Very sad about the passing of my old friend “Heavy Metal “Scott Koenig. I first met Scott at 20 years of age. I had no idea a metal dude could be cool but Scott changed my perception of what a metal dude was. He loved early rap, sneakers, chicks with big hair, thrash and hardcore and most of all METAL! He took me to see Metallica at Lamour, he hipped me to Sepultura a few years later, shit he took me to see Iron Maiden at the Meadowlands in 87. Above all he was just a righteous dude. Had a lot if fun with him in the early Def Jam days and later when he moved to LA hanging at The Rainbow. He was loved by all. He was funny, smart and most of all a thoughtful person. He gave a shit. He also schooled me on lots of heavy music over the years. Gonna miss him. May his soul be granted the peace he deserves. Ol Dirty Bastard- Shimmy Shimmy Ya: copped the box set being that Rhino never sent me one even though I did the Amazon music clip for the project but hey whatever. I was the A and R guy behind this masterpiece. Nice to have this on 7 inch, the box set looks great though it kind of flew under the radar a bit. Would be nice to play this out soon come been forever since I rocked 45s out thanks pandemic. Nothing hut fond memories of this record and of Ason Unique. Never cared for the E40 remix but hey thats just ‘3 right? I will refrain from any shot throwing and just celebrate this record and the man behind it all The RZA who was fantastic to work with in this. I always have felt like I caught kightening in a bottle on this LP and in all honesty I consider it the crowning achievement in my work at Elektra records. About last night.. I played a few while my boy @i_am_djmateo hit the bathroom. I was ehh CDJs ain’t my strong suit but it was cool to play at the Academy opening I drive past the dome everyday. Melvin Van Peebles passed today. He was 89z a personal hero of mine, he invented independent black cinema and is often credit with the invention of Blaxploitation. I credit him with being a genius. I sampled his records, I loved Sweet Back Bad Ass Song. He really broke all the rules, and followed his own vision. He was a great writer, a unique and brilliant filmaker and a pretty good actor. He changed the game. A true revolutionary . If ever anyone stood for black excellence it was this man. He was the OG of OG’s. 9/11: I was in LA when it happened. I was in bed with ny then girlfriend at the Standard Hotel in Sunset when my phone rang. It was Everlast telling me to turn in the TV I was going to go back to sleep he was like NYC is under attack. I turned in the TV and the 2nd plane hit the 2nd tower. I immediately tried calling people in NY but phones were all down. Only thing working was my two way pager. Got through to few people. My partner John Gamble RIP told me he saw people jumping out of the building from his near by rooftop. Fucked him up for weeks. I felt so helpless that day. Couldn’t go home for a week, I went back with @operatorEmz the 2nd day they allowed air travel. You could cut the tension in the sir on that flight with a knife. I remember feeling NYV had gotten jumped. Cane home went right to my roof which had a direct view of the Towers and tears rolled down my face. One of the defining moments for Nyers in modern history and me I was stranded 3000 miles away when it happened. Never forget.
