I have translated my writing process into other classes already. In my history class, I had to read a book on Alexander the Great and write a rhetorical analysis essay. I would’ve just read the book and sat down and wrote my paper, but instead I took notes with the page number every time I found valuable information. I also had multiple drafts for that essay which I never tend to do.

My writing has improved by being more straight to the point. Instead of trying to sound super intelligent or mature within my writing, I write what I mean and don’t ramble.

2. My argument expands my original article because it uses information provided and outside sources that support the same idea.

- It would probably be best for me to look at only educational articles for the most part; articles found in the online educational libraries or articles with the “.gov” domain.

Potential counterargument: Invading the oceans can negatively impact marine life and ecosystems.

The writer uses the word sea vegetables as figurative language and that is why it is quoted. It is not a piece of information from a source. I can use this technique in my paper since it is just using figurative language and imposing quotations around the word to tell the reader that “sea vegetables” are a term used, not literal vegetables in the sea.

When I receive peer revisions back I have noticed that it’s most helpful when people specifically tell me to fix certain things. Instead of just writing in the margins “comma splice” or “wordy”, it’s nice when they give examples on how to solve the problem (within reason) instead of just pointing it out. Being specific has always been helpful so I can keep in mind what I need to work on directly rather than my paper as a whole.

I read an article titled "To Save the Climate, Look to the Oceans" by Ayanna Elizabeth Johnson. In this article Johnson talks about how the ocean can be utilized to lower our negative impact on the earth. Johnson uses logos by including statistics about the ocean and how the government has used the ocean to reduce pollution. She also uses Ethos because she is a marine biologist, therefore she is a credible person to listen to about the ocean.

The word rhetoric has a positive connotation to me. Rhetoric is basically the conversation; the words one uses and way they are able to communicate ideas and convince others of those ideas. A rhetorical analysis in itself is the examination of an author’s work, breaking it down and finding different rhetorical devices used in the work, and seeing how that author uses those devices to further develop their point. It helps the author accomplish communicating a clear message, while also using devices to analyze their previous statements. It helps the reader better connect with the author and understand the reasoning behind a statement as well.

My process kind of happens while I’m writing. Sometimes its hard for me to gather my thoughts so I just like to put it all out on paper. When I make an error I immediately fix it. After each sentence I like to go back two sentences and look to see if they are cohesive. I make sure there are no mistakes regarding grammar and then I continue. After I’m done I like to read my paper backwards to make sure I’m really paying attention to everything I’m writing. This sounds odd but I do it so my brain isn’t constantly on autopilot since I know what will be written next. I don’t think there would be much I would change about my process, but maybe sitting down and writing out bullet points for each paragraph so I don’t lose my train of thought.

I did have one teacher though, Mrs. Burke, who was my favorite teacher. She more taught me writing tools rather than giving advice, which in itself I guess can serve the same purpose. She created an AP independent study for me and one other classmate to take; the focus of it was rhetorical analysis. I really enjoyed her class and how “one-on-one” it was; it definitely helped me enjoy writing and enjoy doing well in writing.

I think the purpose of writing is to be able to thoughtfully communicate your certain message and leave the reader with more than they came with.
