"As is my right as your Maker. As someone who cares for you," It bothered him that she would carry this burden alone for the sake of not bothering them. If she would do it for this, what else would she try to shoulder alone. "It is not some small, silly thing that you can not sleep for these reasons you describe. Whilst I do not condone hiding things from ones family, from your sisters, I understand the urge. I would never force you to tell them. So if you will not bother them with such things, I beg you to bother me. It will be no bother at all. Hmm?" After a moment he circled round behind her, giving her a light nudge to get her moving in the direction on the kitchen. "I think some coco is needed,"
Emi wanted to bite back in that reactive sort of manner that she nearly always did, but she forcibly bit her tongue in this instance. Henri was being kind, as he always was, and he was more than right to speak as he did. Her gaze never left his as he reasoned with her, like she was frozen in the moment. Not even a needless breath passed through her until he stilled to silence of his own. "If you're sure," she replied softly, finding herself rather unable to say much more on the subject at present. Because, truly, how could she argue against that?
She moved forward at his gentle prompting, a quiet bit of laughter escaping her. "So you are intent on keeping me company then?" She mused, casting him a playful sort of glance as she fell in step with Henri on the way to the kitchen.
He sighed before continuing on down the stairs. "I will not lie to you Emi, I do not think the danger has passed completely. But it will not be here forever," Stepping in front of her he rested his hands on her elbows to get her to stop pacing, "Why did you not tell me you haven't been sleeping?"
"Even if it isn't forever, it certainly could be the case for a long..." Emi trailed off as Henri places his hands on her elbows, stopping in her tracks and looking up at him in a nearly defeated way. "I didn't see the point in bothering anyone with something so silly. You know as well as I do that if I even breathed a word of it to Luciana or Natalia that they would take it upon themselves to stay awake with me or to be my keepers. And you..." She offered him a small smile and a shrug. "I gathered you would be much the same."

"Whatever are you doing up at such an hour?"
Emi didnāt exactly flinch at the sound of Henriās voice as much as dart her eyes towards his direction to ensure he was actually there. āHavenāt been able to sleep since that party business⦠It reminded me a bit too much of what happened to Natalia a few months ago.ā She turned to properly face her maker then, as if measuring his expression. āDo you think this is a new reality for us? Living in fear?ā
She hadn't promised and really he knew she wouldn't. Not even for him. It was who she was. He gave the hand she'd entwined with his a squeeze. A silent show that he understood. She'd always fight for the people she loved. Even if it put her in unimaginable danger. It scared him but that wasn't a new feeling. It had already been there from the moment he'd realised Morpheus was back in town.
He turned his head to look at her when she laughed. Normally such a joyful sound. One that often made him smile. How different this moment was from those times. When he sensed the shift in it, when it sounded like she was hoovering on the edge of crying again he gave her hand another squeeze. Her words were true enough. Enzo had almost died. Again. It was the second time in less than a year that he'd come so close to dying. To leaving Emi. The man seemed hell bent on stepping in even if it meant getting himself injured. Which he understood of course. The love that Enzo had for her, he understood why he'd go to such length to protect her. And if he kept going, one of these days they wouldn't get so lucky. Wouldn't be able to save him in time. Looking at the pain in Emi's eyes he knew he'd do anything to stop her fear becoming a reality. That he'd do anything to save Enzo for her. Anything. Even sacrificing himself. She'd recover from that loss eventually he was sure. But he knew she'd never recover from loosing Enzo.
Reaching over he wiped away a stray tear. "Not today he won't, and hopefully not tomorrow. If that's how you feel Emi, then relish in the time you have. And maybe buy him some armour,"
Emi didn't move away from Erebus as he reached out to touch her, but she found herself staring at him wordlessly all the same. He was so simplistic in his response, as if that was the only answer, or as if there was any edge of levity in it either. And that hurt on some level. Even if she knew it was far from his intent to amplify her pain, he had in a way. Reminded her that it was a fear founded in truth, and to add to it that she should make the most of what time she was given... But she didn't want some time, she didn't want a finite list of tomorrows. She wanted forever. She wanted Enzo to be her eternity.
Eventually she did force herself to sit up in the bed, removing her hand from Erebus' in favor of hugging her knees to her chest. She was so caught up in the effort of forcing herself to breathe steadily, even if it was a needless action. She wanted to feel steady, instead of set adrift. But everything made her feel that way right now. Enzo's impending death, Andre's confoundingly painful distance, and Sage's suffering in the wake of it... the danger they were all in now. It felt like the beginning of the end, try as she may to run from it. Inevitability was a hard pill to swallow.
"I was deluding myself for so very long into thinking that the only people who could occupy my heart in this way were my sisters. And yet you all have settled into my soul, laced yourselves in the fabric of my being so that I couldn't possibly exist without you. Any of you," Emi said after awhile, her voice soft and achingly fragile in her welling emotion. "I can't lose anyone. I won't... I won't let them take my family from me." She turned her head back to look at Erebus, her lower lip trembling again as she did. Because surely he knew that she loved him that much. That it was more than just Enzo. "You all are my everything. You understand that, don't you--how hard it is to watch the ones you love more than your own self be left in harm's way? That's why I can't promise anything Erebus... because I would die for each of you. To save you, or in my loss of you if I couldn't. That is the love I feel, these are its fears. They consume my mind... It's all I know."

Sage smiled at that. He couldnāt remember specifically why he knew them. Or why they specifically touched him in such an oddly intimate way. āMusic isā¦ā he sighed a little. āHealing. Isnāt it?ā
At seeing her pain, Sage tugged her against him, rubbing her arms gently. āMy darling, Emilia.ā He kissed her head. āYou would not know the first thing about being cruel. Or hurting anyone.ā He paused there. Because he actually could see her hurting someone who deserved hurting. āWell. You know what I mean. And knowing what i know of Enzo. He wouldnāt love you this much if you were not deserving of it.ā
Sage sighed deeply. āIāve loved in such a way once.ā He said, letting a heavy pause settle between them. Not sure he wanted to speak about it. Even to Emilia. Who he trusted with his heart. As mangled as it was. He pet her hair, gently running his fingers through it. āBut you know that, donāt you? Kieran. My one great love. Oh would he relish in hearing me say that.ā He bit his lip, as a rather painful reminder of what heād done. āI left him to the claws of death⦠with the one promise I wasnāt going to marry him. And I worry that he truly believed that.ā
Emilia's lips tugged into a sad sort of smile as she nodded. "It can be."
She melted against Sage's chest, clinging to him as if he was the only truth she could hold onto then. Maybe he was. He knew her well, could see the soul of her even when she found herself too close to do so. His words made her lower lip tremble a bit with the threat of oncoming tears. "He loves me even when I'm hurtful," she corrected softly, at least granting Sage the credit that Enzo did find her deserving if nothing else. "I only wish I was better for him... or less complicated maybe."
Emi didn't dare speak for that initial instance, merely pulling Sage closer to her, like she could shelter him from the true weight of that sadness in doing so. It played so heavily on his heart even now. And, really, how could it not? He knew the reality of her greatest fear, and lived it actively, suffered still. She tucked her head into his neck, shaking it even still. She wanted to say that Kieran knew then, or that he would know now. But it felt cruel, not within her giving in the least. "I'm sorry... I'm sorry that you have to carry that alone," she whispered.
Andre wanted to curl away from her. Feeling so entirely wretched. He just wanted to die. Over and over again. Until this taint went away. If it ever went away.
He caught onto her arm, the one she held around him. It was the only thing tethering him now. The memories. So many painful and awful memories. Erebus coming to him. Distraught. He hadn't wanted to believe it. He hated himself for not believing immediately. As Erebus needed him too.
"There were two..." He gasped. "Two brothers. Two torture chambers. Two...there has always been two. And...I couldn't. I only had time for one...and Erebus. He was coming for us. How could I leave Erebus there?" He fell then, into utter despair. "I'm so sorry..."
The sheer amount of energy it would take to pull away from her, he just didn't have. "Let me make it right...I have to. I have to make him go away. To keep you all safe. I can't...please."
Emi's hold only tightened on Andre as he spoke, as he cried. And it pieced together slowly in her mind precisely what he was confessing. It made perfect sense in a way, that Andre should think himself a villain for making an impossible choice. But it was impossible, at least from what little she knew then. She tried to picture if it had been one of her sisters, if she'd been separated, the one chosen while they were left behind. And she couldn't help the shudder that ran through her for Sage's sake, the ache that resounded in her heart then.
But it didn't change her love for Andre. Maybe because it wasn't her, maybe because she could step away from it more in her lack of involvement. Because all that echoed in her heart in the end was how deeply she loved him. And she couldn't leave him alone, not ever. She would be here, to hold him together if she even possibly could.
She hushed him gently, pulling him to curl up against her on the sofa. Her own tears fell then, echoing in the pain pouring forth from her maker. "You don't have to do anything by yourself, Andre... We can find a way to fix this. We will find a way... but please don't let it rest on you alone."
He was still staring at the ceiling when Emi looked at him. "I think we'd sooner borrow some more shackles from Stefan than let you at Morpheus," he commented. He tried to do as she had, wrap it in humour but his tone didn't come out quite right. After a moment he spoke again, finally looking at her, "Promise me you won't try Emi. I can't..." he bit off the rest of his words, not even wanting to say it out loud. That he couldn't face loosing her.
Erebus took in the ring hanging round her neck. He hadn't noticed it before. He felt bad for it. Felt bad too that he hadn't been there for her after, as she said, she'd publicly refused Enzo. She might not be able to see why but he could. "You'll say yes when you're ready," he didn't doubt that she would. It was so obvious how much she loved Enzo. "You just need to do it at your own pace. Don't feel bad for that,"
Emi's brow furrowed a bit at Erebus' words. She could hear his attempted joke in the notion, but like hers it had fallen short of humor. And it left her feeling vaguely like a nuisance in the coming days. "Of course you would," she muttered, falling into herself a bit further then. It wouldn't do any good to be upset with him for such a thing, especially as he meant no harm. And as he cut himself off, she knew precisely what he was feeling. It was the very thing that troubled her most, about all of them really. She couldn't bear the loss of them. Emi reached over to lace her fingers through Erebus' hands. "I know..." But she couldn't bring herself to promise. Even if she didn't intend to run into the fray, if only for the sake of the ones she loved, she knew better than to swear that she wouldn't get involved. Because they didn't know anything right now. And there were certain things that she wouldn't be able to sit idly by for... certain people.
A laugh escaped her then. A small one at first, involuntary and indignant in a way, but then it turned into a proper fit of laughter at the foolishness of it all. They were all in mortal danger, and yet she was caught up about whether or not she should marry the love of her life. It was ridiculous. And it diverted again then as her laughter neared those tears she thought she'd finally done away with. She choked on a near sob before forcing herself to hold her needless breaths in order to steady herself. Emi shook her head then, wiping away the stray tears with her free hand. "He could have died. If Nic and Esme hadn't gotten involved last night, if Sage hadn't gone after that mongrel... Enzo could have died. And I would have had my last real words to him be a refusal of this," she pointed out, her tone sharp against herself. She turned to look at Erebus again, the pain pouring out of her eyes. "It's not a case of readiness. I'll never be ready for him to die, for me to lose him. And he'll die for me at some point, won't he? That's inevitable. I'm his downfall, masked as his greatest love... How fucked is that?"
He didn't reply to that. Because with the way things were likely to go know she was probably right. This had been the opening move in a war that had been a long time. No. He supposed the opening move had been them getting Sage out all those years ago. This was the retaliation. He was under no illusion that this would end quickly or with out consequences.
Emi's question broke his heart a little more. She shouldn't have to be worrying about this. One part of him didn't want her to be unprepared for the scoop of what they were facing. The other didn't want to put weight on her shoulders or deepen her fears. He knew her though. Knew she wouldn't stay out of it. "The only way they'll ever truly be safe is if Morpheus is dead," he said eventually.
He'd been the one to change the subject, to try and lighten it, but he found he couldn't smile at her joke. It would have taken more energy than he had. "So he's your one true love? Hate to break it to you but it sounds like you might be a romantic too. Must run in the family."
Emi sighed deeply, nodding her head too. She'd figured as much, but to have it confirmed felt almost like a defeat. Because she knew nothing really, in the grand scheme of things. And that left her vulnerable and powerless in the coming fight, neither of which she shouldered well--in fact, she resented both quite a bit. But it didn't feel right to go on a tirade about needing information about the past and Morpheus, not when those that knew best were all in such deep pain. She might have asked Wulfe, but he'd yet to resurface from the party.
"If it were possible, I would do it myself... as it stands though, I should doubt that I'd even come close." Emi pulled her chin up a bit to look at Erebus. "I don't know enough, I'm not strong enough. And I wouldn't be let out of anyone's sight to begin with... right?" It was vaguely incased in humor, a mocking of her position in the seethe that she'd never very willingly accepted.
The edge of seriousness in the comments stunned her into a moment of silence. And then she laughed a bit--the sound of it quite hollow and saddened. She pointed to the ring resting alongside her locket, raising a brow at Erebus as if she was challenging his opinion of her. "Hardly the case if I'm the cruel girl refusing his hand publicly." She shifted to lie on her back again, looking up at the ceiling and shaking her head. "I'm a fucking idiot, Erebus, not a romantic," she whispered, curling her arms around herself. "Here I am, running from him... again. And even I can't see why."
Enzo hummed gently to her as she spoke. It made perfect sense that she would worry over Sage. They all did. They all knew something sinister was waiting there. But like Emi, Enzo didn't know how to help him. Or Erebus. Who seemed to be struggling as well. Sighing, he cuddled Emi closer. "I suppose all we can do is remind them we are all family. Regardless of makers. All part of the same seethe. We don't judge or concern ourselves with what's behind us."
She perked up at the mention of the fae, so Enzo went ahead and told her all he knew. To help ease her worries. "Thomas did. Not to me directly. He was telling Milo. The next night? Maybe. He appeared at the front door and Thomas and Luci let him in. I don't think Stefan knows anything about it. Or him really. I certainly don't. From what I understand he's been here every night."
Enzo frowned at her explanation. "But I would never leave you, Emi love. You know that right?" The comment about being her life and soul hurt. Because that's what she was to him. So he didn't understand how or why that could be a bad thing. But he didn't question or demand further explanation from her. That was her truth. It didn't matter what he thought about any of it in the long run. He was here. No matter what. "Emilia..." He sighed into her hair. "You aren't foolish. Though I can't say you aren't cruel because I've seen your hitlist. But not cruel when it comes to me. You have all of eternity to make your choice. Even if you make one at all. I am certainly not going anywhere. So...you have me. Not matter what." He kissed her forehead. "Okay? You are my entire world. I would never want to be away from you."
Enzo frowned at that. "And your father....do we like him oooooor?" He made a mental note to add him to the hitlist in pencil. Just in case. Settling back into the bed, he hummed. "Well...jokes on him. We aren't alive are we?" He was a little smug about it too. "But...Emi, love. I will chisel away at that regret as long as you will allow me too. Because we are not only reflections of our choices. We always have the ability to redefine ourselves. So...no more of that regret for you. I won't stand for it."
Emi's lip trembled a bit before she could catch herself to steady it. "I have... but I don't know that he'll see it that way after this. It runs so deeply," she whispered shakily, her tone reflecting her uncertainty. "It reminds me in a way of when Natalia used to have nightmares, when we were children. And I couldn't do anything to take the monsters away. But being there didn't seem to be quite enough."
She sat up further, her gaze drifting towards the door of their room with a slowly budding smile as Enzo spoke. And she laughed then. Openly and truly laughed, covering her mouth as she did, but unable to help the response. "He loves Andre. He must. Who else would come into a den of vampires and court someone even at their worst?" She spun back around to face Enzo, a giddy sort of disbelief on her face. "This is good news. Someone else can remind Andre that it's okay to feel... maybe he can bring him back from the edge."
Emi moved closer beside Enzo again so that she was partly laying on his chest. And his expression melted her own into a sad sort of smile. "My hitlist is very reasonable," she retorted softly, tracing a gentle path along Enzo's temple and jawline. "It won't be an eternity for me to decide... I promise you that." She leaned forward after his declarations, kissing him deeply. "I know that... I only hope you know that of me. I could never be parted from you."
She gently batted her hand against Enzo's chest before snuggling into his side once more. "I loved him very much. And we're still alive for the intents and purposes of what he said. So do not mock the wisdom of a dead man," she scolded, but with only fondness in her tone and expression. His words made her smile deepen all the further as she glanced up at him. "Now you forbid me even regret? Am I allowed to do the same for you, amore mio?"

Enzo kept his eyes trained on Cory as he listened to Emi. Fascinated that despite all the pain he'd landed on the other vampire, he didn't even seem at all bothered by it. "Maybe not a cyborg." He mused. "Zombie...maybe? What happens if we just rip the whole damn arm off?"
Cory wheezed out another laugh. "We'll all be zombies in the end."
"Ah but...you first." Enzo replied a moment before ripping the entire arm off with a satisfactory amount of ease.
Now that...got a reaction. The blood for one. Spilled out of him. Despite his attempt to laugh it off and wave his stump at Enzo. He wasn't able to actually talk another though. Every time he tried he ended up in a fit a bloody sputters. Enzo had to take a step back to keep from getting it on his shoes.
He stepped over Cory's prone and twitching body and settled on the other side. "Emi love." He cooed to her, though he was busy digging his heel into the other vampire's shoulder. She didn't respond right away, so he side turned to get a visual on her and frowned. "Is the fun over already?"
Luci could have cried at her sisterās expression then. It nearly lingered on the edge of betrayal. But in heeding her wishes, sheād be truly betraying Natalia. They both would. Surely Emilia could see that.
āYou know how Natalia feels about this. And just because sheās did not make you promise your adherence does not mean you shouldnāt respect her wishes.ā She loosened her hold on Emi then, her tone softening equally so with the action. āDo not fashion our sister into a martyr when she still walks among us⦠Please.ā
Emiās gaze remained fixed on Luciana, her expression caught between anger and sadness in a way that only amounted to pain. The sound of Enzoās gentle voice through the silence only reinforced the grip that the moment had on her. And had she any true need for air, sheād have felt very breathless indeed. Of course Luci was right. Natalia did not settle well with violence, and particularly not on her behalf. But she wanted him dead. Oh, she wanted him to bleed and then some.
She removed herself from Luci and Nicās grips in a swift but gentle movement, using her full speed to catch them off guard as she now settled in between the two pairs at either side of her. Luciās expression also held pain, of that she was sure. And it welled up in her like a heavy sort of guilt.
Tearing her eyes away from her sister, Emi moved now to kneel in front of Cory. He was incoherently sputtering and she couldnāt deny herself some level of satisfaction at the state he was in. And seeing him so close only made her want to call for his death all the more so. He was a monster, and always would be in her eyes. She didnāt allow her gaze to leave his even as she spoke to Enzo. āIām afraid so.ā
She narrowed her eyes at Cory, tilting her head at the same time. āI do not choose this for your sake. And I promise you that if you raise a hand against me or anyone else that I love again, I will kill you. And I will relish in every minute of it then and in the millennia thereafter.ā She stood up, gaze never leaving his even now as she began digging her heel into Coryās other shoulder in a way that mirrored Enzo. āAm I understood?ā
Enzo allowed Emi to move so she was tucked against him. He felt almost sorry for voicing his worry about Sage, but it did bother him. That they weren't taking more care in watching him. They could at least bar his door or something. That asshole could have been messing in his head right now. But he decided he's deal with that later, maybe after Emi was asleep. He wrapped her up snuggly in his arms and murmured his apologies into her hair.
"That's the thing though..." He mused. "Andre has always willed himself to death. He's just very good at pretending otherwise. Makes...vampire after vampire after vampire. Hoping one of us would ease his loneliness. It's a sad sort of existence. Sometimes I wonder...are we doing him a favor at all?" He fell silent then for a moment. "Though...did you know? Some fae showed up at the door asking after him. No idea who he is. But...maybe the tides are changing."
At the feathery touch of her lips on his skin he shivered a bit. That ebbing sadness had yet to ease. Despite knowing logically that Emi loved him...it just wasn't enough. Maybe that was the issue in the end. No amount of love would be enough. "I was impulsive." He said softly. "I forgot that despite my love for you, which has been for always, that you have only just realized your own feelings. So...I will wait. Forever if I must. Just...please don't send me away from you. I won't survive it."
He sighed deeply. "Oh Emi love. I would never deny you anger. We all have it. Whether its directed at Andre or somewhere else. I just don't want you to regret it. Regret is not something you can take back."
Emi nuzzled into her spot against Enzo, shaking her head a bit. āYou donāt need to apologize either⦠I know youāre right to worry. But I donāt want Sage to feel imprisoned either. I donāt know whatās best⦠and I donāt know how to help him either.ā Everything had well and truly crumbled into such a state of fragility, and she hadnāt the slightest notion as to how to piece anything back together.
Perhaps she had never allowed herself to see Andre as lonely in her years of knowing him, at least not truly. He was surrounded by love and devotion, and yet she did know that something lingered beneath it. It left every moment tainted, in a sense. Maybe she thought sheād been doing him a favor in her avoidance of prying, but now? Now she couldnāt help but ponder it through Enzoās words. Maybe they ought to let him go⦠but she wasnāt certain she could. The mention of the fae snapped her out of her sadness though and she tilted her chin up to glance at Enzo. āWho told you that? And when? Did they let him in?ā
Emi whimpered a bit at the implication that she would ever send him away. āEnzo⦠I could never be parted from you,ā she soothed, imbuing the words with only the most genuine truth. āIf it were a question of whether or not I loved you, of if I wanted to be with you and only you for the rest of my eternity, then there would be no question in it⦠but I canāt lose you.ā She brought her hand up to enclose around her locket and the ring. āAnd you being my husband would make you my very life, my very soul. I donāt know how I could lose you.ā It was confusing even to her own ears, and yet she couldnāt quite bring herself to say yes yet. And she hated herself for it. She ducked her head back against Enzoās chest as she wrapped her arms around his neck to pull him closer. āIām being foolish and cruel⦠I know it makes no sense.ā
āRegret is inevitable⦠My father used to say that, to remind us that the human heart is far from infallible, and that our lives are a reflection of our choices. But that in that, nobody could avoid pain, either in feeling it or causing it.ā Emilia sniffled a bit, catching herself before she could fully succumb to her emotions. āI have lived with regret before, as I do now. But it is there to remind us that weāre alive⦠He was wise in that teaching.ā
"My own choices..." He repeated. "Ah...of course. Like you do..." He didn't mean it in any sort of mean way. Just a mere realization of why they were so different. Not wanting to argue, he settled on a soft smile for her instead.
At her statement about protecting him, he choked up a bit. Because that was so Emi. Swallowing hard, he could only nod his thanks. He wished he could look at the world so simply. To be able to be so certain of yourself. So certain of the things you could do, or even think for that matter. He knew then that he would fight to give Emi a world where that was true for her. He would never allow her world to be tarnished as his was. She deserved that. That and more.
"Ah yes..." He whispered with a nod. "Those songs..." Pressing his lips together, he dropped his eyes. "Very sentimental it seems." When she spoke of Enzo, in that fondness she did, he could merely shrug. "Well...his love for you transcends self-preservation. One of his endearing qualities." It felt good to joke about such things. Only because he knew Enzo enough to know he'd take no defense to that. He'd die for Emi, he'd never lead anyone to believe anything else. "I should think I don't have to warn you about that sort of devotion. You aren't the type to take it for granted. Never have been."
The smile slowly faded off his lips. "Oh Emilia...why would you do such a thing?" He didn't mean it to be cruel. Knowing that it wasn't an easy decision on her part. If a little misguided. "His love for you has nothing to do with the state of our seethe. It's never had anything to do with that." He wanted to question her real motives about it. But instead, he took her face gently in his hands. "There are no tomorrows promised to any of us. Would you not want him to know....in the grips of death....that you'd grant him that? You are not cruel...so I don't understand." He settled back then, letting his hands fall away. "Ah...I see." Offering her a sad little smile, he sighed. "Fear's only true opponent is love. Isn't it?"
Emi frowned at that. Whenever Sage was more caught in his mind or emotions he tended to wound in subtle ways with his wording. But she couldnāt really fault him for it either. Heād been through so much, and she knew well enough that he wasnāt meaning to hurt her. Things just werenāt simple anymore⦠not that they ever really had been, if she was being honest with herself. But the fleeting instances where they had forgotten any complications and troubles now played on her mind in a bittersweet melody.
āI couldnāt think of how else to get through to you⦠and you heard me. So, silly as it may have been I suppose it helped.ā Although āhelpā seemed to be far from the truth when it meant him being more cognizant of Andreās painful words. Emi hugged her arms around herself as Sage spoke of Enzo. It was one of the topics sheād found herself dwelling on all the more since his proposal. Did she take him for granted? His devotion? His loyalty? Or did she merely fear the weight of such a love? āI worry that I am⦠more than anyone would credit me for. I left him waiting, didnāt I? And even now⦠I worry about being worthy of that.ā
Emi actually winced at Sageās words and did her best to avert her gaze again, the shame of it swelling up within her again. But then heād taken her face into his gentle hold and she couldnāt look away from him, even as she teared up under his precise assessment. Sage knew her well. But he also knew regret, and felt it deeply. And that made her feel like even more of a villain in all of this. The silence that fell between them for a time was poignant, as if all time stood still in the wake of her being left vulnerable to the moment. But she wasnāt sure there was anything she could say. It wasnāt as if Sage meant to harm her, and he only spoke the truthādeep, painful truths about the world they lived in. And it made Emi feel like she was being awoken from a daze.
āItās weighs heavily enough on me to know that he would die for me if it came to it, and to know I would do the same for him. But to be man and wife makes it feel almost inevitable⦠for him to die for love of me. I couldnāt bear it,ā she whispered, curling in on herself again and squeezing her eyes shut. āIām not like my sisters; I canāt weather tragedy for the sake of myself or others. I would die with him. Thatās what this love is. And how am I meant to be okay with that? How am I meant to agree to a love that could very well kill us both?ā
Cory continued to laugh as he crawled out of the rubble. "I forgot..." He laughed. "I forgot that the little bitch had a guard dog." He wheezed.
Enzo watched with a curled lip as Cory crawled towards him. Like a little spider or a crab. Like that bloody girl with the long black hair from that Ring movie Emi forced him to sit through. Disgusting. And frankly creepy as hell.
"I'm going to stop you there..." He snarled. Stepping on one of his hands, crunching the fingers beneath his boot. "Call her a bitch again...Imma rip out your throat. In fact...maybe I'll rip it out anyway. So I don't have to hear your revolting voice." He shrugged. "Sensitive ears."
Cory's neck cracked to the side as he bared his fangs up at Enzo. But Enzo just snarled right back at him.
"My girl...and by extension all my girls. So...really. By any bloodline you get me. The guard dog as you put it."
Cory's reddened eyes found the girl, another girl, and some beefcake. He laughed again, still wheezing. "Is this all that's left? Of the Bernardi Seethe? So it's true...your maker abandoned you."
Well...now that was really just stupid. Enzo thought. He ground his shoe further into Cory's hand, but the grunt he got wasn't even worth the effort. "Are you some sort of cyborg?" He asked, his lip curling a bit. "No...cyborgs aren't as crunchy. Isn't that right, Emi love?" He asked over his shoulder as he hunched down closer to Cory.
Nic had heard of Cory, to be sure, and nothing good. But he was allowing Enzo to take the full reigns. This wasnāt his fight unless things got ugly, and he respected that. But he did go so far as to place a well-timed hand on Emiās shoulder as the offending vampire baited her anger.
Emi was torn between some sick satisfaction and pride over Enzo and her seething rage for Cory, but her gaze seemed rather more focused on the latter. She growled a bit as he looked at her, and even further at the comments towards Andre. If it werenāt for Nic she might have actually lunged forward. Her focus honed in on Enzoās assessment as he spoke to her though, and she found her lips tugging into a devilish sort of smirk as she took in Coryās pinned down figure again. āWell, I suppose they are crunchy in a way, but with more of a metallic sort of clang or scrape⦠I suppose youād just have to break a few more bones for me to compare the sounds properly, amore mio. His wrist, if weāre mirroring his damage to Natalia. Or his spinal column if it were up to me.ā
Luci caught her younger sister by the wrist then, not painfully tense in her grip but certainly not pleasantly either. And it even made Emi flinch until the elder girl spoke. āEmilia, stop this. Youād be no better than him,ā she whispered, her expression wide-eyed and nearly holding a warning.
"Happy?" He wanted to laugh but knew that would only hurt her sensibilities. "And what...do you think is going to make me happy?" He asked, genuinely curious.
"I won't be his soldier." He replied, "Not again. But I can't leave..." He trailed off because he wasn't sure he could even trust her. His Emilia. His sunshine. "What a mess." He settled on instead, running a hand over his face.
Deciding he'd rather not venture down that path, he fixed her with a look. "How are you? How is Enzo? I thought..." Shaking his head, he sighed. "What I think is highly subjective at this point. "But I do remember...you being there, you and Erebus. But then...you were suddenly gone. The only person who could have made you go would be him, Enzo." A sparkle from around her neck caught his attention. Leaning forward, he touched the dangling ring. "That's pretty...why is it here...and not on your finger?"
āI canāt answer that question for you. But you should find it out for yourself. You deserve to make your own choices and discoveries,ā Emi replied. The words were soft, but rife with feeling and she believed them all so very deeply.
Her expression softened again at the clear pain and conflict running through Sage. There was something even deeper in his eyes, something she couldnāt quite grasp. āI wonāt let anything happen to you⦠not if I can help it.ā
Normally she would have been a bit more miffed at Sage trying to change the subject, but she decided to be happy that he was still talking, that he was here and in one piece. That would have to do for now. Emi couldnāt help but tear up a bit at his recollections though. It was all rather raw, even now. āI was there, with you. I was singing you those silly French lullabies my mother taught my sisters and I.ā She offered him a watery smile, but it fell away into more of a choked out laugh. āYes, Enzo did get hurt, but he could be just shy of death and still fight to throw himself in front of me, as we both well know. He wouldnāt stop fighting, so I left you in Erebusā care.ā
Emiliaās breath caught a bit as Sage questioned the ring, and she felt almost shameful in the gentle accusation behind the query. She averted her eyes to her left hand, to that empty ring finger in question. āI didnāt feel I could accept him without righting our family, without mending things withā¦ā She trailed off, thinking it potentially would be better to avoid mention of their maker. āI will accept him. When these bastards make their exit to the gates of hell,ā she replied rather plainly, in hopes it might be a bit humorous in her flippancy.

At her gentle touch he unraveled completely. He caught her hand with his, holding it to his face āHeās everywhere. I canāt get him out of my headā¦ā He ground out. āPlease.. you have to go. I canāt..I canāt let him get to you..ā
He released her suddenly, a shudder going through him. Heād been fighting himself so hard. Fighting to keep control of his own mind. He couldnāt look at Emi any longer. The openness in her expression, the love. He didnāt deserve her love. None of them.
āI wanted itā¦ā he moaned softly. āI let him in. Now I⦠I canāt get him out. He found us. I donāt know how⦠oh god.. I tried. But now heās here. Please Emi.. tell him Iām sorry. Tell Sage Iām so sorryā¦ā he couldnāt stop the tears then. It had been so long he let himself cry. āIām so sorry..ā
Emi was stunned into silence as Andre seemed to shatter before her. Sheād expected anger, sheād expected yelling. But weeping? Begging? Apologies? No, no, this was all so wrong.
She clambered forward again so that she was beside Andre, going a step further now and pulling him against her chest as he cried. āIāll tell him. Iāll tell Sage,ā she promised, pressing a kiss to his hair. āBut Iām not going anywhere right now.ā Her voice caught a bit, steadily overcome with the emotions of her maker as well as her own. āYouāre not alone, okay? Iām hereā¦ā She took in a shaky breath to try to steady them both, but it was no use really. āStay here with me. Itās just you and me, mon cher.ā
In the Italian Seethe Kitchen
"I'd say being worried about someone is low price to pay for having people to love, and who love you,"
Emi all but slammed her head onto the marble countertop of the kitchen island where she sat, grumbling all the while. āI know youāre right, but I donāt have to like it.ā
