe the Mirror did more than just mess with her duplication thingy but then...then she mimicked Genji’s sword move...

     He tried to hold it in for Echo’s sake, but it was just so damn funny and cute that he couldn’t help but laugh, “E-Echo! I-I’m sorry! But without yer d-duplication stuff, it j-just sounds so o-off!”

     After taking a moment to calm down, McCree looked at Echo, wiping a tear, “Well, good that you said hi to Winston...and I’m glad that you found it excitin’- I’m sorry, did you say death lazers?” Worry filled McCree’s voice as he quickly took inventory of Echo’s appearance to see if there was any damage.

Echo pouted as they hovered gently to a landing, setting McCree back to his feet. What a–what was the word? Killjoy! Though, that was too harsh, perhaps. McCree was only looking out for them, as always. 

“I am the most low-key, ever. I have seen a man walking around with a skull for a face. Anyway…”

They leaned in close, hand to their mouth. 

“…My duplication systems have been sealed behind a firewall,” Echo reported, their voice fluctuating with disappointment. “It is most inconvenient, as it renders many of my multi-role programs inert without manual input. But it isn’t so bad.” 

They hugged McCree again, a laugh humming. 

“Besides, we have met once again! Do not worry, Field Agent Mccree, I have yet to encounter any laws that prohibit…beings of my specifications.”

    Feeling solid ground under his feet, McCree felt his head calm down and his train of thought not quiet as chaotic. Hearing about the main with a skull for a face made McCree re-re-re-re-realize that he wasn’t back on Route 66 waking Echo up...he was in Wonderland, but that didn’t stop McCree usual reflexes from kicking in; this reflex was especially ingrained in him due to the circumstances.

     Hearing that one of Echo’s systems was malfunctioning his instant reaction was to ask her how it was malfunctioning...but then the Wonderland aspect came back, “That...might’ve been because of the the mirror Echo...your copyin’ system is technically fine...from what I know...” technology wasn’t McCree’s strong suit.

“Hello! It is nice to meet you. I am Echo, a Multirole…” 

How strange. Echo watched the nervous looking applicant of the Seven Sins Alliance stumble back, quickly leaving the room. Were they perhaps nervous of Echo? Echo noted that their height was…particularly significant, even without the innate hovering modules. 

“Hm. It is currently impossible to see my physical form altered…” Echo pondered aloud. “My duplication ability has been rendered behind a particularly potent firewall, and there are no specialists within Wonderland that I have on file…Perhaps I should expand my files?”

As a robot–not even a true Omnic–Echo could not say that their ‘thoughts’ were interrupted. Rather, they relegated their ideas to a subprogram as someone else walked through the doors and into the lobby of the S.S.A. 

A very familiar someone. 

Echo zoomed forward, wrapping their arms around Jesse’s waist and effortlessly lifted them up into the air, spinning gleefully. 

“Howdy, cowboy!” they greeted joyfully. “What a very pleasant surprise!”

     McCree’s latest mission wasn’t too difficult and for once McCree wasn’t dead tired upon his arrival to the SSA; though the guy randomly running from the room.

    “Well...that’s different- WHAT IN THE HELL!?”

    Suddenly McCree was in the air and something warm and metal was surrounding his waist. Being in the air and not in some airplane was not something McCree was used to, so the yell at the end did rise in pitch.

    Then McCree heard the voice and McCree felt his entire body freeze, “..E...Echo!?” Pure surprise oozed from McCree’s voice as he saw the familiar face of the very illegal AI that he was in charge of.

     That didn’t stop from the large grin that formed on his face as he returned the hug, “Echo! Holy shit! What in the hell are you doin’ here-...” McCree then re-remembered the reason why only McCree and Dr. Liao were the only ones that knew about Echo.

She nodded and knelt down to listen. She did not have supernatural hearing or anything like that but she did have good hearing from the training she did with Joel. It was the easiest way to stay alive if you could tell if the creature in the next room was human, clicker, or runner it would dramatically change the best way to go about living past that moment. She closed her eyes and focused on her hearing. She could hear Jesse’s quick breathing, she heard what sounded like a door opening and closing again. Then some crying and a bit of laughter. Like a hyena laugh where a laugh was not quiet what it actually was but it was the closest thing she could compare it too. 

“There are a group of small …creatures running around. I don’t hear anyone else but I heard a door close so I think the person who screamed might have gotten away. I don’t know if they have weapons or what they are but they are small. Like about three feet tall or so. They are down by the stairs in the next corridor.” She looked up at their hallway. This apartment seemed to have an identical layout. The vending machines where nearby.

“I think they are near the vending machines down stairs.” She looked at McCree ready to follow him down the steps.

    Of course there had to be multiple creatures. McCree felt his hand subconsciously tighten around Peacekeeper as he heard Ellie describe their location. That was a huge plus of having someone who came from a world filled with zombies: their survival instincts were through the roof. Granted McCree’s weren’t half bad either...but Ellie had some keen fuckin’ hearing.”

    McCree nodded his head and whispered, “Right...why in the ‘ell are they in the city?”

     McCree slowly moved out of the apartment and took his time moving; he didn’t want to alert the little shits that people were on their way. It took a minute or so for McCree to get a visual on the creatures...and he didn’t know what in the hell he was lookin’ at: they were bipedal for sure but...their arms were freakishly long and they were grabbin’ at the vending machine to try and get the snacks inside.

    “Sadly it does not.” He chuckled softly at he let McCree hold onto his wrists. He still felt uncertain about everything, but he needed time to get accustomed to it, he was certain about that. 

    And as long as he was with Jesse he knew he would be fine. He always was when he was involved.

    A small smile formed on his lips at the cowboys sudden realization of everything. He could see the hope in his eyes and it made his heart flutter just like it had when they were younger, when he had given him the hope of a better life that was only cut short because of his fathers meddling.

    “Yes….I do believe that it means that I still love you Jesse. That I always have but let too many things come between us.”

    Seeing that smile and the words that fell from Hanzo’s lips, McCree’s entire world seemed to slow again. Was this really happening? Did...did Hanzo say those words? Something in the pit of his stomach lurched but not in the same sensation as the Hanahaki disease, this lurch was-

     “...love? ...ya...ya still love me H-Hanny?” McCree’s voice started to crack as he felt his throat tighten and tears started to fall down his face.

    There was no point in lying to himself at this point: there was fear when he first started to vomit those petals...fear that thanks to McCree stupid mouth that Hanzo had lost his love for him. It’s what he would’ve deserved after all: he kept on pushing Hanzo without thinking about it....but....but that wasn’t true apparently. Hanzo Shimada still loved him.

Ellie sighed at his face. She bit back her own snide remark. She knew it was not new but she had to say it. He was her best friend here in wonderland. She continued to look at him until he settled and apologized. She down down near him doing her best to keep her voice even

“Well what the fuck do you want me to say, fuck you? Sucks to be you?  Nope sorry buddy you got a ticket on the sappy train so buckle the fuck up. Sure it is not original but you don’t seem to listen to it. I know you are angry, upset, depressed, a whole mixed bag of not good ..” She winced, so much for keeping her snide remark down. She took a breath to keep her voice even.  

“I’m not gonna’ sit here and pretend I know what you are going through because I truly don’t at least no where near to this degree, however, you thinking that it will never happen…Nope can’t go along with that. You and Hanzo are not in a situation where it is settled in the sand you are at the top of the mountain unsure of hoe you are going to get down again but one way or another it will change.” She sighed trying to keep her tone even. She did not want to sound ad or angry or upset she needed to keep her tone even and gentle. Well as gentle as she could be. “Also yes I forgive you.” She added after a moment a slight smile on her face.

    Ellie sting of bullshit caused McCree’s once calm state to once again become agitated. This is not something that he needed right now.

    Glaring at Ellie, “And I didn’t fuckin’ ask you to come over, now did I? I’m not askin’ you to do anything. And you’re right: you don’t know what I’m goin’ through. You don’t know Hanzo like I do and you sure as hell don’t know what it’s for someone to act like and say that they wanna be with you and then order you to leave their apartment.” McCree did not return Ellie’s smile.

     This was a dangerous mood for McCree to be in right now and the alcohol that was coasting in his system was making him more volatile. He hated being like this; was this karma for leaving the Deadlock Gang?

Ellie went and moved the alcohol out of McCree’s reach as he threw up. He was gonna kill himself at this rate then she went over and rubbed his back between his shoulder. She looked at her arm with the tattoo and the large scars underneath it. And the bracelet wrapped around her wrist. 

“Yeah I know. But feelings are like a wound if you do not bandage and clean them well they only get worse. I know WHY you have it and you have the right to feel this way but y-you should have fucking told me. Let me help you.”She tried to keep her voice steady but it broke as she felt tears in her eyes. Her voice going quieter as she spoke the last sentence. 

Ellie felt truly helpless and a bit pissed off. This was not something that she could easily fight. Here was her friend, sick, and all she could do was be here for him. This wasn’t something she could fix by beating it up. And well punching Hanzo would not really fix it either. Though it might make her feel a bit better,… no she would feel guilty afterwards. She shook her head getting the thought out.  The pain McCree was going through was something completely different from what she had experienced. Though if there was one thing Ellie understood it was feeling abandoned. she wondered how much McCree felt like that, but she did not ask. Instead she just rubbed his back and did her best to keep the tears off her face. This was not about her.

     Hearing Ellie talk about feelings and it acting like a wound wasn’t helping his stomach or his mood. He knew that feelings if they weren’t in check would just hurt him more in the end...but who said that he didn’t deserve the pain...

    McCree couldn’t help the sneer that formed on his face, “And ya ain’t tellin’ me somethin’ I didn’t already know!”

    McCree took a second to calm himself, which was certainly a task due to his drinking, his emotions being all outta wack, and that...someone was there to help him. McCree had flashed of the old Deadlock gang and how much of a family he had before...everything changed and he met Hanzo.

    McCree leaned back on the couch and just stared at the ceiling, “’m...really sorry Ellie...” McCree let the apology hand in the air for moment to allow himself the time to think about what to say next...

    Hanzo glanced away from McCree after he apologized unable to look him in the eye. He still felt so ashamed that he had been so foolish and he couldn’t face the loving words the cowboy spoke. He didn’t deserve them. He deserved to be hated, but yet here he was, still loved so much by this man. 

    Hearing him suddenly go into a coughing fit reminded him of the pain he was suffering because of him. He closed his eyes tight, curing himself for being the cause of his suffering. If only McCree had moved on so he alone would have suffered but no. If there was anything to go on based on their fating marks, it was that McCree would never stop loving him and that thought itself brought tears to the archers eyes. 

    The need to cough was back, but Hanzo refused to give in, not when he was already showing the man he loved his weaker side by letting the tears fall slightly as he tried to brush them away. He couldn’t lie to him though, lying and telling him he wasn’t affected would be more harm than good. He was already trying to clean up the mess he had started.

    “I am….it’s how I knew you were sick with it too….or hoped you wouldn’t be sick with it.”

    McCree couldn’t help the small smile that formed on his face, it wasn’t entirely warm however, “Well, I guess the Hanahaki disease doesn’t really factor what we want, huh?” McCree  squeezed his hold on Hanzo’s wrist.

    McCree didn’t really know how to continue the subject and his instincts were telling him to just wrap his arms around the other man but something was telling him that the physical contact wouldn’t be helpful right now- wait...what did Hanzo say?

She had first heard about it from work. She had come in earlier that day to several people whispering to themselves in the back room only for them to become silent when they saw her come in. After a few angry stares they blabbed about him coughing at work. Then She had to endure an entire double before she could break down the cowboy’s door. 

“Sorry cowboy but you are just gonna have to saddle up for this.” She said grabbing the bottle from his hand and took a quick swig then put it back were it was. 

“I had to endure an entire double with Gretchen after figuring out 5 minutes into my shift what was happening with you. You are not off the hook.” She plopped into a nearby chair giving him space but not TOO much space. And just starred at him. The benefit of getting used to sitting and waiting for the right time to stick also leans over pretty well in getting information. It never took too long for people to crack under the awkward silence. And McCree was not exactly at his best. She just spoke one question then let it hang in the air as she starred at him.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” 

    The familiar sting of guilt tried to worm its way into his heart but he deftly downed some of the beer to squash the feeling. He didn’t want to feel anything; happiness, sadness, hurt, none of it. All of it needed to go away.

    McCree couldn’t help the hollow chuckle that rattled his chest, “Sorry ‘bout the double and that it was with Gretchen...” there was some remorse in his voice about the sudden double shift that she had to work but there was a part of him that honestly didn’t care.

    McCree heard Ellie’s question and the silence that walked in. McCree felt his mood physically shift in the room as McCree down the rest of the beer in the bottle. Opening another bottle, a buzz wasn’t even happening right now, McCree just stared blankly at Ellie.

    “No one wants to talk about their pain Ellie. That’s it.” McCree accented the end of his statement by take a long drink of his newly opened beer.

    With every drink McCree felt the pain of that night started to ebb away again and the pain in his chest from the petals was almost non-existent. McCree sighed happily as he was finally able to relax...but the petals had another story. Feeling his mouth start to fill with saliva he knew that he was about to vomit. Turning his head to the side he let loose petals that screamed at him to let loose.

    “You don’t have to apologize….it is…understandable.” Hanzo couldn’t look him in the eye as he quickly replied to him, looking away from him as he tried to get his bearings. 

    He had been a fool to just show up without a plan of action, but he had been so worried for the other man. It was obvious that he too was suffering from the disease that plauged him. 

    “Jesse….I need to  tell you something. But first and foremost, I need to apologize to you.” He began, ignoring the small talk he had tried to start. He wanted to get to the point and any second of dilly dallying would be counter productive. “I hurt you without meaning too, I…I never wanted to hurt you the way I did. You’ve suffered because of me and you’re still suffering.”

    That...was not what he thought was going to happen: Hanzo Shimada was apologizing to him. Never in the last couple of days since they had their fight did McCree thing that the other man would be apologizing to him. It felt...strange; the feeling wasn’t entirely good but not entirely bad and McCree didn’t understand why he was feeling this way.

    McCree walked towards Hanzo, his body relaxed, “...thank you Hanny. I...I know that this musn’t’ve been easy for ya and I do appreciate it...and I know that you didn’t wanna hurt me.”
