If you live your life honestly and truthfully, you'll be open and transparent, which leads to trust. And trust leads to friendship.
His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama
Sometimes I get frustrated that after everything I always do to help other people out no matter what, no one seems to want to help me back. It makes me feel really bad and almost angry, even though I know I do the good things because I want to and not for anything in return. Is getting angry about this sometimes bad karma?
Dear friend:
Having your deeds go unnoticed, your feelings validated or to not have the helping hand extended back to you is never easy.
I would say that bringing anger as an emotional response would not lead to bad karma, if it is simply inner-expression and never acted upon.
Expressing yourself in the present moment is critical for the well-being of our mental health.
In appropriate cases, communication with parties involved could make all the difference. So long as nothing is escalated and communication is strong in understanding. Calling out that you are frustrated at times, because you aren’t feeling validated by reciprocated actions--relating to the party by empathizing emotions. Shouting, barking or verbally attacking another serves no purpose other than giving the other party remember the perfect reason to tune you out.
Where bad karma can come into play is if you are helping other people just to get their favor later, or intentionally seeking praise and gratification. This is helping for a more selfish means and will lead to frustration and poor mental being.
I have seen this problem many times, and I will tell you that even if it seems that your deeds go unnoticed, I am certain that in many cases they are not. For many, it is not an easy thing to do--admitting that they needed help in the first place.
I urge you to try not living in the past, remembering all those times you were never thanked or helped in return. Nor in the future, assuming those you have helped to automatically provide aid when you need it.
Live for the moment, continue helping people because it makes you feel good, for the satisfaction that you know who you are. You don’t do it for the praise or the favors, but because it makes you feel good to help another, because in that very moment you had the ability to help someone--so you did.
I am proud of your ability to help people, I commend you greatly for it. Please do not feel bad or frustrated when an outcome may not be as you wish it. Just be happy in what you do, and who you are--I do assure you, there are people that appreciate all that you do and all that you are.
I hope this aids your on your personal journey, it was very brave of you to reach-out, please do not hesitate to ask more, follow-up, whatever you may need.

Is there anything wrong with listening to recorded meditations? Are they as affective? I find the ones I use really do put the positive messages in my head but I was wondering if I should be avoiding them for any reason?
Dear friend:
There is absolutely nothing wrong listening to recorded meditation. Especially if they increase the amount of positive messages in your head. I don’t see any reason that you should avoid them, if they are increasing and broadening your mind.
I would urge you to try meditation on your own, without the use of recorded meditation from time-to-time. Everyone has their own journey when it comes to meditation, but in the end we are more aware of ourselves if we do it ourselves.
Relax, rest be in the present moment, allowing whatever arises to arise. This is important to recognize that what ever thoughts, emotions or feelings that come up during meditation good or otherwise--you don’t have to block them, but you don’t have to follow them, just recognize them and allow yourself to be aware of them.
This is something that can rarely be achieved when listening to recorded meditations, as you begin to focus more on what they are doing or saying, then listening to yourself.
When practicing meditation by yourself over time you become free of your emotions, as you discover the confidence of your true self. What we are doing is resting our mind in its natural awareness, being completely unaffected by whatever may arise.
I hope this aids your on your personal journey, it was very brave of you to reach-out, please do not hesitate to ask more, follow-up, whatever you may need.

Sometimes I feel blocked when I'm meditating like I could be getting better but somethings stopping me. It feels like guilt or embarrassment but I haven't done anything to feel like that nor has anything happened like that while meditating. Ideas?
Dear friend:
Feeling blocked, guilty or embarrassed while meditating is very common. It tends to stem from while the mind is no longer caught up in the rushing of day-to-day life and the distractions that life can bring. We become more aware of our feelings that have been pushed temporarily aside. These feelings can cause uneasiness or ill-feeling to stop session or meditation in general.
To combat these feelings and find your deep relaxation is to resist the urge to push these feelings aside as they arise, as they truly never go away. This is focusing on being present-minded, or focusing on “what is” and not “what was” or “what will be”. Allowing your body and mind to process truly the emotion being provoked as it is happening will allow for greater wisdom and understanding of your body, and will help shield your mind in the future, not allowing anything unhealthy to grow.
I hope this aids your on your personal journey, it was very brave of you to reach-out, please do not hesitate to ask more, follow-up, whatever you may need.

We have to make a special effort to think of each other as fellow human beings, as our brothers and sisters.

When you help others, do so out of respect. Don't look down on them. Serve other human beings with a compassionate intent.

There is a lover. A lover whom I was supposed to let go of, a long time ago. It has been 3 years. I still find myself stuck. What should I do?
Dear friend:
I’m a little uncertain what you mean by supposed to let go of. I see it as you are in a relationship that is unhealthy? If so there are a few things I can suggest.
Always do what is best for you,
Be gentle with yourself.Move at a comfortable pace through good times and the bad, rushing sensitive or important subjects can too easily allow for complications. Self-care isn’t meant to be a quick-fix to make all uncomfortable emotions disappear, and it won’t replace the difficult recovery processes we must go through when we endure trauma or loss, or the work to get out of a rut that currently are facing.
Remain present-minded.Live for the now, remember the good times of the past, recognize and learn from the bad. Plan for the future in the long-term. But do not let them control you, live for now, this moment. Life is a series of a moments, living in the past or the future, you may just miss some of the beauty.
If you continue to find yourself stuck, I urge you to use methods of expression and self-evaluation. Methods like, writing the situation and/or your feelings down on paper, or in a poem, or short-story. Transferring all the emotion you have swirling about into a painting, a song, or other medium. This is nothing that requires a talent of any kind, a painting can be as simple as thick brush stroked lines across an empty canvas in colors that represent feelings and emotion. When a method is used, I urge you to take a step back, smile, and reflect on what you have just created--and ultimately what it represents.

It is possible to use our intelligence and extend our compassion to others, including even our enemies.

This is my simple religion. There is no need for temples; no need for complicated philosophy. Our own brain, our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness.

Fundamentally, all spiritual traditions help us train our minds, overcome our negativities and fulfill our inner potential.

The future is in your hands, but for it to be peaceful and happy requires a sense of compassion and concern for others’ well-being.
His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama This is also in recognition of a very special person. Don't forget to have compassion and concern for others, you must find those attributes inside yourself. Be well.
Many think that happiness is to be found outside ourselves in material things, but actually happiness is something that comes from within.
