Daily Pony Doodles

Decided to sketch Fluttershy to try out my new sketch book. (it’s too rough for small sketches. I want a new one >_<

got the idea from, i am knot’s sketches, so i disidet to send you this, and hopefully this this will inspire somebody to draw more, (i’m looking at you bernd.)

A good tablet is always something worth investing in if you are going to use it. If you're looking at a career in art you better start learning photoshop. And more than just doodling in it. I mean using all it's abilities and looking at photoshop tutorials.

Result of two days trying to draw in photoshop. Sometimes I hate art -.-

Maybe I should just stick with illustrator… But that probably wont get me anywhere…

Sorry I didn’t get to this sooner, but this looks AWESOME! I love the pose, and I dig the style. This is sweet. Grade A doodle. 10/10.

When drawing in photoshop neat clean lines are an almost impossible feat until you are a tablet master. but for the mean time while you are learning, embrace it! I see lots of messy lines in this which is perfect! A doodle is supposed to be messy because you can make a beautiful drawing from that mess.

Now lets talk anatomy. Anatomy on an original pose like this is extremely tricky, but A+ for trying to tackle it. That’s how we learn!

Her raised for-arm is super long, and you’ll want to shorten it. Then where her lower neas or “hawks” are, are very thin. That’s as simple as taking the line on the back of the leg there back a little so that joint in the leg doesn’t look so flimsy. Then her shoulders arn’t very pronounced, this is a very human pose, and you’ll want to make sure that we can tell what is going on with the neck area. So remember that you have to draw the shoulders, and then with her chest pointing away and her head half way turned we would see the tops of her shoulder, and the twisting of her neck.

Now I see this pose as her sitting, BUT I can also see her laying down. And if that’s the case, then you’ll still want to draw the shoulders. Not much changes, but if she’s laying then you’ll want to include the other arm somewhere. Where if she was sitting we wouldn’t be able to see it because it would be holding her up. Or we would see it behind her slightly.

This is a beautiful doodle otherwise. What can really help with anatomy is if you include the under sketch and draw the shapes of the body.

Remember that with doodles you always want to make lots of messy lines and then make a new layer and you can make cleaner lines over that. Then just do that again until you have a doodle you are happy with. And it’s at this step don’t worry about making them not shaky or w/e, embrace it. Just worry about making a good drawing. With lots of messy lines. :)

i tried out a new style.

basically what i did was, i drew a sketch and inked that with thick outlines then i did the grayscale shading and colored it with an overlay layer, finally i played around with the brightness and saturation sliders.

Hmmm... Yes. Quite. I like it. I always like to see you trying out new stuff. Ironically the ponies always seems to match your style. and how they are painted is always similar. I have yet to see you make work that really leaves what you're used too making, yet you seem to strive so much to try new things.

Your doodle seems extremely saturated, I would chalk that up to your sliders. But that's probably the point since it's a Pinkie piece. Haha.

The black outlines do seem think, but they also seems messy and heavy handed. Almost odd in a way as if they don't fit the extremely bright and colorful pony. Which is probably because they are not colored like the show so my mind makes it feel odd almost like it's telling me it's wrong because of it. Which is a cool thing in an of itself.

This is also a very odd pose. She is on two legs and has the others raised correct? If so then her raised back leg seems odd and her raised front leg seems very broad. Also her entire pelvic area seems off. It seems very small as if the hips aren't drawn. It's important ponies have buts. It's half their body.

I do really like the purple shading. I love to see you shading with color for a change instead of black and white. A+ for that.

Got a Princess Celestia with straighter lines here. A friend told me there is a way to make lines much smoother. It’s awesome! I guess this is a portrait then?

I'm glad you learned a better way to make lines! SAI is a god send for me when I draw! It's technically a traditional portrait view of a figure. My art teacher would argue with the point that a portrait can only be of something or someone that has existed in the tangible world as a record, and you can't make a portrait of something/someone that isn't or wan't real. Because a portrait is merely a recording or a being that is or once was. BUT that being said it's a cartoon pony, and this isn't art history, and it's a fantastic doodle of a portrait. But hey! Hopefully someone reading this learned something.

As for the doodle itself, the arch of the nose it curved quite a bit. Making her nose very stout. And that's about it for critique. I always like your submissions because I can see the under sketches and steps you took to get there. Keep up the awesome work!

And this doodle is awesome! A small critique is you have a mare nose on a stallion pony. But I don't mind being effeminate. Haha. It still looks good. Solid doodle. 10/10

Not sure where you draw the line for “doodles”. But here goes!

These are AWESOME! I’ll accept most submissions sent. My line for doodles is malleable.

Unfortunately I don't have much to critique on the doodles given. When it comes to art you are much more practiced that I. But if you ever have an art piece you'd like feed back on while it's in the sketching stages I'd be happy to offer my two sense on it.

So i’m not sure if this counts as a doodle or not, (or why i made it) i did make this in about three hours so… actually what does counts as a doodle?

A doodle is something you make quickly and a drawing you do just to draw. Once you have the sketch of a pony, anything more than that is optional. We'll call this an advanced doodle with color.

I think it's fantastic. I love it, and I love you. Pink is so my color.

Now this is what I love to see! I can see the under sketch, and the finalized lines you've made, so I can see the improvisations you've chosen to make, as well as liberties you've taken with your style!

I would love to offer you a critique!~

Your pose is fantastic, it's original and unconventional. Two big things people strive for. You anatomy looks on point, as well as size of most things.

Now before I start with things I feel could be improved I'd like to simply point out things I notice with your doodle. First big thing is I can tell the way you do your nose is a style choice, and it's very nostrily, which is cute. Your ear is also done in a unique way, different from show style. Then the last bit is the mouth and eyebrows are very animated and cartoony. Where the eye brows are leaving the face and the mouth is pushed so far up it's right below the nose. Both those things are a very cute touch and play really nicely with your style choice. I love the eyelashes, it's again not show style, it's unique/different, which I dig, it's very cute. And I love the hair, super cute.

Also I like how the nostrils are raised like the eyebrows, they are mirroring them, it's almost like shes flaring them and they match her expression. Hehe. And On that thought, I could totally see her sniffing something like a delicious pie with this pose and expression. And now I can't un-see it. That's what it is isn't it! ADMIT IT!

Now things I feel you could improvise:

SB's front leg that is down joins to her body at a very high point, I like that her shoulder is raised it really adds to her smug expression and posture. Very prissy and adorable. Very contrapposto if you know that word from your art school. However it also makes her front leg look extremely long.

Then I can't tell if you were giving her hooves or making her raised legs longer, if you were just lengthening them, just remember to erase those lines and ignore this comment lol. If you were giving her hooves, give it to all her limbs.

Now show accurate fillies (For your more original style you can ignore this, I'm just mentioning a point) their legs are very short and their heads are huge. So for this style you have here with the long legs and neck it makes her look a bit older, almost grown up / teen. So that's just something to be aware of, where if you want to make something look younger, you give it smaller legs, body, and a big ol' head and eyes. Bam, filly.

So the big thing is just be careful with legs and you're golden.

Anatomy looks good! My only critique would be the ear seams a bit small, pony ears are pretty big just check out any screenshot and you can sorta gauge it from that.

Your lines are a bit messy, now this is a two part critique. Because your lines should be super messy, but that's the lines for your undersketch. Or the first drawing of your pony/anything. These look like finalized lines, and the point of those it to be a bit more careful with them. So what I would recommend to you, is drawing really lightly and messy for your first go over of the pony or anything you are drawing, then making finalized lines like these and being a bit more careful with how they look.
