As much as I love Zenith as a character, as insane as I am about him sometimes, as much as I wish I could romance him, on some level I still don't understand his companion storyline. How the heck can he be leader of the opposition on Balmorra when he's not even living on Balmorra? How does that even work? Surely, not living on Balmorra (and spending so much of his time helping the Consular on missions, if you choose to bring him along) would make him very weak and ineffective as a politician? Surely there's a lot of stuff that is required for an opposition leader to do that would be very difficult to do if he's not actually there in person?
Am I missing something here? Does his storyline make sense to everybody else? If anyone thinks this makes sense I would love to hear your explanation because I just don't get it.
What's most frustrating to me is that this would've been so easy to fix. It's more or less stated outright that Tai Cordan sends Zenith away from Balmorra because he's too much of a loose cannon to have in his government, right? And because although he was instrumental in freeing the planet, he still committed some serious crimes. So sending him away from Balmorra was the best compromise. It would've been so easy and made so much more sense to have Zenith's companion story be about him learning how to be a diplomat and politician rather than just a warrior. Have the Consular take him under their wing and teach him how to actually work with people when duking it out on the battlefield isn't an option.
Here's a line from a fanfic I'll probably never finish writing:
"Do you want to benefit Balmorra, Zenith? Then go out there and prove you know how to do more than blow things up." - Tai Cordan
Sure, that theme is present in his storyline, but it doesn't quite work for me when the events of his storyline make so little sense to me. It would've made so much more sense to have him pursue political goals offworld. Have him be instrumental in securing some diplomatic victory or other on Balmorra's behalf. Balmorra does join the Republic as a result of the Consular's actions after all - surely there would've been a lot of potential plotlines there that would've made more sense for Zenith to be a part of than trying to win an election on a planet he's no longer living on. Maybe have him end up as Balmorra's official ambassador to the Republic, and/or to the Rift Alliance, which he basically already is anyway. The writers could've focused on that instead of the opposition leader thing. I want the characters I love to have storylines that make sense, dammit!
