“He’s just been so hell bent on all this, it’s like he’s in another world. I just miss my brother.”    She studies him for a long moment after the question, utterly surprised at the implications.    She trusts her brother so implicitly it never occurs to her that someone else might not.    “He would never hurt me, if that’s what you mean.” She sounds very sure of herself in    this. “Besides, I may not look like much, but I can take care of myself.”
Thomas nodded once, holding his hands up momentarily in wordless apology for suggesting    her brother might cause her any harm. “I’m sure you can.” He’d certainly seen enough to    be past a childish notion that young women couldn’t help themselves. “No matter how it turns    out, I hope you let your intention to stop it matter more than what actions your brother ends up    taking.” He should’ve prefaced that advice with in case of the worst, but perhaps he wanted to    mask any pessimism he had.
“If you want my help, you need to ask a direct question.”     He sounded gruffer than usual. Which was probably a sign of     tiredness more so than a reflection of intention to help or not.
After all this time, Thomas was still scared of death. Not his own, though. No.    He’d lived too long (and died too many ways) for that. It was watching others    die that made him tremble, that had him waking up frightened in the night, that    had him there now, with blood on his hands, trying desperately to find a way to    keep the younger one alive. He hadn’t seen what happened, and he didn’t have    time to imagine how someone would end up alone and hurt like this. Please    and come on are the only words that left him as he made frantic work of trying     to stop the bleeding.                     “You’re still with me, right?”     It was practically a prayer. He wasn’t sure what he would do if his rushed,     patchwork attempts at healing (pressure, torn bits of cloth tied tight around     the worst injuries, vague plans to find some kind of disinfectant, pressure)     were all in vain. So he repeated that last word again, hoping. “Right?”
The first glow of dawn was creeping into the sky. When they’d settled for the night, she’d    said she would take first watch. She ended up staying up whole night.  By now the cut on    her side had stopped bleeding. It still hurt, but she would live. Well, I’ll live regardless.    Maybe it was true that the injury on anyone else would be fatal. Given the state of the world    now, she almost wished that it was an option. Cursed to survive, but she could at least keep    some company in the wreckage that society had become. That was what she’d told herself    the day before, at least, when she’d gotten injured getting a stranger out of trouble. Today she    supposed it would be up to the stranger whether or not they stuck around; whether or not they    decided it was worth having someone else around. For now, though, with just the quiet and the    colors of dawn, Isobel could nearly forget the circumstances they were in. She looked over to    the sleeping figure, watching for the rise and fall of breathing. Somehow they had gone hand-in-    hand: remembering the beauty of nature and worrying if the other was even still alive.   Â

   “ ---- You shouldn’t be here.”
“I think so. Eventually. Time heals all wounds and all those other cliches I have to tell myself, right?” Still, she managed to muster up a small smile for him and that, in itself, was progress. “I think if my brother and I can come to an understanding about this, we can start to move on. Once I really get him back, I’ll be just fine. Or at least a lot less stressed.”
“Get him back?” he questioned, mind whirring momentarily through the different implications    such a simple sequence of words could have. But it wasn’t the most important thing, he    reminded himself, shaking his head. If she’d arrived at this choice with his help, Thom felt    compelled to care about its potential repercussions. “What happens to you if he doesn’t    come to an understanding?”
“I don’t really think there are any definitive answers when giving advice, but you     helped me accept some things I was wavering on. You can’t really ask for more     than that.“ She heaves a heavy sigh, but she can feel the tension bleeding out     of the set of her shoulders as she makes a firm decision on what she’s going     to do. A direction, at last. “I’m going to stop him. This isn’t what our parents     would have wanted for us, regardless of how they left us.”
He could sympathize with her, with the way sighed like there was a weight still unknown    to him behind everything she’d said so far. Thomas would have felt better if knew what it    was exactly that he’d helped her decide on. Stopping him, Thomas could only hope, didn’t    mean putting herself in danger. “Are you going to be okay?” Does anyone ever really know    the answer to that prior to anything of importance?Â

“You’re probably right. There’s certainly enough people we hold responsible to keep     it going.” She was probably oversharing at this point. Her brother would already be     furious at her for airing their dirty laundry if he knew. Family business should stay     in the family. “I’m sorry for unloading all this on you. I guess it was just weighing     heavier on my mind than I knew. You’ve been very nice putting up with it.”
He wasn’t sure if that was reassuring or not. At least she seemed to see reason in    what he’d said. After her apology he nodded once, trying to give the girl a reassuring    smile. “It’s okay. I’ve heard worse. I’m sorry not to have any definitive answers for    you.” Thomas thought of leaving it at that, but curiosity got the better of him, nudging    him to ask, “Are you any closer to knowing what you’ll do?”
“If you expect me to trust you, you’re going to need to do     a hell of a lot better than just saying you’re trustworthy.”
eternally wanted plot starting point: Thom and/or Bel meeting anyone who is a reincarnation of someone from their past. further plot details would depend on who it exactly it was an so on.
“I don’t know. I guess not. Then again, I never thought he’d put me in a position like     this either so I guess you never really know. Honestly, I’m not sure I shouldn’t want     the exact same thing as him. Revenge for our parents’ deaths is within our reach     and I’m trying to stop it. Maybe I’m the one there’s something wrong with. Would you     take it? If you had the chance?”
“If you start chasing revenge, you might not ever stop running.” He felt it was a    warning he’d heard once before, though he couldn’t name when or where. Suddenly    it had sprung to mind, and it felt apt enough. “I’ve never known it to end well, is what    I mean.”
“To tame or to destroy?” “To destroy.”

“I guess maybe I’m scared he’ll turn his back on me if I do. That’s pretty selfish, huh?”
“No, it -- it sounds natural to me. But if he’s done as much as you say he has for     you, do you really think this would be the one thing he couldn’t forgive?”
