Warning: Cursing, mentions of extreme violence, Khaos is kinda a red flag, rain, expensive breakfast, MDNI!!
It had been the full weekend since Khaos had socked your biology professor in the face. Most people had either videos or pictures, which were actively being spread across the student body like wildfire amongst numerous group chats, friend groups, messages.. This clearly wasn’t good for Khaos, especially with how quiet he seemed. He didn’t exactly seem like the type to stand up for himself appropriately, more so the type to snap under pressure and harm those around him. As if he wasn’t already antisocial enough…
Students clamored under the shelter of the school entrance as rain shattered over the ground at lightning speeds, leaving no hooded or protected head to spare. Many wept over the now dampness of their hair and clothes, more complained about the freezing temperatures, others were more confused over the why there was such a shift in weather patterns, from Friday’s warm and sunny evening, to today’s miserable morning.
At least you had an umbrella and a semi-warm coat on you today, starting the new week off with a battering fever would not pose well. Additionally, taking a longer, more deserted route to the school’s entrance proved to be a good decision, as now you could go right through the school gates without anyone asking you for your umbrel—
Oh, Aha, have mercy, you were so close to the school’s entry gates!
Begrudgingly, you turned around and saw a girl with sopping wet lavender hair running awkwardly towards you. One hand was held over her head, which proved to do nothing as her entire damn head of hair was already soaking wet as we have just mentioned, whilst her other hand held down on her skirt as the wind blew.
“Castorice.. didn’t I tell you to start bringing in umbrellas and coats more often?”
Castorice quickly made her way under the head of your umbrella as you made additional space, keeping close by your shoulder as the now pair of you walked at equal paces towards the school doors. Castorice used to be in your advanced level maths class before dropping out and turning to the humanities a few weeks in. She was pretty nice, you guys didn’t talk much unless you had to in pair activities. She had her own friend group, you had yours, plain and simple. But that still didn’t mean you wouldn’t talk to each other, you did have each other’s contacts after all.
“I know, I know.. but the weather has been really good as of late. Then it just.. ugh, classic Castrum weather for you.”
The two of you tapped into the school’s security system using your ID badges as you carefully loaded your umbrella back into your bag. Ah, the hallways of your college was always warmer inside, and it definitely seemed a lot more comforting with the contrasting weather outside.
“Say.. would you like to get coffee with me at the Café before classes start? We still have like half an hour before they do.” Castorice asked gently, drying off her sweater and skirt to the best of her ability. You simply nodded and hummed a ‘yes’ in reply as you both made your way calmly to the school’s cafe.
It was normally quiet in there, but today it was full of students at tables warming their temporarily wrinkled, damp hands against the moderately temperate surfaces of their coffee cups and mugs. It was oddly comforting in a way, seeing everyone bundle themselves up in helpless little groups to combat the cold.
Alas, you and Castorice made it to two individual free Kiosks and tapped into your orders and a free table number.
“I got a cup of hot cocoa with marshmallows and a side of tea biscuits. You?”
“I just ordered and plain coffee and a lemon loaf. Nothing too special, I’m going broke though. I don’t get paid til next week..”
The two of you finally found your corresponding table number and sat down, sitting on opposite sides to one another, placing your bags on each corner near a wall beside you. You were slightly worried for Castorice’s books and files in her handbag, but upon closer inspection, her handbag was thankfully zipped right up,
“Did you hear what happened with Khaos and his teacher on Friday? Apparently he knocked him out cold after he was caught disturbing a lesson.”
Disturbing a lesson, huh? So that’s how people are making it out to be.
“I was in his lesson, actually. Our teacher called on him mid lesson to answer some question from our workbook. He didn’t know it and the teacher got mad at him. Then, the teacher went right up to his desk all up in his face and took his notebook from his desk. He was just doodling something random but the teacher saw it as the bane of all passing grades’ existence and basically made fun of him in front of everyone.”
Taking a deep breath in, you continued on your rant,
“Then, everyone started laughing at him and giving him dirty looks and I mean Khaos is like this really quiet, kinda closed off guy, and this clearly did not sit well with him. So, he did what he thought was the most logical thing to do, and, uh.. y’know punched our teacher in the face. Whole class went crazy and everyone kinda just took it as an opportunity to leave early..”
Castorice’s eyes stayed widened and her mouth slightly agape as she presumably took your coke rant all in. She let out a slight huff and sigh, blinking back a few times and shaking her head.
“..Wow. Um. I guess it’s a little different to what other people were saying?.. Still, doesn’t seem too out of character for Khaos.”
Now hold on. Not out of character for Khaos? Sure, to the naked eye he seems a little haywire in the head, but surely it’s not that obvious he has some form of violent tendencies going on in his mind..
“What do you mean not out of character, Castorice?” You asked as politely as you could. It wasn’t that you were angry at Castorice or offended on Khaos’ behalf, it was genuine curiosity if anything. Did Castorice know something you didn’t?
“Well.. it’s quite hard to put. But to sum it up, me, him, Phainon, and Khaslana used to attend Okhema High together before college. Khaos and Phainon were in my year, Khaslana was in the year above us.”
As if on cue, a waiter came and delivered your orders to your table with a slight bow. The pair of you nodded in courtesy as you both took your respective orders. Castorice took a quick, careful sip of her cutely decorated hot chocolate before continuing,
“Phainon and I were pretty close, but Khaos was really protective over him. He was his older brother after all. But understand, Phainon is the type of guy who’s overly nice to everyone no matter who they are.”
Her face soured as she spoke up again,
“..But I’m sure, as you can imagine, not everyone in high school are exactly peachy and friendly..”
Castorice looked down at her mug with a solemn smile,
“..Phainon was bullied as a result. A group of guys took his kindness towards a girl for flirting, rather than basic courtesy and human decency. Said girl was actually the girlfriend of one of these guys, so they really took it the wrong way. Phainon started getting harassed by the group until Khaos came along and began threatening them. He said he knew their addresses, their families, and that he’d murder every single one of them if they didn’t leave his brother alone.”
It took you a few moments to really process everything Castorice had just said. You were aware Khaos had an older brother who was now attending Okhema College in his second year, but a younger one? One that he cares for the most? To the extent where’d he’d threaten the lives of others and their loved ones to protect him??
“What happened after that? Was he expelled?”
“Yes. After making verbal threats against the boys, whom did not take them seriously at first, he stole a bunch of chemical acids and strong ammonia solutions from a nearby chemistry lab and proceeded to dump the contents on whichever few of the boys he got to first.”
The shock on your face was evident as Castorice giggled awkwardly, yet grimly. Relaxing your eyebrows and lips slightly, you let her carry on.
“Since the chemicals he had mixed with the ammonia were reactants in a fast chemical process, the boys attacked were immediately met with horrible burns and bleeding.. As a result, Khaos was expelled indefinitely from the school and had charges pressed against him by the families of those guys. However, Khaslana somehow managed to convince all parties to drop their charges, and Khaos only got out with multiple restraining orders and a ban from ever stepping foot on Okhema High’s premises again, including the connected College—“
“—Which is why he now attends Kremnos College with us.. I always wondered why he wouldn’t go to the same college as his older brother and instead choose one so far..”
Castorice nodded once more, taking another sip of her now half full cup of hot chocolate. Reminding you of your own beverage, you took a sip of your own coffee, the bitter taste spreading across your mouth like a blanket. Thankfully, it hadn’t had much time to cool down as you and Castorice talked, the warmth comforted you to your core.
“..You should still be wary of Khaos.”
Your eyebrows re-furrowed as you glanced up at Castorice from the head of your mug.
“I-I get why.. but he seems nice…ish..?”
Castorice shook her head with a sympathetic look on her face. Her eyes showed pity as her lips pointed out in a very faint pout.
“Please don’t get me wrong. He is indeed nice, it’s just that.. he’s dangerous, he’s displayed his strength already more than once. He isn’t the type to hesitate using violence if he deems it necessary, you saw it yourself on Friday after all. I only want to look out for you, and if you want to be friends with him, I won’t stop you,”
She leans in and looks you dead in the eyes,
“but be careful of him. You don’t know what type of person he truly is when you remove his family from his life.”
Your eyes stayed locked onto each other’s. Her eyes were full of genuine concern and care. Yours were filled with hesitance and internal conflict. Her eyes were the first to break away from yours as she turned to her biscuits, and you could only do the same with your soft lemon loaf.
Eventually, you had both finished your food and talked about something completely different to pass the time before classes begun, but it was clear that the weight of the previous conversation was still there, leaning on the two of you, waiting to crush.
Luckily, before things got too awkward, the bell rang for the first lesson of the day, with students already moving out from the Café either alone or with friends. You and Castorice both got up from your seats and placed your dirty cups and plates on a nearby collection table, before heading on out together.
You grimaced slightly as you glanced at your timetable, “Biology..”
Castorice let out a soft shudder at your words, giving you a look that teetered on frantic.
“Ahem, well, at least you’ll be able to figure out if Khaos got into too much trouble or not. I’ll see you later, I’ve got English.”
You waved her goodbye as she went the opposite way to the humanities block. Turning on your heels, deep fear, feeling heavy, suddenly implanted itself into your chest. What if Khaos really is bad news? The type to throw you to dross if you get in his way? What if he really is dangerous?
Questions, answers, fear.. all possibilities infested in your mind at the same time. Your legs walked on their own as your head stayed fixated on the ground, your body moving with ease somehow as people walked past in the opposite direction. Your brain felt numb, your eyes felt heavy. Not to the point where you felt like you’d pass out, of course not. You just ate breakfast. But as if..
The next hallway was empty. Silent. Where did everyone go?
Continuing your pace, you walked to the corner leading to the next hallway down. You’re not too late, you still have a few minutes before it’s considered late.
And then, just as you turned the corner, you discreetly peered over your shoulder behind you.
Khaos was there, leaning against a side wall looking at you with his uncovered eye. His head was tilted slightly, showing the bones of his jawline, the softness of his cheek, but too the bandages that covered his neck.
Shit! Walk, walk, walk! But don’t walk too fast! Then it’ll definitely be obvious you’re trying to avoid him. Quickly now, you’re almost ther—!
Your blood ran cold as you heard his voice, now sounding to be much closer to you. You’re definitely going to develop some form of high blood pressure in your 50s at this rate. Your mind was now moving on its own cogs, as Khaos subtly boxed you in against a wall, not pinning you to it, just gently maneuvering you to stand against it next to him.
You’re going to shit your pants.
“K-Khaos. How’re you doi—“
“Why were you talking to her.”
How did he even know you and Castorice were together this morning..? Was he spying on you two?
“I don’t know what you mean..”
“Yes you do.” He shifted along the wall to his side to face you, you could only look at him from the corner of your eye.
“..Answer me. Why were you with her.” His tone was even lower than it usually was, bless his vocal cords. There was almost something akin to a shadow within him, a cursed spirit speaking for him. His gravelly voice shook you to your core nonetheless, he sounds pissed..
“S-she needed help in the rain.. she didn’t bring an umbrella today and saw that I had one so I—“
“—In the cafe.” He cut through with an even more irritated voice, sounding all the more impatient as time went on. So he was spying on you.
You gulped briefly, your heart was pounding against your ribs, threatening to burst free and all over Khaos’ chest. At least since you’d be dead, you wouldn’t have to witness him staring down at you with that scary ass expression of his, or watch him stomp the shit out of your still live beating organ on the floor.
“She told me about your time a-at Okhema High.. how you were expelled because you protected your younger brother Phainon from a group of bullies.”
That wasn’t exactly how she said it. Well it was. But you could tell Castorice didn’t intend to paint Khaos in this positive light, not wanting to make him out to be this beacon of preservation and care.
But to be honest, that’s sort of how you saw him.
Khaos looked away for a moment, his eye not even showing a hint of whatever was crossing his mind. His tongue pointed out to lick his chapped lips gently, before biting them slightly.
“So that’s how you see it.”
He hummed in thought, nodding to himself as he now looked forwards towards the wall in front of him. A painting hung on there, it was an old style painting of a much older generation of students. There were two in the middle. A man of medium stature with white hair and a serious expression, and a woman of an ever so slightly shorter height, hair as pink as the winter’s evening sunset. Her expression was much more cheerful and energetic, she seemed charismatic.
“Don’t talk to her again.”
He looked at you with a frank look on his face.
Okay sure, Khaos is scary. He looks like he could snap the average person in half with those thick thighs of his alone. Not to mention seeming like the type to murder someone and leave no traces. But you’re not going to stop talking to one of your close friends for someone you barely know, let alone someone who probably doesn’t even like you.
“I’m not going to avoid one of my close friends for you Khaos.” Your tone was much more even now, more levelled, less imbalanced and bumpy with nerves. You straightened up a bit against the wall as you looked at him with a more determined, confident look on your face. He raised an eyebrow at this, taking in your newly profound conviction with a nonchalant gaze.
“..Fine. Keep talking to her. But just know, she has a bias against me, she’ll say anything to make me look bad because she’s scared. I don’t blame her. She was always the type to watch.”
“And isn’t that what you were doing to me and her this morning? Watching us? Stalking us? Don’t be a hypocrite now. I know you were there watching us in that cafe.”
“And so what if I was?.. How do I know you won’t just spread rumours about me and have me kicked out of yet another school?”
“You’ll just get your dear older brother Khaslana to help, won’t you?”
You pushed off the wall and turned to the door into your class’s main hallway, looking back one last time at him, your gaze cynical and suddenly much colder. It was as if someone, something was speaking for you. With you. Be it impatience or fear, you didn’t know.
“We have Bio now, you don’t wanna be late.”
Just as you were about to start walking again, Khaos delicately grabbed your shoulder, the bone of his fingers pressing mildly against you,
“..I’m.. sor— I’m not allowed to attend any lessons with teachers right now. I have to stay in a secluded area once classes officially start for the day.”
You gently nudged his hand off your shoulder as you stared at him from your height,
“I can give you my notes for each lesson you miss. How long will you be secluded for?”
“Two weeks. You can meet me outside near the giant tree out back after each lesson.”
“Don’t you want my number? So I can give you the notes more readily?”
“..I don’t have enough cloud storage.”
That’s not exactly a reason, but ok. Not wanting to make the reservations you were feeling too obvious, you smiled inwardly and agreed hastily. Then, before he could get anything else out, you turned on your heel and immediately booked it for the doors as casually as you could. You didn’t hear anything else after that, no calls or beckons. But you still felt his eye on you, even through the tiny gap of the window on the door. Seriously, your back is starting to look like Swiss cheese with him always burning holes through it.
Biology was a drag to say the least. For starters, the teacher from Friday wasn’t in due to a “family emergency”. Everyone called bullshit, why would they even use that excuse on the class that had literally witnessed everything? It was beyond you why nobody had to write any statements, either. Additionally, everyone was forced to move to different areas of the room to avoid the “passing of disingenuous information”. The people sat next to you were nice for the most part, but they were the type to really pay attention during class, so they didn’t talk much unless it was discuss subject related topics.
By the end of the lesson however, you had a pretty good spread of what had been taught in the lesson. Thankfully it wasn’t too hard to digest for Khaos, he only really needed your notes anyways, no need for extra guidance, just common sense.
Since you had moved desks to the opposite corner of the room, the front entrance of the school was no longer visible to you. Instead, you could now get a sneaky glance at the back end of the main entrance round the corner, where you and Castorice had been walking in through. The tree Khaos wanted to meet you at was pretty close by anyways, but catching a glimpse of him was difficult due to the awkward angle of the window frame and distance. You packed up your things and began heading for the designated spot Khaos was waiting for you at.
True to his word, he was there, leaning against the wood of the tree not facing you, holding something indiscernible in his hand. Upon closer inspection however..
His voice was croaky as he tried speaking, which proved to be futile as he immediately starting going into another coughing fit yet again, turning his back on you and holding the tree with his other hand for dear life.
He turned back and cleared his throat a few times, dropping the cigarette on the grass with a small sizzle. His face was puffier, making his already round cheeks even chubbier. It was a little cute silly to look at. Especially for a guy of his size and demeanour.
“Don’t.. creep up on me like that next time. Or ever again for that matter. Scared the shit out of me..”
You rolled your eyes playfully, getting your notebook and pen out,
“Don’t smoke on school grounds then. Actually, that’s a really useless piece of advice. I saw people vaping along the Econ block. Anyways,”
You turned to today’s page of your notebook, where notes on DNA semi-conservative replication were written in concise sentences and chains.
“Today we just did some work on DNA replication using DNA Polymerse. Last lesson we worked on DNA replication via transcription and translation if you remember. Translation used RNA Polymerase if you remember correctly.”
You didn’t realise you had begun to go on a bit of a tangent as you carried on speaking, teaching him. It was the exact opposite of what you wanted to do, but for some reason, talking to Khaos about what you had studied made you feel.. good. It was like he was some outlet for your learning.
“..And then, DNA Polymerase joins each adjacent complementary nucleotide together via a condensation reaction to form phosphodiester bonds between them. This creates a new strand which is then used to twist with the DNA template strand to reform the double helix shape. Hence why it’s called Semi-Conservative replication. ‘Semi’ meaning half new data, and ‘Conservative’ meaning half old data from to old DNA template strand.”
You finally looked up from your notebook, only to find Khaos leaning against the tree with the top of his head. He had this dopey, soft look on his face, as if he had been dreaming whilst you were talking.
“So.. RNA polymerase isn’t used here?..”
“Nope! Because RNA polymerase is used to read each base pairing of other exon triplet codes along the DNA template strand to produce a complementary RNA strand by using the DNA’s complementary ribonucleotides.”
Honestly, you should’ve picked up that Khaos hadn’t been paying any attention to you all throughout your mini talk. Asking such an obvious question like that? But in that moment it had truly seemed like he was engaged. He was a good listener most of the time after all.
“Well.. thank you, [Name].. I really um, appreciated this.”
He stared awkwardly at the ground for a minute, scratching his head with his fingers to avoid eye contact.
“Do you wanna do this more often? You mentioned that you’d be off all Bio lessons for the next two weeks.”
Khaos’ cheeks reddened slightly, but it wasn’t at all obvious from where you were standing. But you could tell he seemed abashed with how quickly he began nodding,
“S-sure, sure.. I can do that— we can do that, yeah.”
He coughed into his palm before looking at you once more, any signs of embarrassment or flush disappearing from his face in an instant. Not that you had noticed anyways.
“You seem to enjoy this topic..”
“It’s pretty easy once you start to understand it. Just break down the words like I do, it becomes way easier that way.”
He nodded and gave you a directory look,
“Don’t you have another lesson soon? Chemistry?”
Your eyes widened slightly as you checked the time on your phone. 10:54. Had you really been yapping his poor ears off for half an hour?? Now it was your turn to be ashamed.
“O-oh shit, yeah I do. I’ll just see you tomorrow then. Same spot?”
“Fine by me. Go on, you don’t wanna miss out on those experiments..”
“By the way, I’m sorry for earlier. I was stressed. Hope I didn’t offend you.” You walked backwards hurriedly, not sparing a second to hear his response as you were already in such a rush. You walked along the footpath directing you towards the doors back into the school, throwing him a quick wave to him as you did so.
It felt good to teach someone something you had just learnt. Especially if it made no sense to others. But going off on a tangent like that.. Yeah, maybe full time teaching isn’t too great of a career path.
“Fraternising with someone you know shouldn’t get involved with? Tsk tsk... I thought we already had this conversation numerous times..”
