Chapter 2 Cracking Under Pressure

Charles could feel his own impatience tightening around the edges of his skin. He was aware of every movement now: the way his shoulder brushed the wall when he turned, the way Max’s eyes moved with him without seeming to move at all.

It was too much and not enough at once.

Max finally spoke. “You can sit down.”

Charles gave him an incredulous look. “I do not need instructions.”

“Then stop acting like the floor owes you something.”

The words were flat, but there was an unmistakable edge under them now, the first true crack of the morning. Charles stopped pacing and turned fully toward him.

Max was still sitting at the table, one hand around the mug, posture loose in a way that fooled almost no one. His expression said calm. His body movements said otherwise. There was tension there too, coiled and waiting.

Charles hated that he could tell.

Max followed his gaze and his mouth twitched like he might be on the verge of saying something unhelpful.

Charles beat him to it. “If you say anything, I will leave.”

Max’s expression went flat. “Then don’t make me say anything.”

Charles huffed despite himself and turned toward the small kitchen area, more to create distance than to find anything useful.

The storm kept raging.

He could hear Max moving behind him, the rustle of a damp jacket being stripped off, the soft thunk of something set down on the table. Every sound felt too loud in the enclosed space.

Every silence felt worse.

At last Charles spoke without turning around. “This is absurd." _____________________________________
