There are many different variations by many different people telling you this is the right way or this what works best. When you find what works best for you, yourself; experiment with each variation and take note of what works best for you! I personally like my barbell shrugs with a deep stretch then raising the barbell trying to reach my ears with a strong squeeze at the top movement then slowly letting the weight come to a dead hang, then repeating. This is what works best for me. Not saying is the best way, just elaborating on what works best for my body!
