"Fire is cleansing light, the rising sun, the flooding warmth of an exciting new day...it represents the spark of life and, to some, the spark of creativity, the source of art." So writes David in his newly published book, So Far, a reflective and lavishly photographed journey of his life as an artist, designer, father, adventurer and maker.
Sola was originally designed as part of our Icarus collection, which was purchased by the Pompidou Centre. We've since re-designed it to be a bamboo kitset, which we call the Seed System process. So yes, while it does look quite complex...with a bit of time, this dramatic feature light is ready for you to make at home!
Here Marion makes a Reed light in our workshop, located in a small village in New Zealand. All our products are designed, constructed and packaged under this roof.
Ethereal, weightless. This is what we seek to achieve in our Cloud lights. Luminous could we another quality that we'd add to that list.

Bleux is an Australian graphics company that specialises in patterning for unusual surface applications - think concrete, glass, resin and echo panel, not to mention more traditional surfaces such as wallpaper and tiling. They've recently produced a range in collaboration with us here at David Trubridge. The results, including this lovely vertical pattern Sandlines, zing with freshness and vitality.
If you're looking for a wooden light that is sustainable and contemporary to boot, meet our Coral light. We make it from bamboo (that's from a renewably farmed plantation), and as a kitset product, its shipping freight is greatly reduced when compared to its equivalent assembled product.
David Trubridge has always been an unusual designer. As a young man he sold everything and took his family off on a sailing adventure across the world, finally settling in New Zealand. This is one of the shots whilst out at sea; the colours have an illuminating quality, similar to that of our lighting collection.
This Radisson Hotel in Sweden is glittering with our Coral and Floral lights. Nice to think of our products being enjoyed on the other side of the world!
This evocative shot was taken on a river not far from our studio. It had been raining heavily so we were relieved to see the floods weren't too high. This Hinaki light, made from bamboo, is a kitset product that can be made by you at home. Or, for that matter, by a river...

This bamboo light by David Trubridge is a Basket of Knowledge. It is inspired by the Maori creation myth where the gods gave humans three baskets of exactly that - knowledge - to help them instil balance between the natural, spiritual and rational worlds. This is an impressive assembled feature light that makes a statement in any space.
The David Trubridge Lighting Collection offers a range of feature pendants and shades to add warmth and ambience to a space. All bamboo lights are made from sustainably sourced bamboo which is farmed primarily as a food source.
We never tire of beautiful interiors. These bamboo Koura lights work well with high ceilings an in this shot, their intricate patterning forms a lovely contrast to the room's simple, clean lines.
Bachs are part of the New Zealand psyche - a place to escape to, relax in and recharge. A humble abode north of Hawke's Bay, David's bach is contemporary and light, designed and built by himself.
It's always lovely to see the different environments our products find themselves in. One would imagine that this Coral light will be surrounded by a bright, airy interior that's perfect for a summer's day.

There's something about a boat that sings adventure, romance and escapism (even though sailing itself is very hard work at times). David Trubridge spent many years at sea, sailing with his young family across the world. With a journey that spanned the UK to New Zealand, it was a trip that shaped many of his design principles and ideas that are integral to his lighting and furniture collections.
Body Raft was the piece which launched David's career onto an international stage. Its design rights were purchased by Italian company Cappellini in 2002.
