Happy Caturday & released this week in 1978; The Cars
Flashback Fridays Released this week in 1981; The "Urgh! A Music War" soundtrack double album. This comp nicely sums up early 1980's underground ranging from Punk (Dead Kennedys, Chelsea, 999, Spizz 80, Joan Jett), Post Punk (Gang Of Four, Magazine, Echo & Bunnymen, Au Pairs), New Wave (XTC, Devo, Police, Wall Of Voodoo), Techno (Gary Numan, OMD), Power Pop (The Members, Go-Go's), Garage (The Cramps, Fleshtones, X, Alley Cats), Art Rock Weirdos (Pere Ubu, Oingo Boingo, Klaus Nomi, Toyah Wilcox, Skafish), Reggae/Ska (Steel Pulse, UB40), plus however you categorize Joolz Holland and John Otway. A glaring lack of Goth, Industrial, Hardcore, Rockabilly, Mods, New Romantics, Pub Rock and a few of these they did choose have been long forgotten and probably should have been passed over but otherwise it's an excellent primer of early 80's Campus Radio and zines.
RIP to 1960's Jamaican Ska horn player and bandleader Carlos Malcolm;

Blue Mondays Happy Birthdays to Pops Foster (1892), Pops Stoneman (1893), Frankie Trambaur (1901), Jimmy Blythe (1901), Fats Waller (1904), Benny Goodman (1909) & T-Bone Walker (1910);
Silent Sundays Happy 145th Birthday to Alla Namizova, the first female film auteur to treat film as High Art. Born in the Crimea and trained in ballet & theater her films, especially those with art designer Natacha Rambova were ambitious Art Nouveau projects based on the works of Beardsley, Oscar Wilde and Ibsen with absurdly lush costumes & sets and her exotic tragic Vamp persona. "Camille" (1921, with Valentino) was a success but the exotic "Salome" (1922) which she bankrolled herself, bankrupted her and along with her scandalous personal life after a few more flops she retired until she returned in some small roles in the 40's. She died in 1945 aged 66. Like Theda (who also played Camille & Salome) only three of her films are extant but at least they are her best in "Red Lantern", "Camille" and "Salome" and all are gorgeous.
