Comics craft tip! It's a good rule of thumb to avoid this specific arrangement of panels!

It's a layout that will confuse your reader, because it's unclear which panel comes next. You rarely want someone's reading experience to be interrupted trying to figure out which panel they're supposed to be reading. The reverse layout, on the other hand, is no problem.

Is it possible to use composition and lettering to make it clear which panel comes next? Absolutely! Just make sure it's something you're doing on purpose, and remember that compositions are usually better when you're not actively fighting your layout.

#very very good tip #breaking my... break... cause i wanted to think aloud #but i wonder if this is a common beginner mistake because of manga?#cause this is a super popular layout in japanese comics; the only thing is-#japanese is read vertically in manga so this layout makes sense and is easy to follow #so the natural progression would still follow top right to bottom left #but this just does not work in english comics bc we read left to right; hence the confusion #would def take some real clever composition and text bubbling to make this work for english haha #but yeah i wonder if the popularity of manga introduces artists to both layouts enough that they dont really think about why #-boxes are laid out the way they are #or it could just be general beginner mistakes and im thinking to hard lmao; easy to fix either way :3
