"Stop saying 15 year olds with weird interests are cringe, they're 15" this is true however you should also stop saying adults with weird interests are cringe because who gives a shit
I want to share some wisdom from my high school art teacher.
In my AP Art class, there was a girl who was just starting to experiment with mixed media. At this point she was still playing around, trying to decide what direction she wanted to go with her portfolio. So one critique day, she brought in an abstract canvas with some rhinestone highlights and painted and real peacock feathers. She loved sparkles and peacock feathers so she thought sheβd try introducing them a *little*. And after everyone had given some input, the teacher gave her his advice, VERY roughly paraphrased here:
βSo hereβs the thingβ¦ I do not like this style. These are just elements that do not speak to me personally, but I see that you like them, and youβre doing interesting things with them.
βMy biggest critique is, I only merely *dislike* this piece. I want you to make me HATE it. Go crazy with the things that you like. Donβt hold back trying to make it palatable to people like me. Because I am NEVER going to like it. And if the audience does not like it, it should drive them crazy seeing how much YOU love it.β
Her portfolio was chock full of neon colors and glitter and rhinestones and splashes of peacock feathers and it was a delight. Our teacher despised every piece lol, but she got great marks and I think even won some awards. And more importantly, she was happy and proud of the results. Because she didnβt limit herself by trying to appeal to people who were never going to enjoy what she enjoyed.
Takeaway here: be as cringe as you want. Donβt limit yourself based on other pplβs tastes. Theyβre not you, and you are incredible π

I'd like to thank @chaptersonetoinfinity for participating with me, and I hope those of you who were following this enjoyed what we made!
Will I do this again next year? Probably not, as I'm not on Tumblr these days. It was fun while it lasted though, and hosting my two events was worth it to encourage others to have a go at creating their own VaniGrey. If I was able to spread the love to even one person, that's enough for me. Never say never though, with the anime coming back I can't say for sure what the next year will bring, so I'll leave the door open on that.
So that's it for now. Thanks for your time, and VaniGrey forever ππ€

WWOOS is back, and oh boy, you'd better sit down for this one.
Do you remember the glass slippers? The ones that started it all back in the fic of the same name? Well, we're getting lore on what exactly those things were - and there'll be a hefty dose of emotional damage too.
Writing this chapter destroyed me. If I've done my job right, it'll destroy you too.

Hi! I thought that Iβd make another characterisation/lore essay, and asked from you guys who should be next, and the poll came back as Nacht :3 So Iβll make an essay for him too. Just a reminder that this does contain given/self-evident information from canon, headcanons, and just things Iβve picked up over the years. And as such this is just my personal view of him, so if you view something differently, you donβt have to incorporate that into your belief system :DΒ DOES CONTAIN MANGA SPOILERS

Background:
Nachtβs devils:Β
His name:
Symbolism/role in the story:
Nachtβs role after the series:
Background:
Nacht is the oldest child of the, now fallen, House of Faust. He is 180 cm tall, built lean so probably is placed in the 65-75kg range. His eyes are ice blue, hair is naturally black but he bleached it in his youth, which created a more visible difference between him and his twin brother Morgen (along with clothes, personality, work/study style etc). His birthday is April 30th, and he likes βpeople who are rightβ, which could also mean he likes righteous people (as stated in this translation in his character profile). Heβs also the Vice Captain of the Black Bulls (although absent for most of the series, as heβs spying in Spade).
(Chapter 285)
He is at the time of the manga events in pact with 4 devils, with whom he is able to form devil union. These devils are Gimodelo (dog), Plumede (cat), Walgner (rooster), and Slotos (donkey), which represent the Bremen animals. And Nacht himself is most likely modelled after the German legend of the erudite Faust.Β
His magic affinity is Shadow magic.
Nacht is someone who is described (I read it as being told by the narrator), as someone who is selfish and a delinquent (above image from chapter 285). And Nacht himself admits that he never wanted to be a knight, that he couldnβt remember doing anything that wasnβt fun and βbadβ, while Morgen was the polar opposite. When Nacht was out engaging in petty crime with Yami (or βpetty enough to not get hauled in by the knightsβ), Morgen was someone who lived for others.Β
But while Morgen was a model citizen, someone who was βlightβ, while Nacht was βshadowβ, it was Nacht who was more like the House of Faust.
And Nacht excelled in his studies; he was a genius of the dark arts. Much to his dismay.Β
But at the time of dwelling into the dark arts, he didnβt stop to consider the effects of his actions, which is why he was striving to βsurpass his limitsβ (a quote he got from Yami I assume). I think Nacht is someone who used to think too much of his capabilities, because he had always βgotten away with itβ. He had always just gotten a slap on the wrist (if even that), but no real consequences. Which is what he had aimed to do, since they had kept it βpetty enoughβ with Yami. But now that it was just him, in his study, in a dungeon, dealing with threats and feigned authorities (because you can claim that a King of Devils is a kind/type of an authority), he didnβt have an idea of what he was getting into.
So, he decided to just test his limits without really knowing what they were. Because at this time, I donβt think he had made pacts with his 4 devils we see in canon. Nacht just decided to jump straight into the deep end and go head to head with the King of Devils. Meaning that he wanted to run before he could walk, or crawl, maybe even sit up. And the people around him let him, maybe out of greed, out of wanting to get fame of some kind. No other than Morgen stopped to think in this scenario.Β
And I donβt think Nacht had a plan beyond doing the summoning really. Even if he had gotten a devil here, would he have known what to do with it? I donβt think he would have. He was just doing something for the sake of doing it, like the petty crime as a noble man. I canβt imagine that he was exactly short of money while growing up, so he was just doing it for the thrills. And similarly, he decided to summon a devil and challenge it just for the thrill of it.Β
Which ended up costing him everything.
But this doesnβt mean that he would be without a moral compass, because as soon as he realises what he has done, he quite literally begs for any higher power to turn back time and make his mistakes undone. He admits to loving his brother, despite the tone of the story prior to this moment being somewhat annoyed or even angry at Morgen. And maybe there is some grief stricken anger in it. Like Nacht would be angry at Morgen for βalways being the guy who does the right thing, which is what got him killedβ. Basically Nacht is indirectly blaming Morgen for dying in his stead, because Morgen βhadnβt done anything wrongβ. And I think this tells that Nacht, too, does have a rather strong sense of responsibility. BUT. Itβs not a sense of responsibility towards authority figures.Β
Nacht is praying for an unseen deity to save them, but I think itβs his inner monologue that kicks in and itβs him himself ridiculing him. Because he knows that this is the doing of no one but him (granted his parents could have maybe slowed him down, but they also wanted a Supreme Devil in the family, so why not let Nacht do what heβs able to do; I donβt think they knew much better than Nacht tbh).
However, Nacht does believe in people being held responsible for what they did (if theyβre caught). This is why he never tried to do any larger crimes. Because he wouldnβt throw someone else under the buss to pay for his crimes. So, if someone was to be held accountable for his actions, it should be him. But it doesnβt mean that he wanted to get caught, so he wouldnβt walk up to a knight and admit his wrongdoings either. He wonβt go looking for consequences, but he would weather the punishment if it came to him. Because his crimes are his and his alone.Β
And the rest of the series is him trying to atone for his βcrimesβ. But no one in the mortal world can really hold him accountable, which is why heβs left in the grief stricken state where he doesnβt care if he dies while atoning for his actions. But I also do think that Nacht, secretly, also wishes to die while saving someone else, much like Morgen did, and maybe by doing this he could finally pay for his actions.Β
Eye for an eye. But eye for an eye where it matters.Β
Nachtβs devils:
Gimodelo
(Canis; aka βdogβ)
(Canis x Equus)
(Canis x Felis x Gallus)
Plumede
(Felis; aka βcatβ)
and (Canis x Felis)
Walgner
(Gallus, aka βroosterβ)
Slotos
(Equus, aka βhorseβ)
(All 4; Canis x Felis x Gallus x Equus)
I think that Gimodelo (aka the dog devil) being Nachtβs βprimary devilβ symbolises how Nacht is much more loyal than he wants to appear. Itβs all other parts of him that follow. The sneaky and the cunning, the guarded, and the ready to βpeckβ you with sharp words, these all come second to his loyalty. (But my personal favourite union form is βCanis x Felis x Gallusβ)
His name:
Nachtβs first name is the German word for βnightβ, which is used to further emphasise his characterisation being on the darker and gloomier side. But considering how itβs not exactly like βdarknessβ, itβs more aligned with βshadow magicβ than βdark magicβ (there is also a distinction here between Nacht and Yami). Because night has the moon, the stars, some form of light. In the north summer nights are as bright as days due to the βnightless nightβ. So βnightβ isnβt synonymous to βdarknessβ. There is light in the darkness as well, which I feel goes well with his character, since Nacht, despite his blunt and cold exterior, has a personality who cares very deeply within. And I suppose you could also argue that while he appears cold and distant on the surface, he also has a smile plastered on his face, so the smile can also be a source of metaphorical light on his face.Β
Also Iβve noticed how people tend to pronounce his name βn-ak-tβ instead of βn-ah-tβ, thus accidentally, in a way, giving him the nickname of βnakedβ (because βnacktβ means βnakedβ in German). Which is antithetical to his reserved, cloaked self, but in a way understanding someone guarded, there is, I think, a more prominent idea of metaphorically undressing a character to really get to the core of who they are. So who is Nacht at his bare core? Behind the feigned-not-exactly-happy-smile and a look of indifference, blunt remarks, and superficial coldness he wears as a shield? His fans want to get past the shield and see him for who he is.Β
Getting back to Nachtβs name. His last name βFaustβ, appears to be derived from Latin βfaustusβ, meaning βluckyβ or βof good fortuneβ, whichβ¦ looking at what happens to the House of Faust (and Nacht), is anything but lucky. So there is an antithesis in his name, which I feel is more accidental from Tabataβs part, since I do think he took a lot of inspiration from the legend of Faust, in which the antithesis already exists.Β
Symbolism/role in the story:
I think that Nachtβs role in the story is about a lot of the grief that we donβt see being displayed. Because there are a lot of knights, soldiers, who we donβt see being grieved Iβm sure. Because while the story is meant to be a story about heroism and friendship, Iβm sure there are deaths along the way in the kingdom. We just donβt see them. And sometimes, while there isnβt obvious death, there is grief that people donβt want to show.Β
But also I think that while Nacht views himself as a kind of a βdarknessβ or βevilβ or βbadβ, heβs not. He and Morgen arenβt opposites. Which is even implied in canon when the comparison between βdark and lightβ is being given to Morgen and Yami, not Morgen and Nacht.Β
There is good in Nacht (thereβs also good in Yami; Yamiβs a really good guy, but speaking from Nachtβs pov and how he sees himself as βbadβ), and while he might think of himself as being completely opposite from Morgen, there are some traits they share. For example the loyalty, sense of responsibility. But they just show themselves in different ways in Nacht. For example, Morgen wouldnβt do petty crime, but Nacht wouldnβt have someone else get the blame for his petty crime. There is βgoodβ in both personalities.Β
However, this isnβt how Nacht sees it.Β
He didnβt think that he was good enough to stand by Morgen.Β
I think Nacht thinks that someone who is good, never gets tempted to do something bad. And while I do think that βgoodβ people might not get tempted to do some βbadβ things (like they might not get a temptation to steal that nice bag from a store), they do get temptations to do some things in their life. However, what determines the goodness and badness here is what they choose to do in those moments of temptation. What they choose to make of themselves.Β
And by extension of that, I do think that Nacht really is good.Β
And of course Nacht is a mentor to Asta, helps him get acquainted with Liebe. Nacht has a concrete role in Astaβs journey through this. And in the outcome of the battle.Β
But also there is the theme of βlightβ and βshadowβ in a way of βlight isnβt always good, and shadow isnβt always badβ through Luciusβ twisted world view.Β
However, I think that Nachtβs role is also about self-forgiveness. That while there should be consequences, there should also be life after the consequences. Nacht, in my opinion, isnβt a bad person. But he has done bad things.
Still, him wallowing in his grief, and searching for the most βdeserving way to dieβ as a way of βatoning for his sinsβ, isnβt going to do as much good as he could do by helping the people around him. As in, if Nacht hadnβt come back, who would have taught Asta?Β
Nacht after the series:
I think Nacht will continue to be responsible and loyal, and itβs already shown that he will continue as the Captain of the Black Bulls. And despite the stress and needing to deal with the rowdy Bulls, I think he is happier. I think heβs daring to be happier. Allow himself to be happy.Β
But itβs still going to be an uphill battle for him to get in touch with his feelings. And heβs still going to keep his heart close to his chest. However, I think heβll find himself a home again, since the House of Faust is no more. The ruins exist, but not the House with its people.Β
Now Nacht can settle into a new place, a new family. Settle for the first time in ages, because I donβt think he settled much in Spade. And the settling will take a moment, but given how heβs allowing himself to want again, to accept the good again, he eventually will.
Fanfic is a great way to practice self-indulgence while writing. It doesnβt even have to be good, it just exists purely for your pleasure, be a little freak about it. Worry about quality and what other people think when it comes to works you intend to publish in a formal setting
honestly, having flexibility in your headcanons is such an important skill to develop as a fandom participant. like, it's great to have strong opinions of your own, but don't you want to hear what strong opinions others hold? I love being compelled by a passionate argument! go off! tell me something I don't assume! give me the tea that's not inherent to my watching!

before you're ever good at something, you must allow yourself to be a beginner at that thing first. if you try something for the first time, chances are that you're gonna suck at it. but the beautiful thing about being a beginner is that you don't have to be a beginner forever β if you don't let the way you think "the first time I tried something, it turned out terrible" discourage you from mastering your crafts, you'll keep getting better and better. and the best thing about practicing is that you never stop getting better, there's no point you can ever reach the point where you can never be better anymore. as long as you're still alive and as long as you keep doing it, you'll only get better. you'll go from a beginner to a skilled expert and even when you're a skilled expert now, there's always more room for you to grow and be better, as long as you keep doing it. and it all starts at being a beginner and being suck at it first. there's something very humbling and beautiful about being a beginner and being suck at something β‘

Happy 1-year anniversary to We'll Write Our Own Stories ππ€ and what a doozy of a chapter we have today!
Not only is it chapter 20 (!!!) but the Musicians of Bremen mini-arc is coming to an end after being twisted into a horror story. And next time, finally, after a year of dreaming about this...
"Mirror, mirror, on the wall - who's the fairest of them all?"
