âwell, thatâs not normally the first drug i get a demand for.â fiona smiled brightly, the joke an attempt to diffuse some of the tension. âyou donât want to shoot straight for something harder like vancomycin?â itâs a fine line between building rapport with a patient and pissing someone off, but fiona walks it well. compassion comes more naturally to her for those she doesnât know as wellâpatients she can care deeply for over the span of a few hours instead of outside friendships which demand a consistent nurturing. gesturing for him to take a seat on the stretcher, she logged into the computer with a quick flourish of her password and pulled up a stool to sit level with him. âwhy donât we start with âhi, iâm fiona. iâll be the nurse taking care of you today. can i grab your vitals and have you start from the beginning?âÂ
reaching for the blood pressure cuff and pulse oximeter, fiona leaned back in a futile attempt to focus on the screen thrust in front of her. âthe problem with google doctoringââ she smiled gently as she affixed the cuff and oximeter before pulling the maroon stethoscope from around her neckâaffixed to it was a little lego chewbacca flashlight keychain she used when assessing pupilary repsonses and she reached to still it before attempting a listen at his lungs. ââis that some symptoms are so vague, they could be anything. i mean, those same symptoms could be the flu, pneumonia, pregnancy, gerd, or almost anythingâbut weâre going to get you checked out, okay?â she patted him on the shoulder reassuringly, before returning to the computer to blow in a quick assessment note.Â
âwhen did you first start noticing these symptoms? and, aside from google, what brought you to anthrax? any recent exposures or contact with chemicals youâre not used to?â sheâd once had two patients brought in at the same time because theyâd lit a flea bomb off in their house and stayed inside. âweâll get a chest x-ray and your lungs sound clear to me, but the doc might have someone from respiratory check you out and see if you need a treatment. any other medical history or do you take any medications?â
âNo thanks. I read online that vancomycin can make your fingernails fall out and thatâs just all kinds of terrifying.â There was a breathless chuckle in his voice, almost as if he tried to sound like he was joking but gave up midway. Casper followed her gesture reluctantly, feeling a lot more comfortable standing up and pacing, but he knew this procedure well enough to know that it would be over much sooner if he played along.Â
âOh, I know who you are. Weâve met. At the grocery store?â Honestly, Casper was used to not really being noticed, but somehow he was sure that Fiona would remember him. Just because small talk at four in the morning in the frozen food section didnât seem to be a natural occurrence even for people who werenât as socially inept. âOne night that big dude who works weekends asked for your loyalty card and said âWow, Fiona. What a nice name.ââ Again, a moment of hesitation followed by immediate regret and a mental note to please, for godâs sake, think before you speak. âNot like Iâm a stalker or anything, I just noticed that. I notice a lot of things, not about you in particular, but just like, in general. You know what? Iâm going to stop talking now,â he rambled, again, rubbing the back of his neck and trying his best to avoid any eye contact at all.Â
Casper narrowed his eyes at her, already feeling like she was trying to bust his story when he was so sure this was what it was. âWell, no chemicals, but anthrax spores can cling to infected wool and I bought this really cool woolen sweater at the thrift shop last week.â Maybe not the most common way to get infected, he supposed, but not something that would be out of the realm of possibilities as House, M.D. had taught him. âI have asthma. And hypertension, hyperthyroidism, a bunch of allergies, generalized anxiety disorder, ADHD. So I take Ritalin for the ADHD, Benadryl for the allergies, Tapazole for the thyroid thing, and beta blockers for the anxiety and hypertension.â A beat of silence, looking up as he tried to wreck his brain for any other things that were wrong with him that have actually been confirmed by a doctor. Just because it seemed like this girl was yet another skeptic who didnât really believe in all the things he had self-diagnosed with. âI think thatâs about it?âÂ
